“Simply Amazing”
Reviewed 25 November 2013

Soneva Fushi is one of the best destinations I have travelled so far. Total wonderment, amazing scenery. absolutely fantastic ambiance, world class cuisines, crystal clear water, white sand and palm trees and the list goes on!

I stayed in this paradise for 10 wonderful days. The "no news no shoes' philosophy was what I really needed to unwind from the City life. It has been such a pleasure for me to get to enjoy the beautiful reefs, snorkeling with the fishes and Manta rays. Amazing!

The Crusoe villas, with its massive outdoor bathrooms and private beaches was my own oasis of serenity. I would recommend for anyone to visit the beautiful Soneva Fushi. Special thanks to Roman who took great care of me during my stay!

I am already planning my 2014 trip and would never miss it for the world.

Me and my wife went to Soneva for our honeymoon. Since it is once in a lifetime trip we planned it months before our wedding. We were very excited about it and really couldnt wait to visit Maldives and Soneva. Especially last couple months we dreamed and talked about it everyday.

Eventually the day has come and we finally made it to our dream honeymoon resort. Since the the moment we have arrived every single thing was even better than our dreams about our heymoon. The island itself is very special and unique. Crusoe villa we stayed in is was so comfortable and authentic with its private beach. Staff is always doing their best to help you. They are always happy and very friendly.

It was the best times of our lifes. I was going to say this is a dream vacation but it was better than our dreams. I highly recommend Soneva to everyone

This was our fourth visit to Soneva Fushi and we are already looking at booking again! When we arrived on the island my husband looked at me and said "i'm home" .This is an amazing place and not one you can only come to once. It leaves you relaxed and with a feeling of well being.

The service is wonderful - from our Mr Friday, Fathih, for whom nothing was too much trouble, and appeared like the shopkeeper in Mr Ben (for those that remember that great program) whenever we realised we needed something, to Ravi, the head chef at 'Nine' restaurant on the island, who not only cooked us some amazing meals but also gave my husband a cookery masterclass. Our waiter Shirodhara who was always there when you needed him. My husband and I had the same for breakfast every morning and after a few days he would just bring it, along with some extra's to sample.

This team is led by Laurie Burr, the General Manager, who is a pleasure to meet and runs an excellent team of caring, genuine people, who just want to make every day of your holiday special.

Soneva Fushi is low key , no shoes , no glitz , no show, no pretence resort, offering lazy relaxed days being pampered at the Spa, enjoying wonderful cuisine in amazing surroundings, with lovely people who want you to enjoy the island and the experience.

Soneva Fushi should be one of the seven wonders of the world and on everybody's list to visit at least once, trouble is , you won't !!!!!!!!. Thank you Laurie and everybody at Soneva for yet another wonderful holiday in paradise.

Dear Guest,

It is a pleasure to see you mention names of hosts who have made your stay special; we have shared your wonderful feedback with them all. From the moment you arrive on a seaplane and land at Soneva Fushi international airport (a pontoon close to the offshore sand bank) and they take your shoes off you and put them in a "no news no shoes bag" you know you are somewhere very special.
Understated luxury is their promise on which they deliver. No unsightly over water villas spoil this beautiful place. We have now been six times and the experience just seems to get better.
The food is wonderful and they cater for all possible tastes.
It is not a cheap holiday but we believe it provides very good value for what you get.
We learnt to dive at the island dive school (Soleni) on our first visit and have dived each time we have visited. They have an ability to make you feel part of their family and we feel very sad when we have to leave. We have dived at other resorts around the world and none of them hold a candle to Soleni.
Returning guest are made to feel special and the resort give a number of benefits to entice you back.
We know there are many great resorts in the Maldives but, for us, there is only one choice.

I have never done a review on tripadvisor, yet been lucky enough to stay in many wonderful places around the world. The experience we had at Soneva Fushi has inspired me to write and tell you about it!
I had always dreamed about being 'stranded' on a desert island and living the Robinson Crusoe experience. Finally it came true. The resort keeps very much to its philosophy of the slow life; keeping every detail simple and as it would be in nature, using mostly materials that would only be available on a desert island and otherwise materials that blend in with the surrounding nature. No plastic anywhere in sight!! Wonderful! Even the outdoor shower next to the pool (going up against a palm tree) has a bamboo encasement so you don't see the pipe. All the structures are tied with twine. The furniture is made of real driftwood (of course beautifully finished)
Then there is the jungle with its winding paths and roads that everyone cycles through to get from one end of the island to the other (you are given your personal bicycle on arrival with a little wooden tag engraved with your room number - small charming details!)
The facilities and activities are endless but also of the highest quality. We did yoga every morning which was taught by the gorgeous Pawan. My husband, who had never done yoga before, could do a head stand by the end! We will miss Pawan. The spa is of course world famous and lives up to its reputation. I had a truly fabulous oriental body massage as well as the first time experience of a traditional Ayurvedic body massage - I think this kick started our wholesome, feel good holiday off.
Although a small island, there are plenty of places to eat different cuisines and never get bored of the delicious food. Our favourite was 'Fresh in the Garden', also because the setting is magical and the structure of the tree house very special. On our last night we watched a golden oldie on the big screen, outside under the stars, popcorn, wine and incredibly comfortable sun loungers. I couldn't decide what I wanted to watch; the film or the stars and the (almost) full moon...
There are so many details I can rave about...the chocolate room (Ahhh), the scuba diving, all the incredibly friendly staff and lastly our very special trip to our own 'desert island'! Here they took us on a speed boat to a tiny little island with a hut for the loo (a very civilised and stylish one of course) and a hut for the shade where you can relax and/or eat. They provided us a 'picnic' which was more like a feast for for a king with grilled prawns, roasted vegetables, smoked salmon, salads, dressings, and more....chocolate brownies and a fruit platter as well as tea, coffee and cold drinks. Here we were left for the day with not another soul for miles...
We are already booked for next year and am secretly counting the days. Thank you Soneva Fushi for making our belated honeymoon worth the wait!

We spend four vacations (2 weeks each) on Soneva Fushi. It is a great place and wonderful to come back to. Weather is usually better in July, but we mostly come in October/November to fill up on sunshine for the European winter to come. But this year we were extrenely blessed and only had two days of monsoon rain.

Room Tip: Ask for "the side of the sandbank", the opposite side villas have a view to a less pretty...

This was my third visit to a Soneva resort and the experience just gets richer and richer. The term "paradise' is often overused but It's hard to imagine finding a more perfect setting with such wonderful food and friendly, helpful staff anywhere on the planet. They have perfected their brand of luxury but sustainable tourism, and it's comforting and refreshing to know that our time on the island has minimal negative environment consequences and that we are are actually contributing to a number of positive initiatives within the local communities around us.

There was a healthy programme of activities that kept even our two teenage daughters busy for 10 days without a minute wasted. One of the highlights was a free meditation/relaxation session that we were encouraged to take within the first few days. What a masterstroke. There can be no better way to shut out the concerns of everyday life in the real world and put us all quickly in the right mindset for a vacation. They should make this compulsory. For someone who has always had difficulty "switching off", I don't think I have ever felt so relaxed on holiday.

We spent a lot of time in the aptly named Six Senses Spa. As well the usual massages and anti-stress treatment, there was an intriguing spiritual vibe around it which aroused my curiosity and tempted me to explore new concepts and treatments that fall outside of my usual logical world. The result was as much calming and comforting as it was fascinating.

After a previous visit, I joked that the man with the most difficult job was the Food & Beverage manager with the task of actually improving the overall dining experience. Yet somehow they still managed to surpass our expectations again and again. The "By The Beach" restaurant is officially our favourite in the world. With feet in the sand and tables right on the waters edge, we're invited to enjoy a healthy choice of Japanese/Korean delights. The portions small enough to allow us to taste several dishes during one meal, and over several visits, we must have tried every dish on the menu and each and every mouthful was an absolute delight. Most Restaurants offers a cooking class where the chefs reveal their techniques and secrets ... and as a nice touch just before leaving the F&B Manager gave us the recipes of our favourite dishes to try out at home.

Once again, it was one amazing experience after another. It's difficult to imagine going to any other resort. The Sonava brand is so much more than a pretty island. It brings together all the elements needed for a perfect vacation: total relaxation and with a clear conscience.

Thank you for writing such a wonderful review of your stay at Soneva Fushi. We are so happy that you had such a great vacation experience at our resort.

We very much appreciate your comments on our eco friendly concept; we do get a lot of compliments from our guests on our initiatives to protect the environment. We are happy that you experienced the meditation session, and as you said it does help guests relax, switch off and enjoy their holiday.

Our culinary team could not be happier to learn that they surpassed your expectations over and over again. Nothing is too difficult for them; led by our Swiss Executive Chef and Faseeh our Food & Beverage Manager, they create the most innovative, mouth watering menus for our guests to enjoy. Our restaurants ‘By the Beach’ and ‘Fresh in the Garden’ serve the freshest food with the highest quality ingredients. We hope that the recipes and the cooking classes will help you turn out some mouth watering dishes back home – we’d love to hear about it!

Official Description (provided by the hotel):
When Eva and Sonu Shivdasani built Soneva Fushi as well as their home on the deserted island of Kunfunadhoo in the Maldives in 1995 they had no idea that their intensely personal vision of a locally crafted villa and environmentally responsible lifestyle would form the basis of a successful collection of world-class hotels, resorts and spas. But that's exactly what happened. Soneva Fushi was the first 'castaway' resort in the Maldives, pioneering a trend for back-to-nature luxury holidays. It established a blueprint for a highly acclaimed international business, followed by spectacular Soneva Kiri on the unspoilt Thai island of Koh Kood in 2009. The success of the Soneva brand also paved the way for Six Senses Resorts and Spas with award-winning properties in Asia, the Middle East and Europe. Under Eva's and Sonu's direction the Six Senses brand gained a global following before being sold in 2012. Today the Sonevas have many imitators, but no equals. Each Soneva - and a yachting experience, Soneva in Aqua - impresses on a wide range of levels. Breathtaking 'remote but accessible' natural locations, effortlessly chic accommodation, incredible food, truly memorable activities, an inspiring ethos of sustainability and service that is uncannily intuitive. The resort that set the tone and the standards for every subsequent resort. A jewel of an island - large by Maldives standards - with perfect beaches, a vibrant reef encircling the island, a colony of nesting turtles and its very own world class observatory. Located in the Baa Atoll, Maldives' only UNESCO World Biosphere Reserve, Soneva Fushi is blessed with extensive coral reefs and significant biodiversity including large concentrations of whale sharks, manta rays and marine turtles. The resort is perfect for romantic couple getaways, or family holidays as it provides unique experiences and activities for all, from diving and snorkelling with the marine biologist, to sandbank dinners and a children's den (playground). ... more   less
