The fridge in the room was broken. We called for service and we're told to wait for the next maintenance man. It was never fixed. The phone was also broken so we couldn't rely on a wake up call. There was an event that we were told was ending a 6 pm. It lasted all night. We we're told they only had first floor rooms which ARE really loud. I just wish the folks at the front desk would have been more honest with us. If you're going to give us a crappy room and there is a party next to it, at least be honest about it.

We stayed here for a wedding recently and were pleasantly surprised. The rooms are spacious (perhaps 25' by 15'), and most have a balcony. We found them to be clean and quiet. The most memorable aspect of our stay was the complimentary breakfast, which included a waffle station and a selection of very fresh bread and fruit. There is no shuttle to the town center, which is not walkable, so plan accordingly.

I use Tripadvisor regularly when planning trips, and I am really glad that I took reviews seriously when it came to this hotel. It is a basic hotel in a pretty setting. The room was large and it was very clean when we arrived (it even had a "just cleaned" smell). The breakfast provided was basic: breads, cereals, make your own waffle kinds of things. I had read that the walls and floors were very thin, so I called the night before our arrival and requested a second floor room, as suggested by fellow Tripadvisors. Excellent advice! I had also read that the outside corridor was very noisy and people had a hard time sleeping, so I brought a small fan to create some white noise. Excellent idea! We slept soundly, with no interruptions. We did not hear a peep from any other guests until we turned off the fan that we had brought and, all of a sudden, we could hear every person coming up the stairs, walking by our door, even the shower of the room next door! It sounded like they were in our room without the fan! The advice that we gleaned from previous guests definitely made this a positive stay for us.

Room Tip: Request a second floor room. Bring something to create white noise, if you can.

Stumbled upon this hotel via Expedia and trip advisor. It was very clean and comfortable. The pool and jacuzzi were lovely. Breakfast was fine porridge, cereal, fruit, toast, pastries, hard boiled egg. Plenty of places to eat close by.

The only complaint Is that it is very noisy if you are on the lower floor it's really noisy with people clomping about over head.

You get a view of the golf course only at this hotel. We were disappointed at first, thinking it was on the bay. However, once you get here, the nice rooms, full TV service with HBO, fast internet, breakfast with waffles, and beautiful pool and spa areas fully make up for it. Overall, a very nice 2 night stay for us.

Room Tip: Since the view is primarily garden, you might just want the first floor instead of floor #2.

Stayed here for a Saturday night overnight stay. If you are expecting a luxury experience then you better book the Ritz because this is not it. It is a fairly basic hotel, although the rooms have been recently remodeled. It is pretty expensive for what it is, but with the Ritz right next door they can charge this rate which is 1/2 to 1/3 of the rate at the Ritz which can be well over $600 just for the room.

Rooms are fairly large, although the furnishes are a bit tired and pedestrian. Although, you are less than 1/2 mile from the Ocean, you almost will feel like you are staying at a Day's Inn in Anaheim without the tract housing. The rooms all have a small kitchenette area with a sink, coffee maker, and refrigerator. Bathroom is clean and updated with combined tub and shower, but, again, nothing special. Personally, I was not very keen on the design, but maybe it works for some people. Some of the rooms have working wood-burning fireplaces with an included small bundle of wood and kindling if you chose to use the fireplace.

Rooms are on one of two levels. If you have a choice, try to get one on the 2nd floor as you will get a slightly better view. All of the rooms overlook one of the two golf courses (Old Course) at the Ritz. On the 1st floor some of the rooms can been seen from the course and some of the guests walk in that area so keep your curtains drawn if you are concerned about your modesty. WiFi is free to guests and large TV with a fair number of channels, including some premium channels. There also is an included continental breakfast. Pretty basic continental breakfast, so look elsewhere if you looking for a hot breakfast, but if all you want to cereal, juice and coffee then you will be happy with the breakfast.

I found the staff to be very helpful and courteous. When we checked in the person working the front desk offered us a 2nd floor room with a nice view. Unfortunately, the room was already occupied when we went to the room. Fortunately, those guests were out of the room at the time. When we went back to the front desk, he was very apologetic and offered us a free bottle of wine for our trouble. I have had this happen a several other times at other hotels, including a couple of upscale hotels, so I don't ding them for this. The checkout was quick, courteous, and professional.

There are a number of places to eat nearby. Downtown Half Moon Bay is five minutes away with a number of restaurants. If you don't want to spend a lot for a meal, there are a number of fairly inexpensive places nearby. Depending on your hankering, you can find Italian, Asian, seafood, Mexican, and pretty much anything else you might want.

The Ritz is less than 5 minutes away with several (expensive) food options. However, call ahead for a reservation if you want to eat at Navios or weekend brunch as it can be difficult to get in at the last minute. Mulligan's is somewhat more affordable if you want to eat at the Ritz, but it is attached to the pro shop and not in the main hotel. I probably wound not make a special trip there, but if you are hungry and don't want to spend a bundle, it will do in a pinch. However, Ritz is a great place to grab a drink in the lobby bar or little bit less formal meal if you don't want the expense of Navios which is their high-end restaurant.

If you are into walking, you can walk to the beach from the hotel, but it is about a mile or so walk. The views can be stunning from the bluffs, but there is fairly easily access to the beach. Note that the weather in Half Moon Bay can be as much as 30 degrees cooler than just five miles over the hill further inland. Temperatures seldom get out of the 70s and depending on when you go, you could be socked in with fog for a good part of the day.

If you plan to golf, you have your choice of the Old Course or the Ocean course at the Ritz (Links at Half Moon Bay). Neither is a links course despite the name. Ocean as the name says does play near the Ocean, but for the most part you don't see much of the Ocean. It is very open and significantly easier than the Old Course. However, it can be tough when the wind is blowing hard. Note that you do not come back to the clubhouse at the turn, although there is a snack bar after the 9th hole. Unlike the Old Course, you are allowed to walk the Ocean Course. in addition to be more difficult, the Old Course is surrounded by houses as you wind your way through the course. In fact, you will pass next to the Half Moon Bay Lodge early in your round. The 18th hole on the Old Course is the most scenic hole on both courses, although be careful of an errant shot hitting any of the many guests having drinks just above the 18th green.

So if you just looking for a place to rest your head with easy access to the beach and surrounding areas then Half Moon Bay is okay for a night's stay. If you golfing and staying overnight in Half Moon Bay then this can be an alternative to the Ritz. It is expensive for what it is, but with the Ritz right next door they can price accordingly. Just don't expect much more than a basic hotel stay and you probably will not be disappointed. If you are looking for that special place to stay for a romantic or special weekend then you probably want to look someplace else.

Room Tip: Ask for a room on the 2nd floor.

I stayed in this hotel with my family over spring break. From here we were able to go up and down the coast easily, see the sights of San Francisco and appreciate the majestic John Muir Woods.the hotel is a little dated but clean. Breakfast is wonderful and the pool is excellent. We had a great stay.
