“'Intellegent luxury’ at its best”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 11 May 2014

Soneva Fushi is ‘intellegent luxury’ at its best. We were there in early February and the villa was beautiful, just yards from the beach with an amazing outlook out to sea. The villa had everything we needed and when we were ever in need of anything our ‘Man Friday’ was available to help us out – even bringing some beach toys for our 2 year old daughter to play with. The breakfast was incredible – with a cheese room and a chocolate room and lots of incredible fruit. We really enjoyed the open air cinema, sunset cocktails on the sandbank and riding bikes through the cool sandy paths of the jungle. One of the most interesting things we did was a tour of the Eco Centre to see how Soneva is doing its part to be a truly eco-friendly and sustainable resort and encouraging us to do the same in our own little way. The resort is very family friendly and our daughter loved the 'den'. We would recommend Soneva to anyone and hope to visit again some day.

Dear Guest,

Thank you very much for taking the time to post such a wonderful review of your stay at Soneva Fushi. We are delighted to know that you and your daughter enjoyed all the Learning, Inspiring, Fun, Experiences (LIFE) that we had on offer including our cheese and chocolate room. We are glad you took time to visit our Eco Centre and see for yourself all the great initiatives taken to turn waste to wealth – and most of all it made us so happy to know that you were encouraged to do the same.

Thank you once again for your positive feedback and for recommending our resort to your friends and others.

We hope you will return with your daughter sometime soon, to check out the many interesting activities that we have planned for the children when our Children’s Den opens later this year.

Yours sincerely,

I have been to several resorts in Maldives, and this one is definitely my favourite. The villas comfortable, spacious but still cozy. I was highly impressed by how environmentally friends this resort is.
The service was splendid.

Dear Guest,

Thank you for your feedback from your stay in June 2013. We are happy to know that Soneva Fushi is your favourite resort in the Maldives and that you enjoyed the comfortable, spacious villa and the eco friendly atmosphere of the island.

We strive daily to reduce our carbon footprint and think of innovative and measurable ways of ‘decarbonizing’ and the latest initiative is our glass waste to wealth studio opening in November - here we will be turning waste glass from both ours and other resorts into beautiful works of art.

Once again delighted you enjoyed your vacation with us and look forward to welcoming you back soon.

Yours sincerely,

this was our fifth time at Maldives and .. i can tell the best ever! we've been there last week of march 2014 and I confirm that the place is fantastic:all you can expect from a very relaxing place..there it is! as all the beautiful things have already been said in other posts, just let me add that the "luxury" you can experience here is the Nature; its power and strength. this is not ideomatic, luxury is the way they let you experience and enjoy the nature. one of the thing I've better enjoied was the bike-riding in the middle of "the jungle" to go from one place to another and of course the privacy+ silence that here is guarantee.
their maxim is "no news no shoes" and this is true; if you want, you can really forget all the enforcements the society lay down us. but don't worry: for everything you may need/forget/desire, the resort put at your beck and call a personal helper (the so called "Mr. Fridays") that wellcome you in the boat trasfer and to whom you can/have to ask for everything: from the restaurant reservations-to the check out. Our Mr friday was Shameen,a young maldivian guy that also spoke a little Italian that was very sweet and professional all week long; I really wish you to be lucky enough to end up with him too ;) he realy makes the difference of our staying.
last 3 things to say:
1 children: we were there with our little child (9 months): if you want to enjoy the island at its best, better your child beeing older (or stay home) and not only because everything in the island is "romantic- oriented" but especially becasue in the resort, the "eco-philosophy" sometimes makes life harder than we are used to.. they really use candles better than electricity that means that in the evening (and there darkness comes fast!) is too dark for little children; the sand all over makes the stroller-walk nearly impossible..etec
2 hospital: in front of the island there's a "big" island - not turistic - (2000 inhabitants) with also an hospital. of course this is not what you have to think before going to maldives but if you are maybe 5 months pregnant and a little in anxiety.. the hospital right in fornt is always a good things to have ;) - do not forget that Malè is 1 hour flight away.

3- once there, do not miss the private sandbank dinner and bring your camera for fantastic memories.INDIMENTICABILE!

Dear Guest,

Thank you for taking the time to write such a comprehensive review about your recent stay at Soneva Fushi. My Team and I are so pleased to read that you had a very relaxing holiday and that this was your best trip ever.

We are glad that you recognize and appreciate the eco friendly lifestyle at Soneva Fushi - we call it ‘Intelligent Luxury’ which is about understanding the daily lives of our guests and offering them experiences that are both ‘new’ - in that they are rare, unusual and exceptional to our guests but at the same time 'true' - in that they are highly desired and cherished by our guests.

Soneva Fushi during the evening comes to life with all the low lighting candles and soft lighting around the restaurants and villas. Part of our de-carbonizing goals is to have fewer lights around the restaurants where candles play an important part.

We are delighted that your children had a great time and enjoyed our eco philosophy. This year Soneva Fushi builds a one of a kind Children’s Den which opens in late 2014. Our unique hosts such as our Marine Biologist, Waste to Wealth Manger, Environmentalists and Horticulturalists will be involved in the running of the Den creating new Learning, Inspiring, Fun Experiences for Children.

We look forward to seeing you again, hopefully in the not too distant future.

Yours sincerely,

Laurie Burr

How can we describe our Soneva experience after more than 200 enthusiastic reviews on this website?
Well, we can confirm after 11 visits, that all this reviews are true, and it may be hard, if not impossible, to find a destination that comes even near to Soneva Fushi.
There might be resorts with more „luxury“, there might be hotels, which may offer more „activities“, there might be more „stylish“ islands, but nothing compares to SF.
It’s the atmosphere of total relaxement, the outstanding service and friendliness of all hosts, the quality of food, the sand under your feet ... and so on, which creates this unique Soneva experience we are addicted to.

We have some additional remarks:

The owners of the island, Eva and Sonu, are very aware of the ecological impact of the resort. They do have – for example - their own waste management and solar power moduls on the island, which is quite singular at the Maldives. Global warming is a fact, nobody can ignore any more. 10 years ago we could walk around the island without getting feet wet, but now you have to wade through the sea in front of some villas due to the erosion - even at low tide. This demonstrates the importance of „thinking green“.

There is some concern among others and us about the building of this huge private residences on the island. It’s in fact done mostly very nicely, but there is fear, that owners and future guests at the „billionaires row“ will change the social balance and the mood of the resort („gentrification“). This is to be watched very carefully – especially from the owners and their management itself.

So, that’s it. And now we are going to plan our next visit ...

Dear Guest,

Thank you for your kind compliments which the team, Eva and I are always touched by.

You mention that other resorts might be more “luxury”, do you mean bling?

At Soneva one of our guiding principles is “Intelligent Luxury” by which we mean; Intelligent Luxury is about understanding what true luxury is for our guests today. The wealthy of today come from a different context to the wealthy of the past when some of the more traditional luxuries were established. For guests who live in a cramped and polluted concrete jungle it is a true luxury to eat a freshly picked salad, grown in our organic garden while breathing fresh air and enjoying a beautiful view. Such an experience is rare in the modern world and combined with the space, privacy and comfort of our villas and rooms and the intuitive service provided by our hosts, we create: Intelligent Luxury. It is about understanding the daily lives of our guests and offering them experiences that are both 'new' - in that they are rare, unusual and exceptional to our guests but at the same time 'true' - in that they are highly desired and cherished by our guests. A commodity that becomes rare, is truly intelligent luxury.

You are concerned not so much about the style or quality of our Residences but more the impact that the Residence Owners might have on the overall feeling of the Resort. Eva and I having sold Six Senses now spend about half the year on Soneva Fushi. So it is important that we continue to feel happy being on the island. We have been in fortunate position to have had considerable demand for our Residences and the time to choose as there is a limit to how much we can build in any particular year.

We also believe that the biggest challenge for any business is that there is a “sense of ownership” beyond the share holders of the business. That is why our employees are referred to as “Hosts”. “Hosts” is not an empty word, we have several policies and procedures that try and reinforce this and that lead to our “Hosts” being passionate about what they do and waking up each morning and looking forward to the day ahead.

Likewise we have been fortunate to have been blessed by a group of Residence Owners that are as passionate and supportive of Soneva Fushi and the “magic” that exists on the island, as Eva and I.

This strong sense of “belonging” and “ownership” that our Residence Owners have towards the island is a great benefit. They do and will continue to support and reinforce the philosophy and beliefs that make this resort such a unique place to be in.

Finally you touched upon the “Green” aspect of Soneva Fushi. Our goal at Soneva helped by our “intelligent luxury” philosophy is to combine “Luxury” “Sustainability” and “Wellness”.

These concepts might seem like opposites. But, I believe that we are able to achieve this goal (…….. if I explain this now, this response will become even longer than it already is….)

Currently our annual Diesel consumption is about 30% to 50% less than our competitors. It is our goal in the next 12 months to halve our current diesel consumption again. This is not difficult, the technology is there. “INSHALLAH” thanks to our current good fortune, we will be in a position to achieve this.

We must remember that our challenge to save human kind on earth and to be able to live on this planet is not to completely eliminate global warming gasses (CO2 and Methane) but to about halve it from current levels so that we move to below 350 million parts per million.

At Soneva we are just trying to demonstrate an example of how we might maintain our current lifestyles (no compromises!) and still leave the planet livable for our children.

Let me end by once more sending you the thanks and appreciation of the Soneva team, Eva and I.
Sonu

This review is late - very late, sorry. Stayed here for the third time last year. Our family of five - the third lightees being 9,12 and 13 - had just the time of our lives. Again. A few new things. The deserted island trip was one of the most memorable days of my life. An island all to ourselves. Enough food and drink for a week. If you can imagine true paradise, then this is it. The diving as usual was spectacular. Francesca and Fabio were, as ever, such a delight and make all the difference between a great holiday and an outstanding one. When you book it for nearly two weeks you do wonder if you might get a spot of island fever - when you're times up you can't bear to leave. It wasn't just the children who felt very sad as the seaplane lifted away. The food just gets better and better. The staff are flawless - not too much, not too little. We did loads of sailing with Chris who was simply awesome, especially with the children. If you want to see your teenage son trapezing across the water at 20 knots with a pro, this is the place. Thank Laurie, and again apologies for the delay in writing. J

Room Tip: Rooms 1 - 12; you won't regret it.

Dolphin trip is very romantic trip with sun setting behide hotel's island on the way back and lots of dolphins swin and jump showing

Dinner, we went to Nine, Restaurant by the beach and restaurant by garden all restaurant is nice but i like scenary of By the beach restaurant, it's so romantic for dinner on the beach under candle light. and the food at By garden restaurant is the best beef and lamb.....

Breakfast, it is so fascinating for seperate rooms for each food type salad/ cool cut & cheese/ bread & icecream and Chocolate, but unavoiding is same Breakfast Buffet everyday for 4 days give you a Bore and looking for something difference to eat on third and forth day.

Dear Guest,

Thank you very much for your feedback. I am delighted to hear that we created the perfect trip for you, although you were here just four days. I am glad that you found the time to do so many Learning, Inspiring, Fun experiences including dining in all our three restaurants, chocolate room, Ham & Cheese room and the Ice Cream Parlour.

Soneva Fushi has one of the largest breakfast offerings in the Maldives. However your point of eating the same food everyday although being the largest buffet around, is a very good point which I will discuss with my Executive Chef and F&B Director immediately.

I hope it won’t be too long before we see you again.

My sister and I travelled to Soneva Fushi and were both absolutely blown away from the moment we stepped into the Soneva lounge at the seaplane terminal. Warm friendly greeting, delicious fresh juice, a complimentary massage and they checked us in there and then. Before we knew it we arrived at Soneva and the team on the island were there to meet us. We had a lovely Mr Friday (Muhaimin) who was there whenever we needed him, discreet but helpful. The food is amazing - try every restaurant as all very different. The team in the restaurants were also so chatty and friendly, too many to mention! Breakfasts and lunches were out of this world - everything so fresh! Definitely make the most of the bikes to get around the island, one of our highlights of the holiday! Make sure you go to the Observatory - Adam was very knowledgeable. Do not miss the snorkelling as well - crystal clear waters with a rich marine life. The best holiday every. Thank you Laurie and the team!

Throughout your review you highlighted the great work of our hosts who go to extreme lengths to create new Learning, Inspiring, Fun experiences and activities so that guests take back fond memories of Soneva Fushi - I am proud to work alongside such passionate and hardworking hosts.

Getting around the island on your bicycle or on foot is in itself an experience, where you get to enjoy the natural, eco friendly scenic beauty of the island, breathing in fresh air through the jungle.

We are glad you took time to visit our observatory which has one of the most powerful telescopes in the Maldives where you can view shimmering constellations while our Astronomer explains the stars.

Official Description (provided by the hotel):
When Eva and Sonu Shivdasani built Soneva Fushi as well as their home on the deserted island of Kunfunadhoo in the Maldives in 1995 they had no idea that their intensely personal vision of a locally crafted villa and environmentally responsible lifestyle would form the basis of a successful collection of world-class hotels, resorts and spas. But that's exactly what happened. Soneva Fushi was the first 'castaway' resort in the Maldives, pioneering a trend for back-to-nature luxury holidays. It established a blueprint for a highly acclaimed international business, followed by spectacular Soneva Kiri on the unspoilt Thai island of Koh Kood in 2009. The success of the Soneva brand also paved the way for Six Senses Resorts and Spas with award-winning properties in Asia, the Middle East and Europe. Under Eva's and Sonu's direction the Six Senses brand gained a global following before being sold in 2012. Today the Sonevas have many imitators, but no equals. Each Soneva - and a yachting experience, Soneva in Aqua - impresses on a wide range of levels. Breathtaking 'remote but accessible' natural locations, effortlessly chic accommodation, incredible food, truly memorable activities, an inspiring ethos of sustainability and service that is uncannily intuitive. The resort that set the tone and the standards for every subsequent resort. A jewel of an island - large by Maldives standards - with perfect beaches, a vibrant reef encircling the island, a colony of nesting turtles and its very own world class observatory. Located in the Baa Atoll, Maldives' only UNESCO World Biosphere Reserve, Soneva Fushi is blessed with extensive coral reefs and significant biodiversity including large concentrations of whale sharks, manta rays and marine turtles. The resort is perfect for romantic couple getaways, or family holidays as it provides unique experiences and activities for all, from diving and snorkelling with the marine biologist, to sandbank dinners and a children's den (playground). ... more   less
