“A Real Treat”
Reviewed 8 April 2014

We had been to Chef Melba's a few years ago when visiting SoCal and had enjoyed it quite a bit. So we were very pleased to see that it's still open and going strong when we visited last weekend. The only downside to this restaurant is that parking can be a free-for-all with the beach and Strand action. However, once inside Chef Melba's, it's a lovely little oasis with carefully prepared food, knowledgeable service and a simple, but good, wine list. We enjoyed the conch popcorn appetizer, a salad, very light cod fish and chips, and a fish stew. No room left for dessert, but the list was tantalizing. Highly recommended, especially if you like seafood.

“Many visits to Hermosa but never ate there before -- will again”
Reviewed 15 February 2014

Chef Melba's is a small bistro (perhaps 15 tables) that is located a the fringe of downtown Hermosa. We visited on a weekend night and is was quite crowded with what, almost certainly, were locals. There was a lively atmosphere and everyone seemed to be having a wonderful time. Chef Melba is in the kitchen. The menu is not extensive, but everything we ordered was very good. Each preparation had a small "twist" on what you might expect. For example, my Osso Buco had a Mexican-style pibil sauce. The seafood soup had a Thai-style preparation. The tables are a bit close together and the noise level was a bit loud. However, all in all, it is certainly worth another visit.

“Love this place!”
Reviewed 12 February 2014

We've been going to Chef Melba's since it opened and it's our choice for this year's Valentine's Day dinner even though we went here with friends last week. As 12-year residents of Hermosa Beach, I know our town pretty well and this little hole in the wall has by far the best food. It's built in a converted hamburger stand which suits Chef Melba just fine because she's right there overlooking the diners. Unless she's busy, she greets everyone who comes in, too.

There is no bar so you're seated as soon as you arrive. (Reservations are suggested.)

“My favorite place in L.A.”
Reviewed 10 February 2014

This bistro is a little gem in lovely Hermosa Beach. The menu changes weekly, and there were so many choices, that well, it was difficult to decide. The menu emphasizes seafood, but there were other choices like lamb and chicken. Also, I noticed some vegetarian appetizers and at least one vegie entrée. We started with the grilled sword squid appetizer, and you absolutely must try this. If you're used to breaded calamari rings, this will change your mind about squid. Rather than using the tentacles, they slice up the body of the squid. It's lightly grilled and marinated in a light ginger lime sauce and served over thinly sliced beets and cucumber. It tasted like ceviche. Absolutely divine! Next we shared two entrees; sea scallops served over a mushroom medley and sea bass served over lentils and vegies. The scallops were large and grilled to perfection. The sea bass was also good, but I wasn't a big fan of the spices used with the lentils. If I had to make a choice, the scallops would definitely win.....so so delicious. Did we have room for dessert? No, but that didn't stop us from sharing a chocolate box filled with passion fruit mousse, then topped with berries; perfect for two people....light and totally yummy. Service was friendly and attentive. This bistro has a lively vibrant vibe. It was totally packed on a Saturday night, so definitely make a reservation. It's a bit pricey, but worth it. I just wish I lived in L.A. as this would become my go to seafood place.

“Little Charmer”
Reviewed 7 November 2013

Other reviewers are right, what a great little spot. The restaurant is small without feeling crowded. Greeting and seating are friendly and low key. The menu is not large, but does reflect locally grown or procured whenever possible. We looked at the dessert menu first and based our entrée orders on that. Plate presentation is lovely, and you are not rushed. Petrale sole was fantastic and portions are good sized. Have dessert!!
