“Like being transported back in time.”
Reviewed 26 September 2013

I stayed here in September 2012 and the owner Phil was one of the most friendly and gracious bed and breakfast hosts I've ever met. Let me first explain the title of my review because staying at this BnB reminded me of being transported back in time to a really nice place in the 90s decor wise. It made me nostalgic and I actually enjoyed that aspect because everything worked and was clean. It's not like there was old dirty stuff or anything. Anyways, this BnB is so relaxing. We had originally booked the Aquitaine room that has a mini kitchen in it, but Phil offered us a complimentary upgrade to the Southwind room if we didn't mind not having a kitchen. The perks of the Southwind room are that you have a KING sized bed and a big window with a view of the ocean peaking through the trees. The Southwind also has a huge jacuzzi bath which I didn't use, but my fiance enjoyed relaxing in it after a long drive up the pacific coast highway. You can walk across the street to the Whale Watch Inn and take the "guests only" stairs to the beach. We enjoyed our night sipping wine, listening to music, sitting by the fireplace, and playing board games! What a relaxing night. Breakfast was a ginormous spread of food the next day. Phil gave us great recommendations for our drive back to San Francisco. We stopped by Korbel Winery and then took a walk through Anderson Woods. Our original goal was to go to Muir Woods, but Anderson Woods fit better into our driving route and schedule. My only complaint is I wish we stayed two nights instead of one. ;) Thanks Phil for an awesome stay!

NOTE: there is no cell phone service on this part of the coast, so do not rely on navigation apps to get you to the front door of this country inn. If you are traveling northbound on Hwy 1, it is north of Gualala and Anchor Bay. After you pass the Anchor Bay campground, the inn is just around the bend on the right at Fish Rock Road.
We took advantage of a mid-summer, mid-week room discount offered on the inn’s website for a short 2-night getaway. I was a little worried an inn on the highway may be noisy, but my husband and I really enjoyed our stay in the Southwind Room. The property slopes uphill, and our guestroom was at the top of the property. The king brass bed was very comfortable and the large picture windows looked across the roof tops of the other buildings to the trees across the road. Accessibility was not difficult as we could drive up the side road and park in a separate driveway next to the building. We only had to climb one flight of switchback stairs to our room. Recommendation: if you like to sleep in late, bring a pair of blackout eye shades. The windows face southeast and the sun comes right in the room upon rising.
Phil & Pia, the innkeepers, made us feel at home. Breakfasts were fresh and tasty. Phil gave us great tips for accessing the Anchor Bay beach and where to hike, dine, etc.
Take time to wander the naturally landscaped grounds. There are benches for meditation and two impressive whales carved out of tree trunks by an artist who stayed at the inn. At the top of the property is a quiet grassy knoll and gazebo. We enjoyed sitting in the Adirondack chairs sipping wine and watching the varied bird life before heading into town for dinner. Fortune smiled upon us as the weather was beautifully warm and clear (somewhat unusual for the coast in summer). We sat outside the gazebo one night after dinner and watched shooting stars pass overhead. The sound of sea lions barking in the distance was oddly comforting, reminding us we were on the ocean.
Should we head back to “Mendonoma” again, we will not hesitate to book a room at NC Country Inn. Thanks Phil & Pia!

After a ring on the big ship bell, we were warmly greeted by the proprietors Phil and Pia. Walking the grounds treasures greet the eye. Take your time in the gazebo or shaded bench and discover giant carved whales, petite bird houses and fountains. Retreat to your room and enjoy the scenic views and the warmth from a fireplace as you read or plan your day. Breakfast with other guests is a great start to the day. The freshly prepared food had lots variety and very was tasty.

Room Tip: Room 5 - the Southwind has treetop and partial ocean view. Big full sized windows let in the look &a...

For a quiet retreat to the Northern California Coast, the North Coast Country Inn should be on your short list. I think there are 6 rooms and we stayed in the Gallery room for a couple of nights. The room was in a separate building on the sloping site and was very quiet. The access is all by stairs so if that is an issue you should try elsewhere. Access was the only drawback. The grounds are lush with exotic plants, The proprietor, Phil, and his two dogs, are friendly and will interact or leave you in peace. Phil does a good job with the breakfast and we always had some kind of eggs, fruit and mellon, yogurt, muffins, etc. A great start for our day on the coast. Gualala is a small town but this section of coast has many such small places and that is why we come. I would stay here another time!!

Room Tip: The topmost room has a separate parking space. The lower rooms are connected together. I liked the...

The North coast country inn bed and breakfast is a absolute gem! My husband and I just spent 2 nights there . We had a truly wonderful time. The rooms are comfortable , clean and the decor is romanic and inviting. Each room has its own private outside sitting area . Phil ( the owner ) is funny ,kind ,and makes you feel welcome . He also makes a wonderful breakfast for his guests every morning. We will stay there again and bring friends with us to share the experience . Phyllis

North Coast Country Inn is an excellent B&B, about 4 miles north of Gualala. The rooms are spacious and nicely furnished, the area is quiet and pleasant. This is a nice alternative to staying at Sea Ranch, offering the best lodging in the Gualala area. About 1 mile south there are two good restaurants serving Mexican and Thai dishes, also among the best in this area.
