“Best B&B Experience Ever”
Reviewed 22 February 2009

We loved our stay at the Raford Inn! We stayed in the very large Angelica room with a patio facing the vineyards and a sizeable bathroom (with very soft towels). The innkeepers, Dane and Rita, were extremely hospitable and made us feel at home right away. The breakfasts were delicious and are served at 9 each morning.

The Inn is located about 15 minutes from downtown Healdsburg - close enough to have easy access to wineries and the town but far enough to feel you have "gotten away from it all." The view of the mustard flowers in the vineyards from our patio was amazing, and I can only imagine how great it must look when the grapes are still on the vines.

I would highly recommend this Inn!

My partner and I spent three great nights here toward the end of January '09. The room we occupied was the Rosemary Room, which is a smaller room on the ground floor of the property. It was cozy but the price was attractive and it worked out well for us. This would be a good pick for a summertime stay as its position would result in a cool room in a region that can get pretty warm.

Dane & Rita (and the three personable and gracious employees we met) did everything to make our stay enjoyable. Rita prepares an excellent breakfast to get your day off to a good start. Late in the afternoon Dane is in charge of the wine and cheese reception. Dane has actually made some zinfandel with grapes grown on the property so if any is left of the vintage ask him for it. It's tasty.

The innkeepers are very knowledgeable about the area and its attractions so don't hesitate to ask about wineries, parks, nice drives, and so forth. Rita told us about the West County Trail (great for running, walking or cycling) in nearby Forestville. It is mostly along a former railroad right-of-way and enables you to see some pretty country and get some exercise.

The one thing to be aware of is that although the Raford Inn's mailing address is Healdsburg it actually is about 12 miles south of the town itself. If you're planning to go winetasting (or have a big meal with wine) in and around the plaza don't plan to come right back to the Raford Inn unless you have a designated driver.

The flip side of that warning is that the Raford Inn would be a great base of operations if you bring (or rent) bikes because the lovely Westside Road is a short distance from the inn. It makes for a great bike ride to Healdsburg with a return along the Eastside Road (or vice-versa).

A really old song came on the radio today. It was an old jazz standard sung by long-since deceased jazz diva backed by one of those "big bands" of a bygone era of showtunes and standards. Having been raised on a diet of stereo and digital clatter, I can only appreciate the song - lushly arranged, smoothly performed - on its own terms. The Raford Inn Bed & Breadfast in Healdsburg is an experience to enjoy with all of your preconceived inner clatter turned to mute. The property is rustic, even quaint, but beaming with its own charm and the pride of its proprietors, Dane and Rita.

The Raford Inn is best savored in the morning, when it's breakfast time. If you don't manage to have a decent conversation with others around the breakfast table, then you have missed one of the B&B's greatest experiences. Over a Mediterrean frittata, brewed coffee and fresh squeezed orange juice, we had the luxury of a morning meal spent meeting some fascinating people from all over the world. On one side of the table was a retired doctor and on the other, a United Nations employee.

We stayed in the Strawberry room, which evoked memories of grandma's spare bedroom in the country. The furniture is old, but charming (everything squeaks, from the bed springs to the couch). The room and the property's grounds are so charming as to make the audible snores of another houseguest who stayed in the room above us easily forgiven. Oh, good news for those of us who can't do without our technological creature comforts: the property has free wifi.

Hopefully you won't need to sit around using the computer too much. Appreciate what the B&B has to offer - classic, old style hospitality and comfort.

  • Liked — The hospitality of its proprietors.
  • Disliked — You can hear your neighbor snoring.

The Raford House is really a wonderful place to stay with a lot of history to tell. The owners (Dane and Rita) were very kind and vibrant people. Once you meet them they are instantly your friends. The last stay I had like this was in a nice B&B in northern England (which I would also highly recommend). I enjoyed talking with the owners at the evening wine social, and each morning during breakfast. Which brings me to breakfast….it was wonderful and most days I ate so much I was not hungry for lunch. Dane and Rita made great suggestions on places to visit, and even called in my dinner reservations.
My wife and I stayed in the Angelica Room, and loved it! We enjoyed a fire each night, and the calming atmosphere of the inn. We were so busy visiting wineries and hiking, that we never utilized the spa treatments available….but we will during our next visit.
I highly recommend this inn to anyone who enjoys a good B&B!

I had an interesting experience here. Showed up early, got to see our room, and someone else's as well, not invited by them, but at the insistence of the innkeeper - and our room was well decorated, not contemporary, but that was to be expected. The house was older than I thought it would be, but also, something to be expected from a B&B.

However, when we showed up (early again) for the wine tasting, there were only two nearly finished bottles of wine with an improbable number of people to have accomplished this, and a very congenial innkeeper who could not stop telling stories about the miraculous event of an innkeeper in the past taking wandering travelers into his manger.

Nevertheless, it wouldn't affect my decision to stay here, but I would be a bit wary of judging this place based on the merits of all the other reviews that prominently mention the Innkeepers and their names. Have you ever remembered the names of your hosts at a B&B?? I can't, but a surprising number of people here can.

It is what it is - an older home with a very nice view, located within walking distance of the best restaurant in Sonoma, with very outdated (read: Granny) styling and a home that could use more attention to fixing up than wine tasting.

I'd have to say, I still would recommend it, and we did have a good stay, just with reservations.

It's hard to top the recent 5.0 reviews, which are accurate and well-deserved. I have stayed at 25+ inns and B&Bs in California and New England, and Dane and Rita are the best innkeepers yet. They are warm, engaging people who delight in sharing the Inn and its history. The location is outstanding, within 5 to 15 minutes of great wineries, excellent restaurants and Russain River recreational amenities. The country setting in the middle of vineyards is a winelover's delight. The rooms are warm and inviting, as are the common areas and the home-cooked breakfasts are wonderful -- even the home-made Zinfandel was surprisingly good. Dane and Rita take great pride in Raford Inn, and they have much to be proud of. Everything about our stay was special.

Now THIS is how a B&B is supposed to be run.
Dane and Rita are superb hosts provided a "home away from home" feeling. Incredible hospitality, Dane and Rita can help you with dinner reservations and recommend local wineries. The breakfast is outstanding using the finest organic ingredients some from their own property – we were really spoiled. Every room is very unique. There is a beautiful patio overlooks their vineyard, a very peaceful and quiet place to spend an evening drinking some of the finest wines Healdsburg has to offer…especially Dane’s finest estate Zinfandel, which we got to taste as an added bonus - yummy. Dane and Rita really make you feel like you are part of their family. We enjoyed meeting their wonderful staff. Kristin’s amazing Jazz vocal solo on the day we departed. Thank you Kristen! You are one talented lady.
We cannot recommend Raford Inn B&B enough and look forward to more stays as we really loved our stay there. I still can’t stop talking about the place.
Thank you, Dane and Rita, for making our stay simply incredible! I couldn’t have asked for anything more on my birthday.
