“A very nice Surprise!”
Reviewed 27 August 2014

My husband and I were returning home to WA last April when we came upon Guerneville and Fern Grove Cottages accidentally. It was late in the evening, we were very tired and the owner had one cottage left. The 2 bedroom cottage with kitchen was delightful! Seeing the beautiful grounds the next morning was such a treat. Flowers and beautiful plants were everywhere and everything was immaculate. This cottage had a cowboy theme with items reminiscent of our childhood! The included breakfast in the morning was offered in the elegant and charming dining room of the home. Delicious homemade treats hot from the oven and fresh fruit. We definitely recommend Fern Grove Cottages. It would be a wonderful place for a family reunion!

Wow! What a sweet review! Thank you so much for your kind words and positive review. We greatly appreciate it. We very much enjoyed meeting you, and hope you come back again one day. We sure do love flowers here, and our gardener, Mario, works his magic every year and creates our beautiful gardens. We are glad you enjoyed them. This property has been a perfect spot for family reunion groups on several occasions, with the BBQ and picnic garden, the heated pool, and variety of individual cottages. Thanks for the great feedback. Hope to see you again soon!

It's a quint little spot with beautiful flowers planted here and there, and redwood trees in the background. If you're lucky, you might get one of the nicer cottages. But if you're not lucky, you may get stuck with a shabby, dusty & worn-down cottage, and totally hate your stay.

No matter which cottage you get, take note: there is no air conditioning. In mid-July when I stayed for several nites with my co-workers, it was intolerably hot in all of our separate cottages.

If the weather is moderate AND you get one of the nicer cottages, this can be a wonderful place to stay. Unfortunately I was assigned a cottage that was cute, but reeked of cigarettes, so I had to switch rooms. After a couple more tries with cottages that smell okay, but looked crappier, I caught a break and got a decent little one-room cottage.

My cottage was clean, had a small kitchenette with a mini-refrigerator, sink, microwave, coffee-maker, and even some pans and cooking utensils. The bed was comfortable. The bathroom was tiny, but clean. I definitely recommend the Mexican restaurant next door, but not the nearby beach - which is quite grungy.

Anyway, IF I had to stay in Guerneville again AND I could get one of the better cottages, I would stay here again.

Room Tip: I'm not sure if you can ask for photos of which cottage you get assigned ahead of time, but if y...

We stayed in a cabin with 2 bedrooms, each of which was big enough for the bed plus maybe 12 inches around it -- difficult to even walk the perimeter of the room, and no place for even a small bag. the kitchenette was equally simple, just enough plates and bowls, and not enough counter to do much of anything. the tiny freezer in the small fridge didn't actually freeze anything. All this would be fine at half the price, but not at $250/night. the place was clean (the ragged western motif was interesting...) and the people friendly, and breakfast was pretty decent. The pool was very nice and the gardens were well kept with plenty of seating in the shade. Guerneville itself is nothing to speak of, with few decent restaurants and a 'beach' that doubles as a parking lot. But the nearby park is one attraction, there are a couple of very nice small cafes and a used bookstore.

My wife and I are big fans of "Hotel Impossible" and are always dismayed at how often the rooms in the featured hotels are just plain dirty. And to tell the truth, uncleanliness is one of the main reasons my wife and I don't really travel much anymore. So it was a huge relief to find that our room here was absolutely spotless. And even though it was right on the highway, the room was exceptionally quiet. We especially enjoyed the fireplace on a chilly April night and the tasty breakfast the next morning. We will be back!

Room Tip: We loved Room #19

Pros: great location, beautiful grounds, small kitchettes in rooms, dog friendly and ample space.
Cons: staff is unfriendly. Twice I overheard different guests (unrelated) comment on how rude the "English lady" was. I didn't deal with her but I witnessed he discussing a mischarge on a customers bill and she was unnessesarily rude. Acted as if she was doing them a favor by letting them stay here...
The "breakfast" they offer doesn't open till 8:30. We say many guests walking into town to get coffee due to this (including us)
The room was just ok. For the cost we expected much more. I'm 5 feet1 and couldn't fit under the shower head because it was mounted so low and the barroom was just awful. Again even at my height I couldn't sit on the toilet without my knees on the sink. The bed was not horrible but not comfortable either. Pool was nice and clean but no hot tub :(

My fiance and I stayed the weekend at Fern Grove for a friend's wedding that was in Monte Rio. We stayed in one of the studio spa rooms and it was perfect! The location was ideal for both the wedding and walking to local shops and stores in Guernville. We thoroughly enjoyed the breakfast (the scones were a hit!) and Margaret was so kind as to suggest a number of wineries worth checking out in the area! The few wineries we had time to stop in and visit spoke highly of Margaret and appreciated her directing us their way. The room itself was very cute and cozy and the spa tub was exactly what was needed after a long day of travel (Friday) and a long day of wedding events (Saturday). I would stay at Fern Grove in a heartbeat if and when we come back to explore more of the surrounding area/wineries. Thank you for a wonderful stay!!

We were pleased to welcome you to Fern Grove Cottages! We host many guests who are in the area for weddings, and are always happy to welcome new friendly faces. One great thing about our location, is the easy walk into town, with the many shops, bars, and restaurants, close proximity to the wineries, beaches, and redwood park. Glad that was part of your positive experience. Please come back again, and we look forward to sharing more of this magical area, the beaches, the redwood forests, the wineries, the river with you on your next visit. See you again soon!

We had the smallest room on the site, but still were very comfortable. The surroundings are very pleasant -- gardens and redwoods. The hosts provide local recommendations and chat easily with the guests. Guerneville gives easy access to the coast, to the Russian River, and to a multitude of Russian River Valley wineries. We definitely recommend Fern Grove as a place to stay.
