We stayed here for 3 nights in July during the heat wave. The room was small, but very comfortable with a big bathroom and a fantastic shower. Breakfast was great and the place was a good location for exploring the northern Lake District. Dogs are welcome in the bar too.

I had previously reviewed this hotel as cold. I had occasion to visit this hotel again recently and my experience could not have been more different. I arrived late, after the hotel's dining service hours, but had phoned ahead. I was greeted with warmth, showed to a table, my coat taken and a delicious meal placed in front of me. My room was lovely, comfortable and warm. I would be happy to stay here again.

Our stay at the George & Dragon was somewhat brief & hurried (this was our fault as we were on a fairly tight schedule).

We checked in around 7.45pm & explained to the very nice lady on reception that we would have to leave at around 4 in the morning. This was not a problem & she showed us to our room & then to the stairs that led to a back door where we could exit from as obviously the pub would be locked up at this early hour. The lady also agreed to make us up a packed lunch instead of us having breakfast as we had a very long journey the following day. This I have to say was a bit plus point.

For the £95 charge, our room was incredibly small & basic. A cracked mirror on the back of the door, no bedside tables or lamps, no hairdryer & no hanging space whatsoever. The window looked out over a neighbouring back yard.

After a quick shower & tidy up, we headed downstairs where we had booked a table in the bar for dinner. It's good to see that they grow & rear a lot of their own produce. Moonface opted for the lamb dish which he moderately enjoyed. I picked the veggie chilli dish & decided to add the prawns £13 & an extra fiver for the prawns. This arrived as a bowl of veggie chilli with 5 dried pawns plonked on the top, not even mixed in. It was lacking in heat & flavour & not enjoyable at all. £18 for this dish is a complete rip off.

What concerned us most was the fact that it was the run up to the local Appleby fair. Had we known this, I would never in a million years booked somewhere so close. I asked the chap serving us if they had any problems at all with travellers in the pub & he assured me he hadn't seen any so far this year & that they are kept out from the pub. This was strange, as we had already noticed two small groups of travellers drinking at the bar & two whopping great big caravans parked opposite the pub!

We will not be returning to the George & Dragon.

Came for dinner on the 18th of june and was quite disappointed with the service. My husband and I were with to close friends celebrating. We felt the food was rushed the starter's were lovely absolutely beautiful however the mains I can not comment on as they were at the table as soon as the starters were cleared didnt have any time to let it settle these are big meals only managed 2 bites and was full.. very disappointed that nobody came to asknif everything was ok. Maybe u just expect this as I work in a 4 star hotel. . Would if been nice ti ask for a few extra minutes . Overall food was lovely and service was rushed.. don't think we will be back sorry..

Unfortunately we were able to stay only 1 night on this occasion at the George and Dragon, but will definitely return. Having done a goergeous walk up Murton Pike and High Cup Nick, we arrived in a our comfortable bedroom and spacious bathroom, with time to freshen up and then be served with a delicious meal in the restaurant. The starters of the crab ravioli and venison carpaccio, follwed by the sea bass and the lamb shank were perfect, rounded off with a dinky little chocolate pot to share! The service during the evening and at breakfast was friendly and efficient. Can't wait to return!

In the area with friends for a wine-tasting so we decided to try supper here as we'd read good reviews including the national press. We weren't disappointed - even though it was quite early in the evening the place had a good buzzy atmosphere and was very nicely done out with fantastic flag floors, old wooden furniture, kelim cushions etc. Seemed to be a good mix of people, some eating, some just having a drink and chatting, so overall a friendly relaxing vibe. We all ate different main courses and each one of us very much enjoyed what we had. Service was polite and unobtrusive.

This was our first visit and we had a fabulous meal today for Father's Day. The food was delicious with lovely combinations of flavour and options for all ages. The staff were very helpful and efficient. There were also gluten free choices. It was good to be able to see the kitchen too. We will definitely be visiting again. Well done to the George and dragon!
