“Charming and fun”
Reviewed 25 September 2007

We had a great experience at the Camellia Inn. Our room was well appointed, large and comforable. We loved the breakfast, there was something each of the three nights we stayed and each time there was a nice variety of things to choose from and always a hot dish.

We found Lucy and Ann and all of the staff to be overly helpful and warm. They gave us great tips and insights into the area. Almost like staying with a tour guide. The Inn itself is beautiful and full of history.

The wine and cheese happy hour was a fun chance to get chat with other guests and find out tips for great restaurants and side trips.

Overall we had a wonderful time at the Camellia Inn and would highly recommend it. It is definitely a much more personal feeling than staying in a hotel, but this makes it so easy to make the best of your trip.

I would NOT recommend the Camellia Inn for a variety of reasons:

1. very 'tired' looking relative to furniture, the house itself, the decor, even chairs at the dining room table were unattractive, and old as in not in good shape --- they were not old and charming!
2. really bad breakfasts --- and since it's a bed and breakfast - and they are hurtin' on the breakfast front...well, it just is all kinds of wrong!
3. parking lot is tiny if not dangerous - and full of these things that get stuck in your car - flower/messy things from trees!
4. owner lucy NOT warm AT ALL.
5. other than the budget room --- the price per night for what you get absolutely isn't worth it.
6. one of the blocks to get to the camellia inn from the plaza area is a little creepy --- so part of your journey back to the hotel doesn't seem overly safe.

what's ok about the hotel:

1. they have a pool
2. they do happy hour every night (--- though i have to admit...the camellia winery wines are not so great --- and the cheese they serve with them are so wicked pedestrian/not very good.)
3. the scottish man who works there (i think he dates the owner lucy - or maybe is part owner), whose name eludes me, is incredibly nice and kind - very helpful.
4. the time i went...it does get a nice mixed crowd of people --- so the guests all seemed lovely.

  • Liked — honestly...nothing in particular. the pool was pretty - but that's about it.
  • Disliked — cost value benefit wasn't there.

My husband and I spent one night at the Camellia Inn, and we wished we could have stayed longer.

The inn is a victorian style mansion, with a charming decor and interesting layout. The grounds are beautiful and the pool area is so traquil. It was the perfect setting for the nightly complimentary wine and cheese gathering. It was so nice to chat with other guests and the innkeeper while sipping wine by the pool.

The innkeeper was very nice and helpful, offering a wonderful suggestion for dinner and recommendations on scenic drives and sites to see.

The location of the inn was perfect, just a 2 block walk to downtown. I would highly recommend this inn to anyone who wants a low key, relaxing get away.

What a great place for a long weekend!! We just got back from a long weekend in Healdsburg, taking in the various wineries and the town itself, which is also wonderful in its own right. Lucy at the Camellia was a great hostess, and the Camellia is a wonderful place to relax and get away for a weekend. No TV's in the room, which was actually fine, but the rooms were comfortable and spacious, and our bathroom was nice and roomy, with a jacuzzi tub as well. Wine tastings out by the pool in the evening, and a very tasty, filling breakfast in the morning started off the day on a great note. Lucy's recommendations on restaurants were spot on, and she hooked us up with Gene from Healdsburg Area Wine Tours, who took a good vacation and made it an outstanding one. We are already trying to figure out when to go back, and I would highly recommend the Camellia Inn to anyone who wants to visit the Sonoma wine country.

As soon as we arrived we were treated with the utmost in hospitality. From the home baked cookies in the afternoon, to the wine and cheese in the early evening, to the scrumptious breakfasts, all our needs were met. The room was gorgeous, spacious and very quiet. We felt very special. When we return to the wine country we will come back to the Camellia Inn.

We chose to stay at the Camellia Inn based on the reviews here, and we weren't disappointed. The location is fabulous, just a few blocks to the main plaza. The grounds are beautiful, and the staff are very hospitable and friendly. We enjoyed the early evening wine and cheese hour and the breakfast options for the morning we were there were very good (e.g., fresh fruit, chicken-apple sausage, french toast casserole, cereals, bagels, yogurt, juices, coffee, etc).

We had our 10-month old infant with us and needed an Inn that would take us. The innkeeper gave us the choice of the Royalty or Caprice rooms. From the reviewer from SF, it seems that they may only allow infants in these rooms because they are not in the main part of the house. What's nice about the Caprice is that the bathroom is big enough for a portable crib, so you can put your little munchkin in there to sleep and close the door! Also, if you don't like floral decor (which the Royalty room has), choose the Caprice (it's decorated in muted and tasteful beiges and tans).

Finally, the innkeeper helped us find a babysitter (who turned out to be the daughter of the inn's bookeeper), which allowed us a much needed dinner out at Cyrus.

All in all, a great stay!
