I accidentally stumbled upon this place during a bike ride. What a lovely oasis of marsh life! The first time I went I saw a huge bird eating a fish near the waters edge. He was beautiful. The second time I got up close to an egret and watched him nonchalantly catching small fish for his breakfast. This place is a real gem and easily accessible to anyone who lives here in Irvine or beyond. Really great access to lots of bird life and they are not as skittish around people.

The San Joaquin Wildlife Sanctuary is undoubtedly a hidden gem of Irvine. Located near the UCI campus, this sanctuary offers a peaceful walk through a natural habitat that is well preserved. There are marshes and flower gardens, all of which house an abundant amount of wildlife.

I would definitely go again if I could, and I would recommend this sanctuary to photographers, wildlife enthusiasts, and anyone visiting Irvine.

San Joaquin offers birders a great opportunity to walk and bird. There are an abundance of water fowl and more habitats than you would suspect. The trail maps could be improved; but, it would be hard to get lost. I would not take small children. They do post signs of occasional mountain lions.

This is a quiet, hidden little walking sanctuary not far from John Wayne Airport. There are several miles of winding trails with lots of different vegetation, trees, flowers, and foliage, depending on time of year. At times, it can be a bird-watchers paradise. There are handy color-coded trail maps making it hard to get lost. Also a cute little museum/nature center on site and a butterfly garden.
