“A crying shame”
Reviewed 19 June 2013

I've been going to the Far Western for literally decades. When the kids took over, they made some changes to the menu, but for the most part, the food was still good and the place had personality. I visited the new restaurant for the first time this past weekend, and I was so disappointed. The food is now 'OK'... there are better steakhouses in the area, and far better value to be had. The new space was a huge, empty, characterless room. While it can accommodate more customers, it gets noisy fast, service is slow and a little testy, and I didn't see any of the familiar friendly faces from the old restaurant in Guadeloupe. A smart person would move into that quirky, friendly old space, and open a good, basic, Santa Maria-style barbeque steak house. Old regulars like me would flock to it in droves. Sorry, Far Western, I understand progress, but I'll be going to that other place from now on.

“Great Food . . . But, Oh, That Service!”
Reviewed 16 June 2013

The FW has moved and the food is as good as ever. However, the service needs work. For some unknown reason, we had four waitpersons, including a female bartender whose street clothes inc. a long-sleeved heavy sweater which did not seem remotely sanitary. The senior citizen female waitperson was not attentive and, frankly, she smelled of Oil of Old Lady because of strong perfume and a need for better hygiene.

The rack of lamb was outstanding. It was presented with delicious garlic mashed potatoes, lovely vegetables, and a separate plate of sauteed mushrooms on the side.

The salad which is included in some meals was also an A and was nicely presented on a large plate. The gorgonzola bread bowl, designer bread sticks, and parmesan crisps were an A.

But, hey, even cowboys deserve good service.

“Western Theme Great Tradition”
Reviewed 23 May 2013

Chef Rick joined Far Western about three years ago and I believe he stayed with Far Western when they relocated to Orcutt last year. My friends say the new location is worth the visit.

“Delicious food!”
Reviewed 20 May 2013 via mobile

This is a very nice restaurant. The staff were very attentive and the courses came quickly. I had the filet mignon and it was wonderful; very tender, and with a unique and delicious flavor. Probably one of the best steaks I've ever had. They also had a minnestrone soup with ravioli that was tasty.

Several reviewers are clearly nostalgic for the old location. If you're like me and had never been there, and take the new place as it is, you'll probably really like it. I will definitely come back if I get the chance.

“A Central Californian Coast Icon is gone”
Reviewed 9 December 2012

I visited the new Far Western Tavern in Orcutt CA and as the old saying goes " you can't go home anymore" It was nicely appointed, with some of it's old charm, but it in no way was anything like the Far Western of of Guadalupe. The bar is very small and it is used as a dinning room, so it was very difficult to just get a drink. The limited bar space was 50% diners the night I was there. Chef Rich has changed the presentation to reflect a modern upscale approach. No longer are there a basket of crackers and the the carrots, celery plate is also gone, replace by bowl of bread sticks and rolls. The traditional bowl of Santa Maria beans has been replaced with individual 3 ounce servings, very meager faire. The same treatment also for the salsa. Gone is the feel a western BBQ. The food was good, but the whole experience was disappointing; it's not the same Far Western.
