“Thin walls, but excellent stay and value for OC hotel w/free parking, internet, and breakfast.”
Reviewed 9 July 2010

Visiting friends at UC Irvine, we selected this hotel nearby. Our second floor room had a spacious king bed and since it is a new (open <1 year) hotel, everything in the rooms and its facilities is spic and span clean. We opted to use the stairs more often than the elevator since it was faster--the stair hallways have that new plaster smell that I imagine will fade as time passes.

Overall, it was an excellent value and we found the location great for us--not too far from the beaches and coast, easy to get to Highway 5 to head to LA or San Diego, and there are a few large shopping complexes with restaurants nearby.

Housekeeping always did a good job. Initially there was no remote for the TV and we couldn't open the TV manually so called the front desk and we received a remote soon after.

Only minor issue: the thin walls, esp. if the people in the next room speak loudly. One morning we could listen in on their conversation as if they were in the same room. The rest of the time we didn't have any other issues.

Good: free parking, internet, and breakfast -for Orange County, finding a hotel with free parking is rare. Yes, the location near business complexes and not the beaches lends itself to free parking, but most other OC hotels charge for parking even if they're nowhere near major attractions.

As we stayed on a holiday weekend (July 4th), many children and large families were there on the first few days. Get to breakfast early or it will be hard to get some food. The staff did their best to always replenish everything from food to the condiments such as syrup, peanut butter, marmalade, etc.

On Tuesday morning, most people already checked out and the breakfast room was a calmer experience.

The internet access was very good.

The pool is a tad small, but it's indoors and probably heated. Saw kids using it. We used the gym-max of 10 people it said, but we were always the only ones there. They have two professional gym quality treadmills, two ellipticals, one cycling machine, one balance ball, and a lot of free weights and a weight bench press/chair.

Highly recommend this hotel for its value and what it offers; might reconsider another place if it's a popular holiday weekend and tons of kids with parents in tow (that's the way it looks rather than parents keeping their kids in check) heading to Disneyland are staying here. It will probably have lots of business people during the week and tourists on the weekends with their nightly rates.

My review of this hotel involves several swings of good or needs improvement. The good, its an excellent location for an Anaheim baseball game or Knotts or Disney. You hop on the 55 and it brings you right to I-5. The hotel was immaculate, being a new hotel plays a part in that. The breakfast was OUTSTANDING as far as these set-ups go, the scrambled eggs were always fresh and fluffy with good sausage patties, make your own waffles and heaps of walnuts. The coffee was always on and excellent and the breakfast bar was constantly being stocked and cleaned. It was a 14 mile ride to Newport Beach which was beautiful.
Now the negatives. The walls hold NO sound. We heard people walking, sneezing, talking, flushing, on all sides and over us. They seemed to have skimped on insulation. The suite, which was supposed to be 2 rooms with a partition, was really a room and a quarter, with a small board seperation. When you pulled out the sofa bed, it went up against the computer desk, leaving no room to walk to it. The bathrooms have no locks, ( it may be because our room was also handicap accessible, not sure), and the seperate toilet and shower was inconvenient. Thats like having dinner and asked to have dessert in another room. The maid service was strange. On one day the maid uses her key at 4pm to gain access to my room. She didnt see me on the far bed, but when she did, she unexplainably started making the other bed, which was already made. I was suspicious what would have happened if i wasnt there. The second day, we were gone all day, when we got back, around 5pm, the maid again opened our door, saw me and quickly exited. We bolted out the door and met the supervisor, and she immediately began paging the maids to find out who and why they'd go in our room. They all shook their heads and said "not me!" Keep in mind there is no 'turn down' service here.
I must say the Manager was extremely professional and helpful when we spoke to her. But you know, I still liked the place. Id recommend getting a high floor end room and lock up your valuables. I give it 4 stars because im a sucker for new facilities.

On the plus side: 1. It's very convenient to the John Wayne Airport. 2. It's a modern structure that is supposed to be environmentally friendly. 3. It's a good value.
On the minus side: We had multiple problems.
1. On arrival, the parking lot at the front of the hotel was largely roped off limits, so we had to find a back entrance to the parking lot. There was not a sign to guide the guests to where they are supposed to detour. Only signs that said "If you park here you WILL BE TOWED". Talk about anti-hospitality. We did not feel welcomed even before we set foot in the hotel.
2. On check-in, the front desk staff person (he was the only one at the time) reminded us rather curtly that we could not park in the roped off area. When questioned, he did not provide an apology for this inconvenience or a satisfactory answer. I mean, come on, this is a Marriott Hotel. The front entrance is blocked off with no explanation, except for a sign that says "YOU WILL BE TOWED!". What kind of hotel hospitality is that??
3. I asked the same front desk person the simple question of how to get from the hotel to the John Wayne Airport. I had to ask 3 times before he understood my question.
4. Although advertised as a studio suite, the room was a bit small for a "suite". In my mind, putting a sofa in a standard-sized hotel room and separating it from the main bed with a flimsy partition doesn't make it into a suite.
5. The suite was not exactly child-proof. We had two toddlers. I had to move a ceramic decorative vase from the floor to above the desk to avoid potential problem. There were also a lot of protruded corners on various furniture in the room.
6. It's really close to the airport, but not so close to anything else in terms of food or shopping. It's really only good for business travelers who needs to be close to the airport. I wouldn't recommend it for family vacationers.
7. We slept poorly because the sound insulation was rather poor. Heard a lot of conversational noise and door banging down the hall well past 11pm.

I stayed here on a Friday night before flying out of Orange County the next morning. The hotel appears to be brand new and is designed and decorated in the new SpringHill style, which I like very much: separate rooms for toilet/sink and vanity/shower, half of a divider wall between the living/work area and the beds. My room was in a corner, so the layout may have been a little irregular; it had a separate wardrobe instead of a built-in closet.

My only complaint about the room itself is that the ventilation system was loud. This may not be an issue with rooms not on the top floor, and at any rate, it wasn't loud enough to keep me awake.

Breakfast was another story. I arrived about half an hour before it ended, and it looked like locusts had descended: one or two lonely pieces of bread left on the platter, no yogurt, no hot food, not even any cups for juice! I had to ask a staffer for cups, and he returned with only about a dozen even though there were still quite a few people in the area waiting for them. When I asked another person for more danish, she looked very put out. Eventually, another staffer came out with a small tray with maybe 8 items on it--again, with lots of people waiting for food.

When I checked out, I mentioned that I found the breakfast to be an issue due to the lack of food and the staff's approach to re-stocking. The manager made excuses about the staff being overwhelmed by the large number of children staying at the hotel and eating the breakfast. He said the staff couldn't keep up, and I pointed out that they didn't seem to be trying, carrying out only a few items at a time and not re-stocking items unless asked. Rather than taking the criticism constructively, he continued to offer excuses.

If you advertise breakfast until a certain hour, then you need to offer a full selection until that time. And the staff needs to bring out more than a few items at a time when there's clearly still a high demand for food. Instead of carrying one small tray at a time, they should have been bringing out 2-3 full trays at a time. Re-stocking so begrudgingly and slowly gives the impression that the hotel management wants to save money on the breakfast by "waiting out" the customers until the breakfast hours are over.

One other annoyance: The lobby computers (I guess this was the "business center") were monopolized by kids the whole morning, so I couldn't print out my boarding pass. The hotel staff should do a better job of making sure that the computers are available to all guests, particularly those with legitimate business needs.

That aside, the hotel is comfortable, clean, and well-located. If the management can get its act together regarding breakfast, it will be a very pleasant place to stay.

Very modern so not usually to our taste, but loved that it was so new, clean, quiet and beautiful linens and very comfortable beds. There was absolutely no noise and so got a great rest. It is so close to everything and great friendly service too.

We stayed here for two nights and found the rooms to be well designed and comfortable. We liked that there was a shower and sink in a seperate area from the commode and sink. The bed was very comfortable with great linens and everything in the room was very clean. The only issue was the hotel was very crowded during the breakfast hours and there wasn't enough food to go around. The staff was overwhelmed with all the guests and people were just waiting in line for either food, cups, utensils, etc.. Hopefully it normally isn't like that. The second day we didn't bother with breakfast because of this since crowds were waiting just like the day before. Seems like the hotel would be able to anticipate a large crowd and be ready with additional food items. Otherwise, it was a great place to stay!
