“Very good exercise”
Reviewed 3 June 2014

We parked west of the airport and hiked to the overlook. The climb is quite steep (for 67 year olds), but excellent exercise, as it isn't too long. The view is very impressive (just North of the Naval Station's mushroom tower), even when the wind blows 40 MPH and it is overcast and spitting mist. The trail gives you the option of a short figure 8 (our choice, 1/2 hour) or a long figure 8 (for the more fit or adventurous).

“There isn't that much to see, bu you need to see it”
Reviewed 28 May 2014

So this is where the big surf contest takes place every year, but you will not really be able to see a whole lot. Find your way to the parking lot and then walk the 1/4 mile down to see the beach. On some days when the tide is down you can walk to the Fitzgerald reserve from there, but be careful if the tide comes back up you will get stuck and have to walk a long way back. It is worth it to see on a day with big waves just to see it. Bring your binoc's so you can see the waves, they are way out there.

“Big Waves and Big Fun”
Reviewed 4 March 2014

A once a year opportunity to see the best surfers in the World. The Mavericks in Half Moon Bay is the big wave surfer competition that separates the men from the boys. These are some of if not the biggest waves int the world, that hit the Northern California coast once a year. if you are in the area, its a must see. Although, over the years safety has put patrons off the cliff and onto land making traffic a problem if you go.

We parked and walked out to the beach area the day before the competition was held here. It is a nice path along the Half Moon Bay Harbor and then around the corner to the beach. The actual area where the big waves can be is a ways out so bring binoculars to see the waves that break there from the beach. On the day of the actual surf event they will not let anyone go close to the beach and block it all off which is such a disappointment. Guess a few years ago the waves came up on the beach and injured some spectators so now if you go when it is happening you have to watch the action from large screen t.v.s which was fun but just not the same as actually being out there. Still worth a hike to see where it is held and a fun time to visit Half Moon Bay to see all that is going on with the event. We had a chance to meet Jeff Clark in person as he has a surf shop on the harbor in Half Moon Bay so that was really nice. Cool shop too by the way.

“Big Wave Competition”
Reviewed 29 January 2014

We traveled to HMB primarily to experience the "Big Wave Competition" at the Mavericks on January 24th. People are no longer allowed on the bluffs overlooking the ocean and the surfers so we bought the tickets to sit in the Oceano Hotel's parking lot and watch the whole thing on jumbotron TV screens. while is was wonderful to be in the company of so many surf lovers, no being able to see a single, live surfer or the waves at all was a downer. They did their best but the transmission on the TV and the general coverage and commentary left a lot to be desired. Too bad.
