“Palazzo near the 405”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 13 May 2014

OMG you think upon entering; a faux palazzo-esc interior greats you complete with fireplace and chandeliers. But the concierge is so nice you quickly get over your amazement until you get to your room. OMG, it's grand! And huge! And you can see the i-405! You don't hear it, though. ANd it's damn comfortable. Bathrooms feel a bit motel -is but you forget that once you're resting in the courtyard under olive trees and fake Venetian fountains with some birds chirping somewhere. What a totally bizarre and quite wonderful experience!

I was so pleasantly surprised by the beautiful surroundings at the Ayres Hotel in Manhanttan Beach. The landscaping, tapestries and artwork were all finishing touches to a comfortable stay in a "boutique-style" hotel with competitive prices. The staff was incredibly friendly and efficient.

Green Features: I love hotel properties who are earth-friendly with attention to real plants and landscaping, auto shut-off of appliances in the rooms and reminders to simply request changed linens instead of automatically supplying unused items.

Wanted a getaway night without driving four hours in Friday traffic, so we decided to try this hotel based on the website billing it as a "luxury boutique" hotel. Check-in was efficient if not entirely informative. I had booked a Junior Suite with courtyard access. I didn't get courtyard access, and wasn't informed that they wouldn't be able to accommodate that request. I believe we did get upgraded to a one bedroom suite, which was spacious and clean, but again, no communication from the front desk if that is what happened.

As I said, the room was spacious, but that made it very noticeable that it was sparsely furnished and decorated. There was no place in the bedroom to hang your clothes, the closet was in the living room. The floors were high grade linoleum that looks like wood. There were no bathrobes, and the bath amenities were not what one expects in a luxury boutique hotel. Climate control was via two somewhat noisy units that are located under the windows, not central via ducting, and you can't set the temperature you want.

We had breakfast at the hotel restaurant "Matisse." You pay for buffet or ala carte off a menu. That's fine with me, I would rather pay for a decent breakfast than have a poor "free" breakfast room with a couple of cereals and old fruit included in the room charge. It would be nice if you could get breakfast past 10AM though. Or at least when you come in at 9:50 and pay for the buffet you should be informed that it will be closed down in ten minutes.

You are within walking distance of other restaurants, and easy driving distance of some really great ones. I didn't use the shuttle service, but if it works as billed, you would be able to get to some really nice places using it.

All in all, I would rate this hotel a step up from Comfort Inn and Suites, but not what I expect of a hotel that bills itself as a "Luxury boutique hotel" on its web site. It would be a convenient hotel to stay at if you were catching an early flight out of LAX. Just know what you are getting ahead of time and you probably won't be disappointed.

First of all, this is a very nicely decorated hotel that sits right next to the 405 freeway inland from Manhattan Beach in Hawthorne. Even though they sell it as being in Manhattan Beach, it is a 10-15 minute drive to the beaches. The room was huge and beautifully decorated, but in need of an overall updating. We had a nice top-floor, corner suite, but there are no views of anything but the parking lots of the property or shopping centers across the streets. The location was GREAT-convenient to everything in the south coast area, including LAX. However, on our second night, after returning from a pleasant day out and with our supper which we intended to eat at a table in the attractive courtyard, the entire parking lot was completely full with a number of cars hovering trying to find a stall. Apparently, management had booked a HUGE private function that not only took every available parking space, but had overtaken our courtyard for a private party, so as paying hotel guests, we ended up parking across the street in the Home Depot lot and ended up eating our now cold supper in our room with no view. I fully expected the front desk manager to make up for our inconvenience by offering a discount or even comping that second night, but she didn't seem the least bit concerned. When I asked why they had booked such a large event with no planning for inconvenience to hotel guests or hadn't held it in their ballroom instead of giving over 'our' courtyard for the event, she had no answer other than to say that such functions aren't normally that large in their hotel. A lot of good that did us!

One reviewer said they provide breakfast, but this location didn't provide anything but a large attractive suite without views or ample parking for the event they booked and their paying guests. If we hadn't come home to a zoo that second night, or if some compensation had been offered for our inconvenience, we might have considered returning. As it is, this will be our only stay at an Ayers Hotel.

Room Tip: Corner suites on the top floor are best for quiet and brightness, but there are no views of anything...

Green Features: Your room key powers the room in a slot inside the room - meaning that while you're gone for the day, unless you leave a key in the slot, the AC and refrigerator turn off, so you come home to a warm room and warm fridge.

Everyone at the Hotel was nice and friendly and the room was fresh and clean. One thing I wish they would change is the in room coffee machine, the filter is large and wasteful. I will stay there again and I would recommend this hotel.

The staff were extremely friendly, the rooms very spacious and the location extremely convenient. The entire experience left me in no doubt that this hotel is worth every penny you pay. The receptionists were always very helpful and used their in depth knowledge of the local area as well as precise directions to ensure we had a hassle free stay. Would definitely stay there again!

PS: The service at their restaurant (I think it is called the Matisse) was absolutely exceptional. The staff there was phenomenal and very friendly.

Room Tip: The ground floor rooms have higher ceilings and are more spacious

We stayed at your hotel two different times and both times our stay was very easy. We were there for a convention. Location was great, hotel was clean and quiet and service was excellent. They even included breakfast.
