Manka's is not for people who bring their white noise machine everywhere. Or go to sleep with the television on. Manka's is for people who want to curl up by a roaring fire and finally read the book that has been sitting by the bed. Or the couple who wants to sink into a deep cocoon of a four poster bed and remember what they like about each other.
Manka's has service, but it is quiet. A quick knock at the door to leave your freshly prepared, linen wrapped breakfast in the morning is welcomed . And later when you are at the beach, walking the lonely surf, fresh towels will appear and beds will be made.
Bring your favorite salts for the tub. Drink coffee outside on the deck. Find the chess board and scrabble in the closet and build a fire at night. Baths, fires, cushy beds, good coffee, fresh air..... can you tell I love Manka's?

Room Tip: These are all old rooms, so don't expect fancy. Just comfy rustic. Annex rooms are least expen...

At first I was disappointed, considering how much I was paying, but by the time I left I was sorry to go. It's rustic but posh. My room, #10 was huge - more a mini-suite than anything. It had a private deck with a beautiful view, a window seat and table and best of all, a wood burning fireplace. I loved sitting in the deep leather chairs with a cognac and fire.

Manka's isn't for everyone. The area is pretty rural (as rural as Marin can get) so not a lot to do like the wine country. But no complaints abou Manka's. Breakfast delivered was wonderful. It's the perfect place if you like to hike - so many trails close by.

Room Tip: Room #10 is one of the best.

We stayed in the Inn last night and it exceeded out expectations by far! We followed Michael as he drove to our rustic upstairs "boatman's lodge" on the bay. We enjoyed a fire (already completely prepared with an ample supply of wood). It came equipped with a charming closet beautifully supplied with supplies to make coffee or tea and half and half in the mini fridge. The bedroom overlooked the bay and was luxuriously made up with Frette sheets. The bathroom was big with an great old fashioned tub. In the morning, much to our surprise we took showers in the outdoor space adjoining the bedroom. From the service to the actual space everything was first class!

if you want perfection in the bay area stay at the mandarin oriental in san fran. if you want a wonderful not everyday experience and food and nature on the pacific at its best then drive to inverness and stay at mankas and/or eat at the olema hotel. the drive alone across the golden gate bridge and then to inverness is worth a $500 tab. a day at disney world is $99. certainly one of the best drives in the world. from there you can hit pt. reyes and the pt. reyes cafe and their hog island oyster stew, cheeses. i go back everytime i am in san fran. do not expect perfection, just relaxation and awesome beauty.

Room Tip: any room. you are going to sleep there, not write a novel.

Quirky, charming....but certainly not worth $400/night. Excellent breakfast, comfy bed and nice linens, yes. But barely any lighting in the room (7), made it hard to read or see. Industrial handles on the shower---not so charming. Only one vent working on the hot tub. This is an OLD hotel, and I just don't see that it's maintenance and minimal staff justify the price.

I love hotels with personality, and Manka's certainly delivered. I decided to book the Sweet, one of the cheaper rooms, since reviews are so mixed and wanted to check it out before committing to a higher end room. Well, I will definitely be back and want to try all of the rooms! From the hot spiced cider upon check-in to the cozy furnishings and reading nook to the in-room coffee and tea to the fabulous breakfast. We had such a pleasant experience on check-in and check-out, and I felt like we were sleeping in a treehouse. It was definitely the romantic and cozy experience we were hoping for. Yes, there were a few ants, a can light was out, and I wish lotion had been included in the bathroom toiletries. But, overall, these were minor things compared to how much I adore this place!!

Room Tip: The Sweet is cute with a seating area separate from the bedroom. Two large decks are attached as we...

Another wonderful trip to Manka's. We stayed in the Boathouse, too, and damned if they didn't help us with our luggage either. For those of you who stay in "the most expensive hotels" and need help with your luggage, please go somewhere else. It's tough enough getting a room at Manka's. And the coffee-maker worked just fine in October....thank heaven's I wasn't there in July. The place is very romantic and a touch quirky; expensive as well. But worth every penny if you're in the right mood! Breakfasts are incredible, even with the New York Times. The owners have just purchased the Olema Inn, a few minutes away, to continue the culinary traditions of Manka's that were cut short, or at least abbreviated, by the fire. Rooms too will be available at the Olema. Manka's is located about 60-90 minutes north of San Francisco and about the same distance from the Napa and Sonoma wineries. It is located off of Sir Francis Drake Blvd. on the way out to the Point Reyes Seashore (about a 20-30 minute drive) and about 10 minutes to Point Reyes Station. There is plenty to do in the area, at least for short periods. It is for peace and quiet and romance if you are in the mood. If you need room service go away.......!!
