Without a doubt the best wine we have had in the last couple of years was a bottle of Seghesio Vineyards Sonoma Zinfandel we took to a barbecue last year, a bottle left from a trip to Seghesio almost 4 years ago. That Zin was full bodied, rich, and spicy, a perfect accompaniment to the Tri Tip our host prepared. We have been looking to replace that bottle, and see how the newer Seghesio offerings have progressed so a trip here was top of our list this time to Healdsburg.
Seghesio is so close to downtown Healdsburg it is almost a sin to not stop if you are in town. It was probably 3 minute drive from downtown, or 2 minute from our hotel. The tasting room is large and well appointed, the size necessary to handle the crowds when we were there on Dec 23rd. It was pouring rain, so we could not avail ourselves of the picnic grounds but the fire inside and the warm hospitality warmed our spirits.
We came for the Zin, but was the Sangiovese hiding under the name 'Venom' that is the current star of the lineup of young wines available at the tasting room. The 'Venom' is more akin to a Brunello than to other Sangiovese styles such as Chianti; it will be interesting to see how the wine matures. Our pourer was informative and provided a personal touch despite the hectic nature of the pre-Christmas rush in the tasting room. Definitely great wines, and a nice place to visit. Next time we need better weather so we can picnic on the grounds!
