“Great Stay!”
Reviewed 12 August 2007

My husband & I returned a couple of weeks ago from a fantastic long weekend in San Francisco & Sonoma. We stayed at the Healdsburg Inn on the Plaza during our time in Sonoma. We had room #10 which was on the back of the property. Really quiet, spacious with a fireplace & lovely bathroom. There was a skylight ,though, that gets quite bright in the morning. The breakfasts were delicious in the common room; as were the hors d'oeuvres & wine in the afternoon. We found the service excellent & all the staff knowlegeable & eager to help. There are 2 bikes for your use during your stay which we took out one morning & road around the plaza. This inn is excellently situated - all shops & restaurants in walking distance. Would definitely return if in the area.

I have been meaning to write this review for some time. We were married at a winery in the area last year and rented out the whole hotel for 5 days. Every wedding guest we put in this hotel was BLOWN AWAY! The service was perfect, they went out of their way to make sure our stay was perfect. The food was out of this world for breakfast and all of our guests were so glad they choose to stay there! The magagement went out of their way to cater to all of our demands as a wedding party and it made my wedding week such a special place. The wine hours at night were a great treat and they let all enjoy and participate. If you are planning on staying in the area, make this your home!

My husband and I stayed here last week and were let down by the experience. We checked in on a Friday and were underwhelmed by our reception. For such a small hotel and the price of $364 per night, you would think customer service would be a priority. The two young people on staff that evening seemed clueless about the hotel and the town itself when asked questions. One couldn't even tell me the name of the wine being served for the happy hour. The room was just ok, and the wine hour and breakfast were just ok as well. The only nice perk was the complimentary soda refrigerator in the hallway. After spending our prior nights at the Carneros Inn for $100 more per night and the Orchard Hotel in San Fran for half the cost, our experience here just didn't even come close. We wish we had skipped it altogether. Maybe it was an off night, but if you are looking for more than just a place to lay your head, I would look elsewhere.

The Inn on the Plaza is a nice combination of a B&B and a traditional hotel. I did not feel like I was sleeping in someone's spare bedroom as I have often felt in traditional B&B's. Yet the rooms are certainly more comfortable, charming and warm than traditional hotel rooms. Breakfast was excellent and along with the afternoon wine and cheese, provided a good opportunity to compare winery and restaurant experiences with other guests. The staff was very helpful and the location can't be beat. On a rainly day large umbrellas were left by the door for guests to borrow. Healdsburg is not exactly a party town, so even though the Inn is right on the plaza I don't think noise would be much of an issue (it was not for us). We definitely plan to stay there again.

  • Liked — Comfortable rooms, lovely common areas, great location
  • Disliked — Relied on the town's internet access which was not all that reliable

Likr many Trips writers, we took advantage of the highly publicized Indulgence Package, which included dinner for two at the two-star Cyrus. Although it is tempting to include the dining experience as part of this review, I will concerntrate on the hotel experience. Yes, the reception at check-in was extremely cordial, and we were made to feel like guests rather than paying customers. The hostess not only explained the entire layout of the inn, she gave us a tour of the entire premises and even abandoned her station at the front desk, with a large sign promising to return soon. She told us that we should take the elevator to the second floor if we had luggage (it is very rare for Four Sisters properties to have elevators!). What caught our eyes first was the breakfast/afternoon happy hour room with beautiful views of the plaza and the extraordinary attention to details, like huge double-glazed windows and sea-grass carpeting. Our room, #3, also had a view of the plaza but was also sheltered by trees. The effect was almost that of being in a treehouse! The jacuzzi tub was indeed large and there were the expected touches, such as the teddy bear on the bed and a personalized welcome card. Unfortunately, there were a few lapses that need attention. The TV (quite small) can be viewed only from the bed, as the cupboard doors are not flexible and swing only out. Anyone wanting to view TV from the sitting area can only listen to the audio. Another curious problem is that the bathroom door will not close; it is simply too large for the frame.
But happy hour will erase those inconviences. Finger sandwiches, cheese and crackers, grapes go well with the white wine (not chilled). Watch our for the massive 15% alcoholic barbera (the red wine). Breakfast, taken in the same room, is served buffet style, and the extremely efficient and courteous employees will clear tables promptly. Even though we live only a half hour away from Healdsburg, this was a pleasant experience and one we may very well repeat, especially during the off-season.

  • Liked — The cordial atmosphere
  • Disliked — Some of the room fixtures need adjusting.

This property is now a part of a small B&B group called the Four Sisters Inns. They have done a lovely job refurbishing this Victorian Inn. Our room on the Plaza- quiet at night- was large, tastefully decorated, TV, fireplace, comfortable bed, and large well appointed bath with large shower and jacuzzi soaker tub. The Inn was closed for 8months for renovation and they did a great job- including all the public rooms. The manager, Jennifer was most helpful also. Our stay was part of an "Indulgent" package that included a bottle of Sparkling wine and chocolate and a meal at a local restaurant. BUT, in addition to that they routinely offer all their guests a big afternoon spread of appetizers and wine , a self-service rerigerator with soft drinks, and a great hot Breakfast.
Healdsburg, itself, has become more upscale and has less of the small town feel, but staying at the Inn provides that "small" homey feel of the past. This Inn is one of the best places we have stayed in recent trips!

  • Liked — Small friendly atmosphere and comfortable, elegant room
  • Disliked — some early morning noise from breakfast preparation, but the breakfast was worth it!

We loved our two nights at this romantic inn! We had Room 3, which overlooks the plaza. We were greated by the very professional staff, and we were very pleased with the spacious and sophisticated room. The wine and cheese hour was lovely and relaxing, while breakfast was delicious. The staff made the entire place feel like home, and the gratis sodas and cookies were much appreciated after a busy day of tasting. The only disappointment was the "fireplace." This is nothing more than a noisy heater with lights to simulate flames. Truly, this is just false advertisement. Do not pay extra for a room with what they call a "fireplace." One of the great things is all of the delicious restaurants that are within walking distance. Our favorite was Ravenous!
