There is no place like St. Orres. It is quintessential North Coast, from the setting on a hillside covered with redwoods to the building-beams rescued from a local trestle bridge. The cabins have been beautifully renovated, and breakfast is brought to your door in a lovingly crafted wooden box.

Room Tip: We LOVED Black Chanterelle, with its own sauna.

This is truly majestic, one-of-a-kind place on the Northern California Coast near Gualala! We made this hotel and restaurant a culmination point of a special trip with my father for his 70th and were not disappointed for a moment. Spectacular nature and terrific touch of owner/chef Rosemary and her staff made it truly unique and unforgettable experience. The attention to detail and quality is palpable in everything… well-appointed historic cottages with stacks of cured fire-wood with a backdrop of the majestic redwoods, exquisite main dining room, carefully crafted and perfected menu is imaginative and in the best Italian tradition stays true to the best ingredients and best preparations with addition of only freshest local favorites (like sweet local oyster or rare black California Chanterelle), or even still-warm and simply perfectly made quiche Lorraine in the famous breakfast box delivered to your door on the crisp morning around 8am… Ohh, just perfect! This is the place to stay, to get away from noise, to reflect, to indulge and to create special memories. I cannot wait to go back and will be planning another trip ASAP!

We celebrated our 36 wedding anniversary at the Osprey house. It had the most incredible views of the ocean from the deck. Many birds came and visited us. We had deer that slept overnight in the front and side of the house. The house was spotless. The bed was extremely comfortable with cozy sheets. The hot tub a delight and the stars were breathtaking. We had a great time. The issues were slight, however annoying -- The breakfast basket was not good, we ate out. For the money per night, the food needs reworking. The furniture needs some repair. I almost collapsed in the outside chair on the deck, it was so rickety. The living room chair covering is really worn and needs replacement. The Kitchen was not well equipped so if you're going to cook, bring everything with you.

We've stayed at St. Orres several times over the last 20 years. We like to stay in Sea Pines, an old original fisherman's cabin. Cozy, not fussy and affordable...allowing us to splurge by going to the restaurant for dinner. The cabin has a nice fireplace with stacks of firewood, view of the ocean, breakfast delivered to the room and access to the hot tub under a wooden gazebo in the style of the hotel. There's not much around, so this is the place to go to truly unwind and rejuvenate. No wireless in the cabin, no t.v., no phone. Perfect for a romantic weekend, especially if you love a good fire in the fireplace. I'll bring a reading light next time, as this is a great place to read a book, but the lighting isn't the best.

We just returned from spending one night at St. Orres. Our accommodation was Osprey Cove Cottage. Very comfortable. King size bed that was "goldy-locks" not too firm and not too soft, nice quality linens, a nicely equipped kitchen, wood stove with plenty of firewood, nicely furnished, with interesting art pieces. The cottage also had convenient parking and a really great deck and private hot tub overlooking the pacific. Continental picnic breakfast is delivered to you your door. I don't give it 5 stars because the breakfast was a little too much on the sweet side for my taste, rice pudding in place of eggs, very sticky sweet granola , pumpkin spice bread and fruit that was a little too un-ripe. But other than that I wouldn't hesitate to return and to recommend it to friends. I'll just make sure to bring something I'd rather eat for breakfast.

This amazing Russian style wooden hotel has wonderful charm. You can stay in this wooden building or one of the 4 wooden chalets in the woods. We stayed in one of these chalets in the woods called " Wildflower" . Cosy, with a wood burning stove, outdoor shower, character style kitchen. We slept under the stars; a little wooden ladder leads up a mezzanine with a window in the roof. You can lie in the double bed watching the stars! The beautiful designed restaurant in the main hotel has a wonderful, inspiring a tasty menu. The owners and staff are incredibly friendly and helpful. In the morning your breakfast is delivered to your door in a basket; orange juice, muesli, milk and a plate of warm delicious home baked frittata and cakes. We thoroughly enjoyed our 3 nought stay there.

The Russian turrets and dacha-themed cottages (Russian summer homes) feel out of place and fussy on this beautiful coastline. The Treetop Cottage which was comfortable and had a nice patio with a view of the ocean. The bed was comfortable. There is a small kitchen with very dated utensils, etc. The bathroom is in serious need of a renovation. The unusually configured sunken tub, think eggshell, had two levels that you had to step very far down into. There was a handrail on the side however, you need to be sober and very alert to use it. The water didn't drain and the portable shower head didn't work so that you had to squat under the spigot to bathe. We did mention it when we checked out -- hard to believe that a housekeeper didn't tell the owners there was a problem. There is a small bar overseen by Lupe who is one of the best bartenders I have encountered. A father and son duo played jazz electronica that was atonal and I couldn't help but wonder what the owner Rosemary was thinking when she brought them in to play during a cocktail hour on a busy weekend. We had some bar food which was fine. Walking around the property, some of the less expensive cottages looked run down.

Room Tip: Ask about the showers, tubs, etc.
