“A very disappointing evening in all respects”
2 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 1 January 2014

It was New Years Eve, so the reader should take that into account when reading this review. First of all the service was terrible. The first two courses were almost clandestinely delivered to our table by two young servers who said nothing, literally. No charm, no warmth. And, these two dishes came within minutes of our ordering, before our wine had been poured. The beet salad with red grapefruit, avocado, and fennel was tasty but overdressed. A full quarter of a cup of vinaigrette remained in the bowl after my husband and I ate the salad. The dungeness crab tater tots were an ingenious, playful dish that tasted good but a bit much for just the two of us. A shot of bland butternut squash soup had a bit compressed apple that tasted like candied fruit to me, an ingredient I dislike. When our server delivered the fiore di mare, a poorly-conceived dish of crab, shrimp, cauliflower, and breadcrumbs, she asked us if we wanted clean plates, an odd request for a restaurant of this reputation. The ingredients in the fiore were fresh and well prepared but as a whole the dish didn't work for me. Overall, the restaurant was a huge disappointment.

“Chalkboard rewrites definition of exceptional”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 22 December 2013

Chef Shane McAnelly and GM Sean Coleman continue to amaze with imaginative and flavor-filled creations from the kitchen and exceptional service and style in the dining room. We enjoyed several small plates creations which are Chef Shane's signature style including Dungeness Crab Tator Tots, Smoked Mushrooms, Fiore di Mare, Horseradish Crusted Bistro Filet of Beef and the Beef Sliders! All surprised with new flavors and exceeded high expectations. We asked Sean to pair the wines for us with each dish and he blew us away with selections from Sonoma and Sicily including 2008 Ironhorse (Russian River Valley) sparkling, Unti 2010 (Dry Creek Valley) Syrah and Donnafugata (Sicily) 2011 Ben Rye desert wine. All perfectly matched with this amazing foo. Shane and Sean accomplish all of this a prices that encourage regular visits. Thank you guys!!

“Some good, some not”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 13 December 2013

We were seated promptly and after some inital confusion, were pointed towards some gluten free options on the menu. We decided to start with the pork belly biscuits, without the biscuits. The server really didn't want to do it that way, but did, while also convincing us to do two without biscuits and two with, for my husband. The flavor really was awesome, even without any biscuit. Next we tried the Dungeness crabb tator tots, which were a huge disappointment. Large squares of basically hash browns with a small dollop of crab and dot of creme fraiche on top. We've had better hash browns at diners for breakfast. We finished with the steak special they had that night, which I don't remember what it was, but is was GREAT!

“Tasty dishes come in small sizes”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 3 December 2013

The tapas style dishes were just the right portions for our post thanksgiving dinner. We shared different dishes and thoroughly enjoyed the taste of each. The warm octopus salad was a great start to our tasting experience and the quail was awesome. No wine or dessert for us this time but we plan to include both the next time we visit Healdsburg.
The service complimented the food which was excellent. U

“Great small plates”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 2 December 2013

Healdsburg has a number of nice restaurants, and Chalkboard has taken the space formerly occupied by one of the better known, Cyrus. We were in the area for the Thanksgiving weekend and had heard that Chaklboard was a 'must' so we made a reservation for the night after Thanksgiving. To start off with the most negative point, our table was in a rather packed section so it was not well set for initimate conversation, and the noise level was bit high.

Now to the important point: the food. There was a number of tasty sounding options, all small plates, on the menu so we had to narrow down the choices to a manageable 4. We started off with the Pumpkin Soup shooters, which came with a deep fried risotto ball. The soup was very good, and the risotto ball good enough once we gave it time to cool off to eating temperature. Next up were the Dungeness Crab Tater Tots. The Tater Tot portion were a great homage to a decadent item of my youth, the crab was great but the serving a bit small; it would have been much better with just slightly more of the crab mixture on top. The third dish was the star, Smoked Mushrooms which came with a pecorino sformato. Outstanding in a word, very flavorful and leaving me wanting more. Then onto a Warm Octopus salad which was very good, with the octopus cooked enough but not too much and with a dressing that complemented it well. Our last plate was the Red Wine Braised Short Rib which was well cooked with a tasty braising sauce.

Then onto dessert, which was our Waterloo. We tried two, starting with the Pumpkin Spice Donuts, a trio of small cake type donuts dipped in a dark Mexican chocolate. That was a very good dessert and was probably sufficient, but we had also ordered the Candy Bar, a brownie, caramel, nougat bar served with a small tower of mousse and a small scoop of ice cream. Outstanding, and enough to give us a complete sugar rush. Addicting.

Service was great, almost to the point of too much but not quite. Our waitress seemed to appear out of nowhere at just the right time. The almost-stealth arrival may be in part due to the close spacing of tables and noise, but she was very helpful and attentive. Overall another place we will try to visit on our regular trips to Healdsburg.
