Owner description: Wetheriggs Animal Rescue Centre is a small family run animal sanctuary now based at Thorpe Farm Centre near Barnard Castle having previously been situated in Clifton Dykes near Penrith since it started in 2006. The centre is currently home to over 600 animals, many of which have been pets in the past and are now looking for new homes. Some of the animals are brought in from the RSPCA and other animal rescue organisations and centres. There is lots to see, and visitors have the chance to get close to many of the animals and even feed some of them. We offer talks and animal handling sessions during weekends and local school holidays, and we are always happy to go the extra mile for our visitors, so if there is any animal you'd like to hold or learn more about please just ask.

Visited here with 2 children. And thoroughly enjoyed a couple of hours here looking round the animals and feeding goats etc. staff lovely and kids were very happy to get to feed meerkats and hold bearded dragon and tortoise. Yes some animal enclosures smell but that's because animals don't use toilets. Staff were feeding them fresh fruit and veg and lots of animals wander round free. If your expecting London zoo you will be disappointed. If you want to spend a couple of hours looking at and touching different animals you will enjoy it. You even get to go in the bat enclosure.

Okay, so i'll start by saying that the cleanliness of the cafe was no where near where it should be but they are trying! Yes there are a few flies flying around but I didn't go for the food I went for the animals. I've given 5 stars (even though the cafe is dirty) because I genuinely think that this place is brilliant! They have everything from miniature donkeys to bats! The staff are all friendly and happy to answer any questions that you have. Personally I loved the little piglets and baby goats running around freely for people to stroke and feed. Everything about this place if for the animals benefit so yes it may look a little unorganized but when you have so many animals that need helping you just have to go with it and have an open mind. Although there are signs saying that the parrots may bite and then you see them flying around clearly the signs just mean if you don't bother the parrots they wont bother you. Love this place and everything that they do here.

If you want a 'zoo'...dont go here... If you want to see a range of animals that have been rescued and are being cared for and you want to interact with them..this is the place for you!

I went yesterday with my family and were greeted by 3 little goats, whom i nicknamed fluffy, cheeky and Daddy goat! They were friendly and pleasant natured and let my 2 yr old son feed and pet them. They even escorted us around the whole site!

There are a huge range of animals..pigs, goats, sheep, ducks, chickens, a llama, fox, racoon, snakes, monkey, turkey, rabbits!!! And ok...not all have 'ideal' living conditions.... But then neither does ANY animal who lives in a zoo!

It is a little run down and in need of attention in places, maybe the poop being brushed up and ok...some of the enclosures aren't ideal for the animals inside. But you can see that the ppl care and are trying their best.

The staff were friendly and welcoming and answered questions when asked.

What i feel it would benefit from is little signs made to explain some of the stories of the animals. They had it on the fox enclosure and i think it would help let ppl understand the background story to why the animals are there.

Great toilets (with baby change), cafe, small outdoor play area and parking- but its not a 'day out'- maybe 1-2 ish hours.

I can remember visiting Wetheriggs many years ago when it was a pottery - what a delightful experience that was! However, things have changed... Having been in the area visiting other local attractions we decided to have a look and see what the new "Zoo" had to offer. We were bitterly disappointed to say the least. Based loosely around the old pottery itself, the "animals" on show were pretty much running free and most in poor health/condition. A lot of areas were out of bounds to the "general paying public". I have since found out this is because Wetheriggs Zoo have actually had their Zoo Licence revoked. On that basis, I am not entirely sure how they can open to public and charge for entry in the first place? I can see why this decision has been made though, given the conditions the animals are kept in and the fact it appears staff actually live in the gift shop/admissions area! I really would not recommend this as a place to visit.
