“Very Nice Place, Beautfiul Location”
Reviewed 23 February 2014

Not super fancy, but well appointed. Junior suite has a living room with a fireplace, a kitchenette that is pretty well stocked, a balcony that overlooks the ocean and the harbor, two TV's, free WIFI and a stereo system. They give you a 15% discount if you stay multiple nights. Staff was very helpful and friendly. My flight got in early and I showed up at the hotel a little after 10:00 AM on a Sunday, they took my bags for me as my room wasn't ready yet then called me a short time later to tell me they had it ready for it. I was in my room by 11:00 AM at no extra charge and they had my bags brought up and waiting for me without having to ask. Nice service.

Room Tip: Stay multiple nights if you can to bring the overall cost down for your stay.

The Beach House has a wonderful location at Half Moon Bay - perfect views. We had a 3rd floor balcony suite (Penthouse) with beautiful harbor views - close enough to the south to watch the surfers and surf. Could hear the foghorn but wasn't disruptive. We started in a 1st floor room and had trouble with the door locking mechanism to the sliding door. They quickly fixed it but then we couldn't get it open so they quickly and easily moved us. We learned the next morning they have back-up 'security sticks' they lay in the tracks of the sliding doors for added security -- had we known this and removed it, I'm sure it would have easily opened after the lock was fixed. So, check for the 'security stick' if you have difficulties with the door! Otherwise, this was a great stay - and they were so willing to work with us I hesitate to even mention it other than to say check for the stick!

Room Tip: Pay the extra for the Oceanside view rooms - you'll be glad you did.

Dear MissouriPam,

Thank you for the review of the Beach House. We do have several levels of security here at the Beach House and it sounds like it worked too well during your visit. When you are back on the West Coast we look forward to hosting you again.

OK, Northern California in February can be a mixed blessing - long, hard drought followed by a week of pounding rain (our week). But it isn't Canada at -20 Celsius and any water that isn't solid is fine by me. The hotel is was very enjoyable and the staff were pleasant and helpful. The room, a penthouse suite, was clean, comfortable and spacious. Very much enjoyed the fireplace. However, I would argue that the overall room maintenance is slipping somewhat. The paint was badly scuffed by an armchair in the great room area and also by the entry door to the suite. Also, a knob was missing from the chest-of-drawers. Others were loose. The seat covers on the dining chairs had food stains. Perhaps these are minor points, but when you profess to be the best, these things count. The included breakfast could have used some cereal (instant oatmeal??) and yoghurt as a healthier choice over the calorie and fat-laiden pastries. This is California after all... While there is a two-burner stove, a microwave, fridge and dishes provided in the suite, there are no cooking utensils. Cooking is not encouraged because there is no fan (explanation given at front desk). And perhaps they are right - who wants to smell other peoples cooking in an up-scale hotel? So, no fans = bad smells. But why no fans in the design phase??? And as to the fog horn mentioned by others - yes it is there, but so is the ocean. The California coast is not a remote oasis - it is a densely settled, narrow piece of geography that happens to have some spectacular views and many activities. The "Beach House" makes the most of its environment and except for the minor nits that I picked, we had a great time and were pleased with the hotel. Given the opportunity, we would return. But pick the ocean side, not the highway side, if possible. I suspect, also, that this coast is very busy in the summer. Surfers were already out in significant numbers nearby - a two minute walk from the hotel. Hope this helps.

Room Tip: Seaside corner rooms have great views and are quieter. Did not stay there, but suspect the fast mov...

Had a 3rd floor balcony suite with awesome views of the harbor, the surfing beach just to the south (close enough to watch the surfers and hear the surf), the sunrise, and, best of all, the gorgeous sunsets! (At least 1 other reviewer cautioned about the noise of the fog horn, which apparently goes 24/7/365, but after about an hour there I literally got so used to it I no longer heard it unless I thought to myself, "Hey! Did the fog horn stop!?" And I am normally very sensitive to extraneous noise). The room, especially the bathroom (especially the shower), was very nice, the mini-fridge came in quite handy, and the fireplace (with very easy to use fake logs) was a very nice, romantic touch. It is adjoining Sam's Chowder House (see separate review) so is a very short walk to it, but you will not need to go anywhere for breakfast as the buffet was great, and the evening wine & cheese selections were also quite good! Make sure you take advantage of it and sit in front of the large lobby fireplace and talk with the friendly guests! Lastly, everything we saw was very well maintained with no signs of any repairs needed, which we have found is a drawback to a lot of places, but not here. And the staff was also very friendly. (As were the birds, 1 of which (starling?) hopped about 10 feet into the room in the morning and sang to us! OK, it was begging for food, but it was still singing!).

Room Tip: Pay whatever the extra is and get an ocean view with a balcony! Very well worth it!

We went for a Saturday night getaway to celebrate our 15th wedding anniversary. We had a partial ocean view room on the third floor (room 318). It was well worth the extra $30 and the view was great. I believe the junior suite is their standard room but it was so spacious we wouldn't have needed any more - maybe if we had the kids.

The property is steps from the beach and right next door to Sam's Chowder House. You can walk right down the stairs to the beach, enjoy a nice sunset and then walk to dinner. The front desk called ahead for a table for us.

The room was modern, spacious and incredibly comfortable. A storm came in, we had a fire in the fireplace, we could have stayed there forever. Can't wait to go back.

Room Tip: We were on the 3rd floor facing south and it was a beautiful view.

Dear John P,

Thank you for your kind comments. The fireplaces are some of our best features, and on a stormy winter night add just the right amount of ambiance. We hope to see you again next year (if not sooner). Also, the traditional gift for the 16th wedding anniversary is silver hollowware; just in case you want to get a head start!

We live about 2 hours from this resort and I felt like we were thousands of miles away. SO relaxing and the views were absolutely beautiful. The hotel accommdations are VERY nice and the staff ever so helpful and courteous. I would stay here again in a heart beat. Lots of great restaurants within minutes from the resort.

Room Tip: Ocean view was well worth the additonal cost.

A group of us stayed here recently as part of a business get together. Whereas the meeting rooms are way over priced, the location and accommodations are quite nice. Service for our meetings was very good and attentive. In the mid $200s per night, you can get a nice room looking out onto the ocean and little harbor.

Most of our rooms were the same with a nicely outfitted, spacious bathroom, an elevated sleeping area behind a living room area, a fireplace and a deck. Enjoying the sunset from one's deck or even inside the room with the blinds up and the door open, is a pretty nice way to wrap up the afternoon before going out to enjoy one of the many nice restaurants in the area.

Parking can be a bit tricky when the surfers are going nuts in the area, but on the worst days they confirm that you are a guest, ensuring that most everyone will have a parking place. There appear to be just enough for all rooms.

They have a small heated pool and spa (not working the two nights we were there, but still maintained hot), making it an ideal location to warm up in the evening.

There are newer choices in the area, and of course the Ritz is at the top of the heap, but for the $ this is a good place to stay to enjoy the area for several days. Cheers!

Room Tip: Splurge to stay on the ocean side with a balcony. Falling asleep to the sound of the waves is nice...
