“Hermosa Beach great dining”
Reviewed 14 April 2014

This small local reastaurant has wonderuld food - a little loud (as seems to be every restaurant these days)...but worth the noise...Chef Melba is cooking up a storn in the open kitchen. great if you have an opportnity to watch her...get a reservation at the corner window table if you can, next to the kitchen..Love it, and she seems to change the menu from time to time....

“Not worth $100”
Reviewed 11 April 2014

We had visited this restaurant when they first opened a few years ago and had never been back. A friend persuaded us to give it a second try and both my husband and I thought it was not worth the price.
The place is small and well located but extremelly noisy and not appropriate for good conversation.
We began with a crab soup and a farro and poached pear salad, the salad was okay but not amazing and the soup was very peppery. I always feel that when too much pepper or salt are used in a dish it measn the chef did not pay attention to herbs and spices.
My husband enoyed the sole but I was surprise when a whole fish was served to me. I never order fish unless is a fillet and with all the noise in the restaurnat I did not understand what I was getting and had a hard time eating it even after the chef removed as much of the bones as possible. The vegetables that came with our fish were simply saute. I always feel that at a nice restaurant the chef should be a little more creative with veggies. The bill came to $81 plus tip and we did not have wine. I do have to admit that the waiter was very attentive and deserved the 20% tip we left but we are not going back to this place.

“A Real Treat”
Reviewed 8 April 2014

We had been to Chef Melba's a few years ago when visiting SoCal and had enjoyed it quite a bit. So we were very pleased to see that it's still open and going strong when we visited last weekend. The only downside to this restaurant is that parking can be a free-for-all with the beach and Strand action. However, once inside Chef Melba's, it's a lovely little oasis with carefully prepared food, knowledgeable service and a simple, but good, wine list. We enjoyed the conch popcorn appetizer, a salad, very light cod fish and chips, and a fish stew. No room left for dessert, but the list was tantalizing. Highly recommended, especially if you like seafood.

“Many visits to Hermosa but never ate there before -- will again”
Reviewed 15 February 2014

Chef Melba's is a small bistro (perhaps 15 tables) that is located a the fringe of downtown Hermosa. We visited on a weekend night and is was quite crowded with what, almost certainly, were locals. There was a lively atmosphere and everyone seemed to be having a wonderful time. Chef Melba is in the kitchen. The menu is not extensive, but everything we ordered was very good. Each preparation had a small "twist" on what you might expect. For example, my Osso Buco had a Mexican-style pibil sauce. The seafood soup had a Thai-style preparation. The tables are a bit close together and the noise level was a bit loud. However, all in all, it is certainly worth another visit.

“Love this place!”
Reviewed 12 February 2014

We've been going to Chef Melba's since it opened and it's our choice for this year's Valentine's Day dinner even though we went here with friends last week. As 12-year residents of Hermosa Beach, I know our town pretty well and this little hole in the wall has by far the best food. It's built in a converted hamburger stand which suits Chef Melba just fine because she's right there overlooking the diners. Unless she's busy, she greets everyone who comes in, too.

There is no bar so you're seated as soon as you arrive. (Reservations are suggested.)
