Whether I go for a week, a long weekend or a regular weekend, whether its Winter or Summer, I have a great time at the Highlands. The owners, Ken and Lynette, are there to make sure I have a great time, every time. Help with wine tours, elegant dining or someplace fun and funky - canoeing, horseback riding, spectacular auto-tours through the surrounding country. The pool area is laid back and clothing optional along with the separate hot tub area. I have been here many, many times on my own and there are always other guests to meet and make new friends - go to dinner or just hang. The people are cool. It's not a bar scene but that doesn't mean you won't find new friends hanging on the porches of their cabins having a cocktail before going to dinner

The rooms range from frugal and clean to very nice with a private two person soaking tubs in front of the fireplace in your cabin. I've stayed in almost all of them and have no complaints about any. They serve a Continental breakfast every day but with homemade muffins on the weekends - its held in the lounge and a another great place to meet people if you want.

The main thing about the Highlands is that you can have what you want. There are bars, restaurants and nightlife within a short walk but you can come home to peace and quiet at the end of the evening.

I say go, enjoy, meet and greet or just hang by the pool or in the hot tub and stare at the redwoods.

Lynette is the perfect host, providing useful information and insights on arrival and on hand to advise throughout your stay; she makes you feel very welcome. The King-size cabin we stayed in was beautiful and tastefully decorated. The resort cabins are surrounded by lovely gardens and nestle among the trees. The breakfast provided was granola, yogurt, coffee, orange juice and fruit, as advertised on the website and was very much welcome after the full-on American diner breakfasts we'd been indulging in while touring Nevada and California en route to the Highlands! The resort is a couple of minutes walk away from the delightful town of Guerneville where there are plenty of places to eat and drink and an excellent supermarket if you fancy catering for yourself. If you get chance, be sure to call in to the pizza restaurant opposite the start of Armstrong Woods Road - the pizza's were excellent and words cannot do the people running the place justice - go visit and enjoy.

These inn-keepers have developed a lovely resort with cabins. Everything is comfortable, well-tended and relaxing. If you are a gay visitor to Russian River, I can't think of a better location and value. This is NOT a super fancy or trendy resort like some that cater to the gay community. It is the opposite: a sweet home with pool surrounded by quaint cabins. I have been coming here nearly 20 years and am thrilled with each visit.

When we booked this hotel, it was primarily based on location. My husband and his brother had a triathalon down the street. The hotel was in the perfect location for what we needed, and was also not too far from several wineries. The people at the front desk were very friendly, and the grounds were very beautiful. There are a few reasons why I am not giving them 4 stars. The first is the room itself. While it was quaint, given that it was a cabin, the bathrooms had peeling walls and mold. If you are looking for a "cute" cabin with no frills, and do not care about things like peeling walls and mold, its perfect otherwise. Be aware, the continental breakfast is typically granola, yogurt and fruit, as well as coffee and tea. One of the highlights of the area was a restaurant on main street called "Main Street Station." We ate there all 4 nights for the great lasagna and the wonderful live music nightly. One more thing to be aware of about this hotel, we knew it was a gay resort (which was great, we didn't mind at all) however we were unaware the pool and spa areas were clothing optional. Again, I personally did not mind, but if you were not expecting it, it might be an uncomfortable surprise.

Thanks for taking the time to review Highlands Resort. After doing a little checking, it appears you rented both bedrooms in our "Shared Cabin". You're right, that bathroom does require guests to use the ceiling ventilation fan and heat lamp in order to dry it out between showers so that we don't have problems with mold and dampness. We try to take care of it on an annual basis, but sometimes... well, it needs more attention. [It got it's annual face lift in October 2009!] We do appreciate you bringing it to our attention.

Although our old website let folks know we are a gay resort that's "straight-friendly", exactly what our breakfast includes and prominent information about the "clothing-optional' areas; we launched a new website in June 2009. We hope the new format is easier to read and that it answers more questions for our potential guests. It's definitely got more information about the resort and our location.

My partner and I have stayed here 3 times now, twice in one of the nice nonsmoking cabins with a gas fireplace, and once in the 2br unit attached to the office. The hosts are amazing, we come out from Massachusetts specifically to go wine tasting, and they gave us great tips and advice on where to start exploring the Russian River appelation. The jacuzzi is secluded but not seedy, it's a great way to meet and talk to other guests. The kitchenettes are clean and always tidied up as part of the room service daily. I really hope we get to go back to the Highlands again soon and I'd recommend it for couples, GLBT or S! (straight) :)

My partner and I have stayed here for long weekends 2 or 3 times each year over the past decade. (After stays at 4 other good Guerneville locations, this became our favorite.) We have enjoyed cabins with wood burning stoves; gas fireplaces, and kitchens (where we've prepared 3 of our Thanksgiving dinners.) Our favorite time to visit is winter, when fog & rain are more likely to enhance the nostalgic atmosphere. The quaint, vintage cabins offer a quiet, intimate home-away-from-home where we can relax and cocoon. They remind both of us of childhood getaways with our families. A great place to see and hear one another, rather than a TV or stereo, snuggle up in front of the fire and sleep as though yours is the only cabin out there under the fresh and fragrant redwoods. Circumstance have prevented our getting back there for more than a year now, but we are at last planning our next visit. We miss the place like a dear old friend.

After finding this retreat online, and checking it out on TripAdvisor, we booked it directly by phone. It exceeded our expectations. It was quiet, rustic, comfortable, and welcoming. Our hosts, Lynette and Ken, could not have been more gracious or helpful. Not fancy, not luxurious, not pretentious, but not rundown or shabby. We were there for 5 days, and I hope we can return next year. Whether gay or straight, you can expect a great getaway (no phone or tv in room, no noisy neighbors).
