“Can't wait to go back to boon!”
Reviewed 13 January 2009

It's been six months since we spent a long weekend at boon. Since then we've stayed in 11 different hotels in various places around the continent and as we were planning where to go in 2009, boon hotel+spa made the short list. It was one of only two places we've placed a priority on returning to this year.

All of the great reviews are accurate and we agree so I won't repeat what's been written many times before. I will reiterate though, what great hosts the owners are to all guests. They make some great cocktails, perfect coffee, and are very generous with their knowledge of the area. They even helped us get reservations in a solidly booked SFO restaurant that we had tried to secure for weeks. We wanted a low-key relaxing weekend and from the minute we walked through the arbor, our desire came true. The only thing we would change is to have had a shower big enough for two in our room, but the fireplace made up for it.

We were there during the Russian River Blues Festival which takes place on the river bank. We highly recommend the Fest, and highly recommend boon hotel+spa.

We took two rooms at Boon in October. They were reasonably priced; that's why we chose Guerneville, not Healdsburg. The Spa at boon is a room where they give massages.
The rooms are minimalist. A rug on the floor by the bed would have nice as would a hook for the bathrobes they provided. Our room had a view of outbuildings and empty yards of neighboring properties, from our deck, which was nice. There was a little bar sink, a fridge and a fireplace. Shower in the tiny bathroom, no tub. Our sons room had a futon in the living area and a queen bed in an alcove. Lots of Ikea style decor, very clean, The activity around the pool at happy hour is a real draw. Lots of guests brought their wine out and the owners come by everybody's table and chat with you. The place is called Boon as that is the name of their dog. It seems like guest pets were welcome too. Gurneville is in the sticks; the town has a great thrift/antique shop and some funky restaurants and a grocery store. Lots of aging hippies and gays. In fact, I think Boon is billed as a gay resort. The whole community has a very laid back, low key vibe. Completely different from Healdsburg.

My biggest complaint was that I left my watch (a Rolex) behind and when I was 40 miles down the road, heading for the airport, I called and left a message asking them to keep it for me. I later called back and was told the watch had not been found.

  • Liked — Lots of space, nice pool area
  • Disliked — spotty phone and TV/internet service, no rugs on floor

My boyfriend and I wanted to get away from the city and we were so impressed with our stay at Boon. The room are impeccably clean and such attention to detail! Plush comfortable bed with quality linens, bathrobes, complimentary french press coffee and the most attentive hosts. Krista and Jill were so accomodating. The grounds are beautifully maintained. Highly recommended!

Boon Hotel + Spa is a family resort for the relaxed, open-minded traveler: owner Krista went out of her way to offer personalized service to us. The property is surrounded by beautiful redwood trees and the Armstrong Redwoods State Park is very close by. Bicycles can be rented and there is also a spa at the property. Breakfast is delivered to your room at the time of your choosing, from 8am to 10am. We stayed in a queen room (8 – a room located at the end of the property). We could not have been more pleased. Krista went out of her way to give us good advice for vineyards, restaurants and other things to do in the area.

This is a green hotel at its finest. The hotel uses solar energy to power its outdoor lighting and pool and uses organic bath products, cleaning products and linens. The property is a minimalist, modern retreat. This hotel is highly recommended, as the photos posted do no justice to the warmth of the property and the relaxing, peaceful demeanor of Boon. This is a pet friendly hotel named after the owners’ friendly dog. If you’re as lucky as we were, Boon himself will bring his bright orange Frisbee to your feet.

  • Liked — Very friendly family atmosphere, beautiful landscape; excellent value for money

An oasis set in the middle of small Guerneville, California, Boon Hotel + Spa is a quaint, boutique resort for the relaxed, open-minded traveler. You will not find room service, valet parking or a tall skyscraper with overpriced rooms and an underappreciated staff. Instead, owners Jill and Krista (along with Krista’s mother) go out of their way to offer personalized service to all of the hotels’ guests.

Boon is located on Armstrong Woods Road, one mile from two thousand year old redwood trees in the heart of the Russian River Valley. The river itself is half a mile from the hotel, within a nice walk’s distance from downtown Guerneville with shops, restaurants, book stores, coffee shops and bars. You are conveniently located within thirty minutes in most directions of small, cult-like vineyards and massive producers alike. Korbel sits a few minutes drive down River Road. Moshin vineyards, founded by mathematician Rick Moshin, is ten minutes by car. The hotel sells bottles of Moshin at the front desk if you are looking for a bottle of wine to relax by the solar heated swimming pool, hot tub, and funky, trendy poolside seating area. The pool remains open until 10pm, the hot tub until midnight. For the cold California nights, the hotel goes out of their way to light candles and start a fire next to the hot tub. You are encouraged to travel from your contemporary cabin-like room to the hottub in provided, organic-cotton bathrobes. Orange towels dot the all-white landscape of the pool. Palm trees, hydrangeas and bamboo complement the redwood trees surrounding the property.

This is a pet friendly hotel named after the owners’ mixed-breed friendly dog. If you’re lucky, Boon himself will bring his bright orange Frisbee to your feet. There are bicycles that can be rented by the half or full day, and a spa at the property. The treatment room is located in the reception.

Breakfast is delivered to your room at the time of your choosing, from 8am to 10am. The hotel strives to serve a different breakfast to a guest each morning of their stay. We were fed organic muffins, bagels, croissants (freshly-baked and out of the oven), yoghurt, orange juice and French pressed coffee over two days. There is a bottomless jug of water available at all times by the pool, and soft drinks, beer and bottles of Pelligreno are available for purchase on an honor system at the pool bar. Although the website and room literature informs daily room service is not available, we were surprised to see our room cleaned during our visit.

We stayed in the king suite, room seven, a hip room located at the end of the property adjacent to the future yoga building (to be built this winter, per the owners). We could not have been more pleased. We took advantage of all this boutique hotel had to offer, including getting to know the owners. Jill and Krista went out of their way to give us pointers for vineyards, restaurants, and other things to do on our few day excursion into the Russian River Valley.

This is a green hotel at its finest. The hotel applies solar energy to its outdoor lighting and pool and uses organic bath products, cleaning products and linens. The property is a minimalist, modern retreat. Groups can book the entire hotel (there are only 14 rooms), and Jill and Krista will do whever they can to make your visit a special and memorable one. This hotel is highly recommended, as the photos posted do no justice to the warmth of the property and the relaxing, peaceful demeanor of Boon.

Great location near the redwoods, Russian River wineries and the coast. The accommodations were spare but perfect, right down to the snuggly bed linens, robes and the organic coffee, orange juice, croissant and bagles with fresh fruit breakfast delivered to our room every day.

Also, there's nothing like grabbing a bottle of pino at some local winery (Lynmar) and sipping it in the saline hot tub by the fire on a cool, breezy evening. Enchanting!

You can't beat the attention to detail from Sue, either. This place promises to be a hit for any of you looking for a laid back but elegant experience.

Ask to meet Paris (the other half of the permanent pets at Boon). She'll sit in the sun with you in a heartbeat.
