“Great views, awesome room, perfect weather”
Reviewed 27 June 2014

My wife (!) and I visited for a couple of nights for a short honeymoon. We live in the Bay Area, so it was just a short drive down the coast. We arrived on a Sunday night, immediately took advantage of the hot tub, and spent a wonderful Monday doing nothing but eating, drinking wine, watching soccer, and enjoying the great weather.

We were upgraded to a bottom-floor ocean-view room, and it was great. The room was big and had a kitchenette and two tvs (for watching multiple World Cup games!). The patio was larger than those on the upper floors, and there was no guardrail or anything to block the view of the harbor and out to Mavericks.

The continental breakfast was pretty solid, and we took a tray back to our room and ate on the patio. We had a couple of bottles of wine out there later in the day. We also went wandering over toward Pigeon Point and Mavericks Beach, which is a leisurely walk, and found a place to eat that was not Sam's Chowderhouse. There are several restaurants a short walk away.

Definitely a place to visit again. It's not a bad price compared to other hotels in the area. We did go on weekdays, so it was probably less crowded than a weekend. I'd try to get the bottom-floor ocean-view again.

For the faint-of-ear: the foghorn sounds pretty constantly. Some people (like the two of us) love it, but others can't handle it.

Room Tip: The bottom-floor ocean-view rooms have an open patio; upper floors have smaller balconies with guard...

We had a suite on the top floor and really enjoyed looking out at the water every day. Plenty of room to roam, good views, comfortable bed.... What more could you want? The hot tub was nice and hot, breakfasts of pastries, fresh fruit, juice and coffee were fine. Nice walking paths along the beach right outside and plenty of restaurants within a 10 minute walk.

Room Tip: Be sure to reserve a room with a view of the water.

Dear KSKat,

Thank you for you comments on Tripadvisor. We very much enjoyed hosting you on your Californian Trip! We are very close to more than a half dozen restaurants and shops within a 15 minute walk on the convenient Coastal Path (and we even offer up flashlights if you're out after dark). I wish you safe travels and hope to welcome you again one day.

We stayed here two nights and had a suite on the bottom floor with a patio that looked onto the ocean. We both really enjoyed sitting on the patio to read and watch the ocean. There is a large rock jetty where locals go to fish and a simple trail that goes from the hotel to the boat launch area.

The beds were comfortable, and our room had some nice amenities---stereo, DVD player, 2 TVs. The only thing I found somewhat annoying was the blowhorn out in the bay that would go off every few minutes. Even with the sliding door and windows shut, I could still hear it.

The staff was great---very attentive and responsive.

Dear MrBunny,

Thank you for your comments about your recent stay. We are always happy to hear guest experience! The sound of the fog horn is constant, but we refer to it as "coastal charm". Our location, however, can't be beat. We are nicely situated between town and the harbor where our guests enjoy local restaurants, shopping, and activities; and at the end of the day, a warm and welcoming staff to ask you about your adventures. We hope to see you in the not too distant future.

We stayed here for a night during our honeymoon. The hotel is beautiful when you drive up and the people at the desk are great and the views from the rooms are beautiful too. I got to the hotel really early, about 11:00 and asked them when check in was and it was 4:00. They took my number and said if anything became available they would call me. They called at 1:00 and said I could check in anytime. I bought the seaside escape package which included dinner at Sam's Chowder House which was great and about a 2 minute walk from the hotel. The room was fantastic and quite large. I had no complaints whatsoever. The horn from the lighthouse that people talk about does go off every few seconds at all hours. Once you close the doors you cant even here it. I know people want to leave the doors open to hear the waves but that is about the only thing you sacrifice here. The location, views, rooms, service, and everything else is way worth it. I will definitely stay here again.

Room Tip: Get the ocean view rooms with the balcony on the 2nd floor.

Wife and I decided on a quick weekend trip to Half Moon Bay. The front desk staff was excellent, friendly over the phone when we called to see if we could check-in early (we could), and they were efficient during the check in process and even recommended some great restaurants in walking distance. We stayed in an standard ocean view room which while clean and well maintained, was showing its age. The bathroom was also clean but needs an update/renovation soon as it had tiles that was missing caulking and didn't feel like it matched the quality that you would expect for the price of the stay.

We took our 1 1/2 year old son to play in the hotel's small heated pool, which is located next to an RV park. The front desk offered beach towels and even gave us an inflatable beach ball which our son loved. Other reviews had mentioned a fog horn, which we could hear if the patio door was open but when we closed the door at night, the horn wasn't audible.

The hotel served a standard continental breakfast, various pastries, bagels, muffins, coffee, oj, milk etc. In-door seating area was limited to the main lobby which had really tiny tables.

Overall, a well maintained hotel (they were painting some of the baseboards on the 2nd floor) in a great location that is due for a major renovation as maintenance only gets you so far, especially for charging a high price.

Dear Randy F,

Thank you for your comments. Our engineering team does work hard to maintain the hotel and we are lucky to have them and it is very hard to beat our location. We take the quality of our customer service as well as rooms very seriously and are always looking for ways to improve so we remain the #1 hotel in Half Moon Bay.

This was our last stop on a two and a half week trip up the PCH from San Diego, and to be honest I wish that we had just driven straight past and onto San Fran as this place wasn't cheap and was very unexciting. We had a suite as this was the cheapest option for the four of us, and whilst it was spacious it really wasn't particularly plush or comfortable, it felt a bit grubby. My daughter was edited about the pool but we were very unimpressed by it, and the breakfast was fairly ordinary too! Half Moon Bay is an awesome place to watch surfers, but I wouldn't really recommend staying here!

We stayed in Carmel valley most of our vacation time and decided to spend last night at "luxury boutique" beach house. It is not luxury, not boutique as description says and it is so not relaxing in my view. There is RV camp park on a left, big restaurant on a right and hotel is on the busy road. Rooms are outdated. Blankets had funny smell. The view from the room is great and you can walk out to the ocean but there are so many people passing by (to restaurant or RVs, i dont know maybe they are at hotel too ) there is no privacy. Breakfast is overload of carbs (kind of stale) - no healthy options, only cut up pieces of not so good looking fruit. And it is all set up in walk thru area by reception.. Outside patio is nice though.
I wish we stayed at the valley and drove 2 more hours to airport that morning instead of spending night at the beach house. Comparison between Carmel valley lodging and beach house lodging was just so disappointing. And price was pretty much the same.

Dear Alena-voyage,

Thank you for taking the time to share your comments on Tripadvisor and sorry to learn you had an atypical experience. The Beach House has earned a reputation as a romantic, quiet, and coastal getaway. A true destination hotel. Our breakfast offerings are small but fresh daily and again apologize that there were items not up to standard. If guests are not interested in our continental breakfast, as sometimes the case, we are more than pleased to recommend some local breakfast spots. Again thank you for your comments as these points of view help to make us better.
