Idyllwild Bunkhouse
Reviewed 2 June 2014

We arrived on Friday afternoon with our 3 year old grandson in tow so my husband could go hiking on Mt. San Jacinto the next morning. In light of the comments that stated "walls are paper thin" we prepped our toddler to use a quiet voice so we would not disturb the other guests. He was great...it was the rude people on both sides who ruined it for us. On one side we had a drama queen in pain at 10:00 PM who called for an ambulance and then refused to go when the paramedics came. On the other side the tv was on until 3:00 AM. The drama queen woke up at 5:45 feeling great apparently because after a period of moaning and slapping our little guy said "What's she whining about?"

There was no microwave or air conditioner in our unit. The bathroom window, which was about 2 feet from drama queen's balcony, did not close. The sliding door and screen did not latch. The positives: very pleasant receptionist who guided us to a great community park and to the Nature Center. Room was clean. Breakfast was ok...scones are good, but not worth putting up with neighbors for.

We left Saturday after hiking and showering - didn't want to chance another annoying night. Will not go back.

My wife, dog, and I spent two nights at the bunkhouse. As said in previous reviews, this inn has pluses and minuses. In the end, I think the positive attributes win out. The couple that runs the property is very nice and accommodating. The room itself was small and clean, but could use updating - specifically in the shower. The shower was a rusty metal box. It took 10 minutes to figure out the puzzle of the shower valves to get a somewhat consistent temperature. The noise level from the adjoining rooms is moderate, as this is a cabin property with thinner walls. Nothing unbearable, but not ideal. The homemade scones in the breakfast basket, with strawberry jam are worth the trip alone. Amazing. The back patios are great as they offer beautiful views. We booked with an Amazon local deal and after pet fee and taxes we paid $100/night. I think this is appropriate. I don't think it's worth more. Overall, we had a really nice relaxing stay, and if they improve the bathroom, kitchenette, and wi-fi, it would be even better. We will be back!

The price was right so my fiance stayed here for two nights while we explored Idyllwild for the first time. We loved the cabin-feel to it, and the balcony overlooking the forrest was perfect for enjoying a bottle of wine. The location is great, we just walked into town every day/night so we didn't have to drive. The walls are very thin though - our second night there we were talking in bed and the lady next door was banging on adjoining door telling us to shut up. We could hear EVERYTHING that happened on either side of us. The shower was also tiny but we knew that going into it. We got what we payed for, next time we might spend a little more and try out a B&B.

We're just back from a two night stay at the Bunkhouse. It was very clean with a nice, woodsy vibe. Staff, especially Holly, were quite friendly and accommodating. Before booking, though, you may want to consider:
It was built in the 50's with no sound insulation between rooms.
The rooms are very small. Our bathroom was 3' x 5'.
Breakfast isn't delivered until 9:30 even if you request an earlier time.
Bunkhouse is right on Hwy 243. Our door was about 20 steps from the highway. We could hear road noise even with the window closed.
This is definitely a place with pluses and minuses. If you're considering booking, it might be good to read through some of the other reviews here to see if it's a fit for you.

Room Tip: We had room 3 which doesn't have a view from the balcony which is adjacent to the water tank. Th...

The Bunkhouse is a great place if you want to get away. If you want a babysitter for your kids, dog park, theme park rides, a pool, TV, etc. then this isn't for you. This is the place you go when you've had enough of that stuff. The rooms are are clean, you can prepare a sandwich, make coffee, stroll through the pines, town is 2 minutes by car or 5 minutes if you walk and the price is right.

Room Tip: This place is for a relaxing get away.

We came with our son, his friend, and our dog. The rooms were very small, the heater noisy, the walls too thin, the shower was like a camp shower, the 1 positive were the scones, they were delicious. I would never stay here again.

We got "that" deal through Amazon local, and our stay was all right! Cozy room - yes, definitely old style, but came with frig, 2-burner cooktop (which we did not need/use), kitchen sink with dishes, utensils, soap etc, mini-coffee maker, coffee, sugars, creamers. Unfortunately, no microwave, at least in our unit, and no tea. Room was dark, and there was no comfortable seating for reading etc. Bed was acceptable and room got warm and comfortable. Nice kitchen table with cloth and 2 chairs. The "breakfast in the creel" was nice - best scones ever. BUT, yes, we resented that in fact, it was delivered to the door at 9:30 (we were informed at check in) both mornings. And even the stated 9:00 am breakfast delivery time is too late to be useful. Their sound policy, as stated in the in-room book, actually says to MUTE any electronic stuff between 9 pm and 9 am! That's pretty severe, folks - we did have out TV on very low. But our neighbor included someone who practiced their recorder/flute for over an hour!! Never thought that would ever be something to endure! We had no problem with reception for iPhones, etc., as others have stated.
Location is too far out of town to walk, at least in the snow and ice. But VERY close to drive in. We had never been to Idyllwild and found it to be a very pleasant spot.
