“Nice Rooms- unexpected!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 26 August 2005

I'm used to staying in higher end hotels than the Holiday Inn, but this place surprised me in how nice it actually was! Although not much to look at exterior-wise (looks like a typical roadside motel), the rooms are quite nice- soft beds, nice furnishings, and small touches like bottled water and snacks made us feel welcome. The bathroom was also nice- a massaging showerhead and plush towels. Breakfast was also included- hot cinnamon rolls, donuts, cereal, fruit, etc was offered- yummy! All in all, it was a great place for just spending the night and at a reasonable price too.

We ended up here because on the day before our stay in the area we found that Expedia messed up our reservations at a local B&B and the only other lodging in the area was the hostel at the Point Montara lighthouse. First, the good news. It's just a few blocks to the beach or to downtown Half Moon Bay and a block from a corner strip mall with a Safeway and Longs Drugs. The staff was pleasent and friendly. The room was clean and everything we needed to use worked. Now, the bad news. The property is right on a busy highway so there is lots of traffic noise. The windows are double paned, but that doesn't help much as far as keeping the noise out. The walls are thin and we could hear the neighboring guests and clearly hear the plumbing in the unit above us. We had the misfortune of being near some young adults who were drinking, smoking, and socializing in front of their unit (the rooms are all non-smoking) well past the time of night that is acceptable. The staff did attempt to deal with them and ultimately ended up calling the police to get them to behave. I realize that the behavior of the guests is not the property's fault, but the proximity to the busy highway alone is enough to keep us from considering this property again.

My wife and I stayed at the Holiday Inn Express at Half Moon Bay for one night in June. The room was booked on the website for $96. The HI Express is a two-story motel on Highway 1 that has been converted from another brand. Unlike the newer models which are semi-luxurious, the interior was quite nice but limited by the existing floor plan. Service and breakfast were top-notch. This is the most central of motels, within a few blocks of main street with specialty shops and cafes, five miles north to the marina with several fine restaurants, several miles south to the Ritz-Carleton which is a sight in its self with the affordable Promenade restaurant. It seems that the whole area is either a beach or magnificant scenery. From San Francisco, this would make a great sidetrip, especially the drive from Pacifica to Half Moon Bay which is as good or better than Big Sur. The Holiday Inn Express would be ideal for budget-minded travelers.
