What a great place for a long weekend!! We just got back from a long weekend in Healdsburg, taking in the various wineries and the town itself, which is also wonderful in its own right. Lucy at the Camellia was a great hostess, and the Camellia is a wonderful place to relax and get away for a weekend. No TV's in the room, which was actually fine, but the rooms were comfortable and spacious, and our bathroom was nice and roomy, with a jacuzzi tub as well. Wine tastings out by the pool in the evening, and a very tasty, filling breakfast in the morning started off the day on a great note. Lucy's recommendations on restaurants were spot on, and she hooked us up with Gene from Healdsburg Area Wine Tours, who took a good vacation and made it an outstanding one. We are already trying to figure out when to go back, and I would highly recommend the Camellia Inn to anyone who wants to visit the Sonoma wine country.

As soon as we arrived we were treated with the utmost in hospitality. From the home baked cookies in the afternoon, to the wine and cheese in the early evening, to the scrumptious breakfasts, all our needs were met. The room was gorgeous, spacious and very quiet. We felt very special. When we return to the wine country we will come back to the Camellia Inn.

We chose to stay at the Camellia Inn based on the reviews here, and we weren't disappointed. The location is fabulous, just a few blocks to the main plaza. The grounds are beautiful, and the staff are very hospitable and friendly. We enjoyed the early evening wine and cheese hour and the breakfast options for the morning we were there were very good (e.g., fresh fruit, chicken-apple sausage, french toast casserole, cereals, bagels, yogurt, juices, coffee, etc).

We had our 10-month old infant with us and needed an Inn that would take us. The innkeeper gave us the choice of the Royalty or Caprice rooms. From the reviewer from SF, it seems that they may only allow infants in these rooms because they are not in the main part of the house. What's nice about the Caprice is that the bathroom is big enough for a portable crib, so you can put your little munchkin in there to sleep and close the door! Also, if you don't like floral decor (which the Royalty room has), choose the Caprice (it's decorated in muted and tasteful beiges and tans).

Finally, the innkeeper helped us find a babysitter (who turned out to be the daughter of the inn's bookeeper), which allowed us a much needed dinner out at Cyrus.

All in all, a great stay!

I chose the Camellia Inn after looking at the various choices of places within walking distance to Healdsburg's two-Michelin-star restaurant, Cyrus. The Camellia Inn is on a small side street two short blocks from Healdsburg's main plaza, which looks similar to Sonoma's town square, but is smaller and not yet as trendy (but it's getting there). The original building is from 1869 and has wonderful architectural detail that, miraculously, have not been ruined. High ceilings with large mouldings and corbels, the tallest double-hung windows I've ever seen, beautiful chandeliers, etc.

The inn's rooms are in a few different locations. Our room, Moonglow, had a queen sized four-poster bed (complete with stepstool to climb up), a good little heater-stove, corner windows overlooking the street with a large tree outside, a bathroom containing a pretty pink W.C. and shower, and a separate vanity with sink in the room. There are three rooms in this hallway up the front stairs. On the ground floor, there is a separate building that has another two or three rooms all with private entrances, and then there's a back stairs with a large suite at the top. The different areas of rooms provide a lot of privacy. We were traveling with another couple who were in the suite, yet we were alone on our floor, and we never even heard another guest. I really liked the separation.

The decor is Victorian with lots of antiques, and very nicely done, not just a bunch of doilies and bad floral prints everywhere (I hate that). A giant armoire in our room was more than enough room for all our things. The bed was extremely comfortable, with exquisite bedding that was much more luxurious than what I expected for that price. We are experienced wine tasters and at first turned up our noses at the "wine and cheese", but don't miss it! The Camellia Inn has their own winery and their Zinfindel is especially good. Rooms were immaculate, and I have NEVER before stayed in a room that provided a little make-up remover towelette among its amenities. There is plenty of parking in back, but we left our car on the street right in front. There's a nice pool, a lovely living room, a small TV room, and a breakfast that looked lovely, but frankly I was still too full from dinner at Cyrus to eat much. Some rooms have showers, and some have tubs, so be sure to ask for what you want. There is also a queen room that has a private but unconnected bathroom (across the hall) that rents for about $119, which is a great bargain if you are looking to save money. You won't find a nicer room in Healdsburg for that price! I very much enjoyed our night at the Camellia Inn and recommend it to travelers looking for a convenient and romantic inn in the area. (If you are bringing children, I recommend the ground floor rooms, as the stairs are a little steep.) We had a wonderful evening.

Two weeks before Christmas my daughter and I stayed at the Camellia Inn in Healdsburg. It was a magical experience. We were given a suite in the main house. The suite was like our own little home divinely decorated in Victorian antiques and ample enough to play board games or just stretch out, relax and read. The house was completely decked out for the holidays. A large tree adorned the living room downstairs. Coupled with the chocolate treats, and late afternoon wine and cheese, I was in heaven. The innkeeper, Lucy Lewand, gave us detailed restaurant recommendations and we weren’t disappointed. The restaurants she suggested were a short 2 block walk from the Inn on the plaza where we also shopped for holiday gifts. I loved parking my car in the back of the Inn and walking everywhere. Lucy and her husband Archie were incredibly gracious hosts. We plan to make this our yearly December getaway.

My girlfriend and I planned a trip down to San Francisco this past Labour Day weekend.....
And although it is a wonderful city with lots to do, the most exciting prospect of our journey was spending a few days unwinding in Wine Country.

Without question, everyone who talks California Wine Country mentions both Napa and Sonoma as the places "to be".
However, I would only recommend both as general areas to start - as both of the actual cities are lacking ambience and a true feeling of getting away.

For that reason, Healdsburg is a much better option.
Plenty of great wineries within minutes of the town square, and plenty of great restaurants.

Our highlight was definitely our charming and delightful B&B stay at the Camellia Inn.
As soon as we arrived, we were greeted with both a beautiful property and very pleasant owners. Not to mention a complimentary tasting pass - which was good at every winery we went to - and certainly saved us between $5-10 at each of our stops.

After a day of tastings in the hot California sun, we reveled in our ability to go for a quick and refreshing dip in the Inn's backyard pool. Lucky for us, this was also the time and place for the daily wine & cheese gathering for the guests.

We stayed in one of the smaller rooms - but certainly sufficient for our needs. Our one concern before staying at Camellia was the lack of an onsuite bathroom.
To be honest though, it was right across the hall from us, and perhaps larger than any other B&B bathroom we've ever experienced.

Finally, we were treated in the morning to a simple yet delicious breakfast (including great chocolate coffees and teas) to get us going on another full day of wine tasting.

I would certainly recommend not only Headlsburg as a great alternative to the larger towns in Sonoma as well as the Camellia Inn as a wonderful place to lodge yourself for a few days.

Please taste responsibly :)
