“Artsy Coffee Shop”
Reviewed 30 June 2014

This cute coffee shop in Idyllwild is just like the town itself...unique and artsy! The coffee is delicious, and they also have muffins, etc. that are quite tasty. I absolutely loved the vibe of this place...artists chatting, tourists relaxing, hippie-types enjoying their surroundings. It's a nice spot to sit and enjoy some good coffee, while taking in your surroundings.

“A slice of Idyllwild”
Reviewed 17 June 2014

Idyllwild is, in part, a community in which fine artists, writers and others in the arts are active and interactive. Evidently, more than a few denizens among that arts subculture are driven by some mystical creative force to hang out at Higher Grounds, where one senses a touch of zealotry and, maybe, just a hint of pretense.
The coffee (actual coffee, mind you, not something laced with steamed, frothed, flavored and flashy additions) is fair. There is a selection of muffins which, truth be told, look pretty grim but are in fact quite tasty, or at least the blueberry version was.
But the scene is worth the visit: Artists communing, writers hammering away on lap tops, much conversation about the struggles and agonies of being an artist and all of it right out there in the open so everybody -- everybody! -- knows there are SERIOUS artists in the room.
Higher Ground pretension aside, the arts do in fact thrive in Idyllwild, a rich tradition worthy of celebration. If you want to experience one slightly overwrought slice of that tradition, drop in here -- just bring a sense of humor. . .

“It seemed dirty”
Reviewed 18 May 2014

The barista was really rude and it looked so dirty, I felt like it was a high end refugee camp. The coffee was so, so. The only thing about this place that was remotely interesting was the make shift stove that had the condiments for your coffee. Couldn't get out of there fast enough!

“Yumm!”
Reviewed 22 November 2013

Best latte I have had in a while! They have really good salty pickles too! Loved that this place was open until 9PM where all other places closed at 5PM.

“DRY FOOD, DIRTY TABLES AND FLOORS!”
Reviewed 22 October 2013

We decided to go into town from our hotel Sunday morning as I was desperate for a Latte. Found Higher Grounds on TA so stopped in. The atmosphere was cute and decorated very appropriately for Idyllwild. I don't agree with a previous reviewer who said nothing special. It has a nice atmosphere.

Ordered a Latte and a Pumpkin Muffin. Latte came with a thin layer of foam quickly gone. When I bit into the muffin I took two bites and then re-wrapped it. It was dry, little taste and a big disappointment. Nothing moist about it.

My husband and I sat down on the couch while I drank my Latte conversing with a gentleman from San Diego. I noticed that there are 3 two-seat tables in the center of the room to sit at. This restaurant had been open for only an hour and a half and two of the three tables were covered in crumbs and there were more crumbs embedded in the carpet on the floor. In addition the tables looked like they had gone awry, not neatly lined up. It looked dirty.

I took that over-priced muffin home and nuked it with some butter that made it then barely edible.

We won't be back. Idyllwild has too many places to go to. Skip this one!
