We found the Half Moon Bay Inn through Trip advisor as it was the highest rated in the category/location we were interested in. We were walk-ins for a two night stay the week after the region had suffered evident disruption from the Japanese Tsunami, so I think they were glad to see visitors back.
In any event, we received a very warm welcome and almost immediately decided this was what we were looking for - a decision we never regretted for one moment of our stay.
The Half Moon Bay Inn has the ambiance & intimacy of a good bed & breakfast place, combined with the facilities and standards of a good hotel... at least as far as the rooms are concerned. We chose a 'queen' room with a view out to Main Street and were delighted with it. Essentials such as "posh" toiletries appealed to the lady of our party, while the free WiFi and decent cable system got my blokish seal of approval.
A lovely touch here is that each room has its own guest comments book, which naturally we enjoyed reading. There were a few pages suspiciously torn out, but only a few, and the rest were overwhelmingly positive. As well as praising the hotel and the room specifically, many previous occupants had chosen to share hints & tips from their stay - kind of like Trip Advisor without the internet!
We gained a lot from this, including the necessity to place a hand towel behind the bed headboard to prevent it knocking on the wall (from the most innocent of movement on the bed!). Less specific to the room were tips about where the best view of the sunset over the Pacific could be obtained in the area and, despite a little cloud for our visit, this proved spot on (answer: from the free public car park at the Ritz Carlton just down the coast!)
Speaking of parking, the hotel doesn't have its own space, but issues permits to use the city owned lot across the road. Security in the car park is minimal, but HMB strikes me as the sort of place where that doesn't matter.
Highly recommended for that family run establishment feeling, combined with sufficient care and attention to ensure the place was spotless.
