Owner description: Western Science Center is home to a fascinating array of Native American artifacts and Ice Age fossils that were unearthed at Diamond Valley Lake. You'll be moved by "Max", the largest mastodon found in the Western United States, as well as "Xena", a Columbian mammoth. Let your imagination run wild as you walk on tempered glass which houses "Little Stevie", a large mastodon installed beneath the museum floor to re-create the actual dig site.

This is another well kept secret in this Area. If you want to learn about pre historic animals, you need to visit this museum.

We love to visit this small museum for the videos of the excavation of the site for the dam and the depiction of prehisoric mammoths, sabre toothed cats, and horses from that valley. Old photos of early farmers and ranchers brings us to meditate on early California--hard work and history. Lots of activities for kids, and lots of goodies for grandparents to buy for the kiddies they love. We bought some round agate-containing rocks to put in a sock and hit with a hammer to see if they contain crystals. We also bought two velvet bags of polished rocks--as many as you can get in a bag. I don't know who will have more fun, the buyers or the receivers.

Very educational and provides you with history, local culture, incredible finds that were uncovered during the excavation for the Domnigoni Resevoir. Several view sites to over see the lake and damn walls.

The exhibits were small but my son enjoyed everything, particularly the interactive archeological dig exhibits. We were a little underwhelmed by the dig finds on display and could not understand why if they found 200,000 fossils only a fraction of them were on display. My 3 1/2 year old sat through both ten minute educational films about the dig and the history of the fossils. He learned a lot. The other exhibits would be disappointing to anyone who craves information. The weapons/war exhibit had no dates by the tools, weapons, just simply said in general from stone age forward with no clear regions or explanation of weapons. The arrowheads merely had names of regions or tribes but no dates or detailed information. I was bored. My son was not.

It is small, not what you would expect viewing if from the outside. It was an interesting way to see the history of the valley and have a different perspective of Hemet area.

I have an annual pass to the museum after being hooked the first time I had visited it. The exhibits are amazing, and to think they were all found in Diamond Valley lake makes it that much better. I highly recommend getting a membership. They offer awesome activities like star gazing with professionals, guest lectures etc,
