“I think I'm in love”
Reviewed 19 February 2014

I'm in love with the Applewood Inn! My husband and I spent 2 nights in Room 19--Michaelangelo-- and we couldn't have been happier. Our weekend came courtesy of a Travelzoo voucher that paid for itself three-fold! We were given an excellent rundown on the site and surrounding environs upon check-in, then --be still my heart-- we were handed two glasses of sparkling wine. (sigh)
The room had a lovely balcony with a gas firepit, though we chose to enjoy our drinks by the fireplace in the room. The jacuzzi tub was large enough for two for those inclined to share a tub, and the king-sized bed was sooooooooooo comfortable!
We enjoyed the chef's tasting menu and wine pairings at Applewood's restaurant, which was on par with the food we've enjoyed in Europe. Tasting menus are generally pretty small, but we were absolutely stuffed by the time the dessert course was delivered! The accompanying wines were also fabulous, though they were a bit too heavy on the 'whites' side for our tastes. Thank Heavens we were literally staying 20 steps from the restaurant!
Both mornings, upon awakening, we enjoyed two-course breakfasts and bottomless mimosas. Really, you had me at 'bottomless mimosas.'
On top of EVERYTHING ELSE that made Applewood a lovely place to visit, they gave us a pass for free wine tasting in the area. How cool was that?! We'll definitely return to the Applewood Inn!

We stayed here on a Groupon special, so we can't complain too much about the cost. Our room was in the main house and was nice, though it backed up to the main road. The bed was a bit soft for me, but they had down pillows, which is a must for us. The place is a bit run down, so I would not pay the rack rate. The town of Guerneville is charming. The restaurant's food was excellent, both dinner and breakfast.

Room Tip: Don't accept a room that backs up to the main road.

Loved our "Beautiful Room" in the main house, which was cozy and "Beautiful" once we got inside it.

We found nothing cozy or welcoming about the main reception or sitting areas of the Inn, especially being there on a cold, rainy day, mid-week. There was no fire in the fireplace; no welcoming reception; no welcoming beverages as others describe.

In fact, not even the warmth of hospitality as we were left to wait 45 mins until our room, (already half finished when we arrived), was made available to us. Meanwhile, the two mature women behind the reception desk remained focused on answering phones,( walking by us to another office or storage area, on the opposite side of the living area where we sat ) to restock office supplies, and count "noisy and cluttering" coins(?). All as if we did not exist. Totally unlike any experience I've ever had in my travels, locally and internationally, or like I just read, others experienced on their weekend stay --where the fireplaces were actually in use, and guests made to feel welcome.

At least we had a "Beautiful Room" to retreat to, and which would, under different circumstances, bring us back in Spring and Fall,--especially since we fell in love with the
Restaurant, and loved the wonderful breakfast included with our stay. AND the superb
food and service by Nate and his great service assistant for dinner -- all enjoyed
in a cozy, romantic environment -- where we experienced the quality of service, warmth and hospitality that we had looked forward to on this "local overnight escape" and wish had
extended to the Inn lodging as well.

Room Tip: A "Beautiful Room" in the Inn itself, though ground floor location is not very private

Room was dark and in need of upgrade; only one person to take care of breakfast; clearly couldn't handle all people properly; served NOT fresh juices and no one coming around to refresh coffees! Not what one expects from a quality inn. Would not recommend it.

My friend had booked a package deal through a site for our group of 3 couples for a early Valentine's Day celebration. The package was for one night's accommodations including a Prix Fixe dinner, breakfast and a spa credit. I didn't have time to look at the website and went along for the one day stay with low expectations. Hadn't been to that part of Sonoma county for wine tasting in over 20 years so was a bit surprised how far it was from the more heavily visited part of the valley.

The facility was much bigger than I had expected as there were 19 rooms in 2 buildings, with a full size restaurant, a small spa facility and a pool/spa. The place had the feeling of a small resort but the design and compact layout in a nice setting gave it a very cozy and comfortable feeling. Unfortunately it was pouring rain the day we arrived, throughout the night and into the next day when we departed. Although this deluge prevented us from exploring the facility in greater detail, it
was evident that the Inn was built with high quality materials throughout both the exterior and interiors of buildings. We all had different rooms and they all were cozy, very clean and well decorated. Ours had a fireplace and a Roman tub with a Jacuzzi and a handheld shower head. Rather would have had a full shower but taking a relaxing bath was quite nice. The bed was of the high quality foam type and actually very comfortable. The room was quiet at night but there was quite a bit of transient noise from outside the room in the morning especially from other guests going to and fro and also engaging in mobile phone calls trying to get a stronger signal.

The spa treatments were of high quality. The room itself was small but well designed with nice interior accouterments. The masseuses were excellent as all in our party felt that they did an exceptional job. Prices were a bit on the high side but still worth the cost.

Now for the dining. We had heard that the Applewood restaurant was very highly regarded but hadn't checked out recent reviews. As part of the package, we had a set Prix Fixe menu for dinner that was disappointing from starters through the main course. One of the starters was a plate of fresh oysters with anchovies as a dressing. The group found that the anchovies overwhelmed the flavor of oysters which were of very high quality. The rack of lamb was only one piece and although we are all not big eaters, we were mostly hungry by the end of our five course meal. It was quite a letdown. The dessert was the best course of the evening. The wine list was not extensive but had a strong selection of great local wines with reasonable pricing. The wait staff was very friendly and cannot fault them as they gave their best effort but for the prices one is to pay to dine there for dinner, their level of experience is bit light. I was having to fill our own wine glasses throughout the evening but perhaps our waiter did not want to intrude as he felt we had it "under" control.

Breakfast on the other hand was excellent. Food quality was high along with a good amount of choices. The "Bountiful" breakfast was exactly that! Service was excellent although food took a bit long to come out in some instances but all in all, very enjoyable and satisfying.

Rated our experience here as very good. Thought for a short bit about rating our stay as average due to our dinner experience but with all other factors stated above, stayed with my original rating. The staff are all very friendly and helpful and that also was a very important factor in tipping it over to the final rating. In today's competitive restaurant environment, it's become more difficult to stand out and deliver that fine dining experience that will earn high marks. Hopefully they will find their way back to earn that excellent rating that is easily within in their reach with everything else that the Applewood Inn has to offer.

Room Tip: If you are not a true bathtub faithful, be sure to get a room with a full shower.

60 minutes by car from The City (San Francisco), in a gentlly sloped Redwood Valley where the Russian River meanders, is the Applewood Inn. An old mansion lovingly converted to a Mediterranean styled B&B. Our room was a sunflower yellow: cozy and quaint, but with great (free) WiFi; flat screen TV; and, an incredibly comfortable memory foam bed. Redwoods immediately outside our windows, with a patio, spa and pool beyond. Reception is in the Great Room, filled with interesting art, furniture, sitting areas and two roaring fires, perfect for our rainy winter night stay. Complimentary wine or champagne on arrival. The Restaurant was excellent: every bit as good as Healdsburg's now closed Michelin-starred Cyrus, but with friendlier staff and more a more welcoming casual atmosphere. We thoroughly enjoyed dinner; loved the warm coziness of the room while it rained during the night; and , woke up to yet another scrumptious meal, breakfast. Champagne and mimosas, with made to order specials: the eggs were so fresh - from The Inn's own chickens. We had not a single complaint about our stay - it was perfect. Go if you have the chance. (Explore the great little town of Guerneville too ).

We loved everything about this place! A beautiful property that served a wonderful breakfast. The staff was courteous and professional. Dinner at the restaurant was excellent. Our first night we had chef's tasting menu with wine pairing. We loved it so much we went back our second night and ordered from the menu. We were equally pleased. We can't wait to go back!
