“Yummy surprise! Great for vegans/vegetarians”
Review of China House

China House
Ranked #76 of 98 Restaurants in Half Moon Bay
Cuisines: Chinese
Description: Relatively new. I think it opened about 6 montha ago? It's got great food at great prices - it's answered my prayers for a great Chinese restaurant here on the San Mateo County coast. Mango chicken is to die for, and only $8.

We stayed at the Half Moon Bay Lodge for one weekend in January. After driving all day and being at the beach, we just wanted to stay in and order take-out for dinner. The front desk of the hotel mentioned this place although no one there had ever tried it, but they had free delivery so we thought, why not? What a pleasant surprise! My kids and I are vegan/vegetarian so it is always a challenge for us to find good healthy food when going out, but this place had a nice veg menu with some great options. They even had vegetarian bao, which is impossible to find (they are usually made with pork) and we ordered it and were not disappointed. We had two other veg dishes that were delicious. They supplied us with plates, chopsticks, forks, napkins, etc., arrived quickly and the food tasted fresh and nice. We will definitely eat here again on our next visit!

HMB has a dearth of Chinese restaurants -- the available ones have been called "bad" "badder" and "worse than that" -- so when China House opened, the collective "we" had such high hopes.

The atmosphere is fine. The Service is stellar - such nice enthusiastic servers. Pricey for Chinese. But - the food is an issue. We have been 4 times (and I have compared notes with friends I trust) and all agree that they need to change the cooking method. It appears that they are trying to "cook healthy" and traditionally fried foods (General Tao's Chicken for ex.) is not traditionally fixed, but modified and not fried. It ruins the dish. Sweet/sour dishes the same. Fried rice was relatively flavor-less and when I requested increased seasoning the next visit -- it was just more soy sauce in it.

So -- unfortunately we all don't go, but just wait and go to Chinese in San Francisco. This message has been given to the owner many times, but he has his own idea. Since HMB is now a tourist destination, the shop gets a continuous supply of new visitors -- abut their local patronage is pretty slim. We hope one day they will return to traditional cooking --

We ordered 3 dishes: Chicken Chow Mein, Mixed Vegetables and Orange Twist Chicken. All three were definite winners and comparable to the best Chinese food we've eaten anywhere from North America to Europe. The food was freshly prepared, used high-quality ingredients and was flavoured and spiced to perfection. The servings were generous and we had anticipated having some boxed to go after the meal but found ourselves unableto save any for later! The noodles had a wonderful smoky flavour and the vegetables were perfectly crunchy, yet cooked (even my husband ate the broccoli and he HATES broccoli). The chicken was a delightful blend of sweetness, spiciness & orange rind. The food the other guests were enjoying looked equally appetizing and well-prepared. We're looking forward to sampling some more off the menu. The prices were more than reasonable (the two us ate for $28 and that included beverages). The atmosphere was casual and inviting, not pretentious. We are definitely recommending this place to our friends back home!
