My husband and I live less than 2 hours away. Most people would question why we even stayed in a hotel when we could get away with just doing a day trip. But, let me tell you, this was the best little getaway vacation we could've planned. The hotel staff were so warm and welcoming from the second we arrived. Our balcony room allowed for day-time lawn chair reading, and late-night fireplace cuddling. Sam's Chowder House couldn't have been even more convenient to walk to and from. There is so much to do in Half Moon Bay, and this hotel offered a great, simple, clean spot to call home for the weekend.

Room Tip: We opted to upgrade to the ocean view room and are so glad that we did! Waking up in the morning to...

Dear Sandra A,

Thank you for sharing your comments. Sometimes the trips closest to home are the most memorable. You don't need to spend a whole day driving and you return to home or work completely rested. We are very fortunate to have a hotel where guests can retreat from their lives, recharge, and return to home and work well rested. We hope you will have another opportunity to stay with us again soon.

We were looking for relaxing and romantic getaway to celebrate a 20th anniversary. We love the coast and wanted to wake up to the ocean and sound of the waves...

Pros:
Rooms are nice and large, with comfy beds and luxurious linens, robes.
Oceanview rooms provide very nice views.
Breakfast included.
The little kitchenette is helpful for eating in the room or making tea and coffee.
Some employees are very helpful (Patricia).

However, it was a disappointment. Charge you the price of a five star resort, but the service and ambiance were more of a 3 star (and in some cases that of a motel). To charge these rates, they really have to step up their service. They want to charge you the price of a Ritz but treat you like you are at a Comfort Inn! I did not get a great feeling here.

We were disappointed with:

1.Location - It is not truly on a beach. It is right by the Pillar Point Harbor, and fronted by part of the inner Harbor, and a fishing jetty. The name and website suggest that you would be on one of the beautiful sandy half Moon Bay beaches. I was hoping to wake up and take a beautiful walk on a sandy beach. We had to walk quite a way or drive to get to the beach.

2. Not so relaxing because of the foghorn - Since it's at the harbor, you will have to deal with foghorn noise all day and night. This was a pain and I had a disturbed sleep. Not the most romantic, and def not sleeping to the sound of waves.....

They charge more than other local hotels like the Oceano, Cypress Inn, Landis Shores. We paid $395 to spend the night here. Other local hotels (Oceano, Seal Cove Inn, Cypress Inn, Landis Shores were in the $250 range for that night). I hate it when hotels charge Ritz prices but treat you as if you are in a motel. There is no justification for the additional cost.

3. Most of the staff here are nice...but the guy that checked us in (Matt) was surly and unhelpful. He started things off on a less than friendly note...
We were celebrating a 20th anniversary (def a special occasion). Husband told them about it when making the reservation and they suggested he spend an extra $50 to get the romance package which he did.

Whenever possible we try to get away to celebrate our anniversary. Every place we have gone, the hotel has done a little something to make us feel special. Some send up complimentary champagne or strawberries with a Happy Anniversary card, some have sent flowers, almost every place has offered a room upgrade. Hotels are always very friendly and accommodating when they hear you are at their place to celebrate an occasion.

Unfortunately, no special treatment here... we checked in and he showed us into a very unattractive room. We asked to see another, which we liked. Then he said we could have it but he would be charging extra for it. He did not attempt to look for other nice rooms in the same category we booked, nor did he seem to want to accommodate or offer an upgrade. We feel he overcharged us since he knew it was a special day and we were not in the mood to discuss all the charges. It got the trip off to a less than great start. I would prefer a place with a Warmer welcome. How many times do you celebrate a 20th? All the while, not as much as a congratulations. Minus many points for the non helpful check in experience (we were checking in on a Sunday and were the only ones checking in at the time -- they were not busy or anything).

The romance package was a bit of a hoax -- don't bother with it. Almost $50 and they literally shoved a bottle of (cheap maybe $10 worth) sparkling wine and 2 glasses on us. Hotels usually let you check in and settle down, and then bring a nice tray with the champagne, some kind of card or greeting and maybe a flower or single rose.

At a true beachfront hotel, you go to sleep to the sound of the waves. The only sound I heard here was the foghorn and some highway noise. Did not feel very peaceful.

We paid extra to get a premium ocean view room. While they are the best rooms at the hotel, I did not feel it was worth the expense.

It's way too overpriced for this location. There are some really nice beachfront hotels in half Moon Bay.... Next time we try Landis Shores or Seal Cove Inn for a relaxing getaway. Not worth spending more than $250 a night here. They charge more than Seascape which is a true beachfront resort.

You will have to deal with either highway noise or foghorn noise. If you are on the 'garden' side you will literally be on top of the highway. It's not very relaxing. They will not treat you special if you are here for a special occasion. Not the place for a honeymoon or anniversary celebration. Fine for a family getaway since they are near the harbor 'beach' and have a pool (tiny) and jacuzzi.

Sunnymom2000,

Thank review of your stay, we appreciate all our guests feedback. While we are honored you chose to celebrate your anniversary with us we are disappointed you did not fully enjoy your experience.

We are conveniently located on Highway 1 in Half Moon Bay and we do offer spectacular views of the Pacific Ocean and Pillar Point Harbor. As we are near the harbor the faint noise of the foghorn can be heard. We understand that guests sensitive to noise could be bothered and we do provide earplugs in all of our guest rooms.

I apologize that you did not care for the original room you booked but we are glad you did enjoy the upgraded room we were able to locate for you. We do strive for all of our guests to have a wonderful experience and I'm sorry you felt the cost of the upgraded room and the romance package were not a good value.

We would love the opportunity to change your mind about the Beach House and host you again. Please contact me directly should you chose to stay with us again and allow me to personally assist you with your reservation.

I loved this place. It's not pretentious, doesn't offer world-class pampering, and has a limited amount of amenities. What it does have, though, is a wonderfully relaxing and welcoming environment that would be very difficult to beat. The rooms are comfortably worn in and have everything you need for a "get away from it all" weekend. I can't imagine a better place to read a book by the fire while the waves crash outside in the fog. There's plenty to do nearby if you want, but for me... I'll be in my room or at a table overlooking the ocean.

I can't wait to go back.

Room Tip: Get a room facing the ocean.

The Beach House is in Granada, about a 5 minute drive from the main town in Half Moon Bay. Although it's right on Hwy 1, our room faced the ocean and didn't get any traffic noise. Lots of positives about the inn and a couple of negatives. We were in HMB primarily to play golf and didn't want to spring for the room rates at the Ritz-Carlton. Bottom line, I would give the Beach House a thumbs-up.

POSITIVES: We stayed in a 3rd floor junior suite facing the ocean. The layout of the room is quite generous with the king bed on one level and the living space a couple of steps down. There are lots of drawers to unpack clothing into and the bath is very spacious with a full size soaking tub and separate shower. The living area has a full size sofa and two comfortable chairs, along with a mini-kitchenette with one burner stove, toaster, microwave and mini-refrigerator. There are dishes for 4 and a few cooking utensils.

A complimentary continental breakfast is set up in the lobby each morning with a nice selection of coffee, juices, fresh fruit, pastries and bagels. There's a hot tub for 8 and heated swimming pool off the lobby.

Service is very friendly. We checked in at midnight after traveling all day and the gentleman behind the desk found us a few fruits to tide up over as we hadn't had dinner and no area restaurants were open. The receptionists were also very helpful in recommending hikes and restaurants.

NEGATIVES: There are 2 flat screen tvs in the room. The one next to the bed is fine but the one in the living room (where we would have preferred to watch) is very small because it's tucked into a space in the wall unit. (I agree...not a big issue.) The constant fog horn, however, takes some getting used to. Our unit had a cute balcony and big windows facing the water but the fog horn every few minutes drove us to close up the room and use the fans. I had read about the fog horn earlier on TripAdvisor but thought we would be able to ignore it. Not so. Lastly, there is no restaurant at the Hotel but Sam's Chowder House is about 200 yards away along the beach path. The food is just ok but the open air bars are very popular.

Room Tip: Although the ocean-facing rooms have great views of the bay, the other side of the hotel may be quie...

Dear HoffersHawaii,

Thank you for your comments on Tripadvisor. We are very pleased that you had a pleasant stay with us. The fog horn is either loved or a source of annoyance although many guests can sort out the sound. We also provide earplugs just in case.

We stayed for the first time at this hotel last week for four nights and absolutely loved it. Everything about this hotel is perfection; great location, awesome views, nice decor and fabulous staff. The hotel and amenities are well maintained, clean and safe.
We really liked that we were able to stay at a true beach front property in a smaller, less populated area and still have easy access to San Francisco, San Jose and Napa.
I'm already looking forward to my next trip to the area and will definately be staying here again!

Room Tip: The junior suite with ocean view was perfect. We requested ground floor and the private patio was v...

We stayed 1 night in the Beach House Hotel in July; the reception staff were friendly, the room had all the facilities as described and unlike other travellers we were not disturbed by the nearby foghorn. However the decor is dated and worn, the entrance hall mats stained and dirty, the bed linen in our room was marked and not ironed as we would have expected. Breakfast was fine, with coffee and pastries and we were lucky enough to find seats at one of the few tables available. The view of the bay from our ocean view room was fine once you looked beyond the beer cans on the beach. All round a disappointment for us.

Dear Alison G,

Thank you for sharing your comments on Tripadvisor. We are vey fortunate to have the staff we do. They are very accommodating, personable yet professional. I'm sorry to learn that you didn't have the experience most of our guests have when they stay at the Beach House. We do have our exterior changed weekly; and dependent on weather and traffic, they can show wear. Our breakfast area is small, but we do provide trays if guests prefer to dine in room or on the patio.

Always one of my favorite hotels to stay at when in Half Moon Bay. Prefer the Penthouse suite, 3rd floor, in the middle for the view and privacy. Nice to go in the off-season for the reduced rates, though. Love the comfy bed, the floor plan, use of Duraflame logs in the fireplace, the view(of course) and the complimentary breakfast:high end scones, muffins & coffee + fruit.

The ONLY thing I noticed on last visit is certain items may need replacing soon. The chairs on deck looked weathered and/or in need of a good cleaning.

Room Tip: Middle rooms have the best view and of course, the penthouse suites are favorable-although more expe...
