“Beautiful time in the Fields”

We took our grandsons, 2 1/2 and 5, to Tanaka Farms. We rode in a wagon/trailer pulled by a tractor into the vegetable fields. We loved it and the kids loved it. They stopped at the different fields of kale, tomatoes, green beans and lettuce. All of it beautiful. We passed fields of pumpkins and watermelons. It is what Southern California looked like 50-60 years ago. The tomatoes were gorgeous and different sizes to pick. Also, we picked some peppers back at the main vegetable stand. Everything was reasonably priced and the best quality. The little boys enjoyed the tractor ride and getting out in the field. Their shoes got a little muddy but that is part of the experience.

When was the last time you visited a working farm? The Tanaka Farms in Irvine is a great place to take the family to see, touch and taste everyday fruits and vegetables. Daily tractor pulled wagon tours are available with opportunities to actually taste or pick your own fruits such as strawberries and watermelons or your favorite vegetables like corn, green beans or carrots (seasonal - small fees for picking). Great for the young and old alike. My mother-in-law had such a good time picking strawberries. She was like a kid again. The farm has a stand open daily to purchase any of your favorite fruits or vegetables. They can also set you up with periodic box (CSA) sent to you or held at a pick up location close to your residence. The farm is very active with the community and hosts many events to support local charities as well as farms in Japan destroyed by the tsunami - check their website for upcoming events/activities. You can't beat the taste of freshness. Don't forget to try the yellow watermelon.

This week only (first week of July) free wagon rides at 10:00 am into the fields to pick the sweetest corn, green beans, gigantic onions, strawberries to be picked and eaten in the field, and tomatoes--heirloom brandy wine, Roma's and cherry tomatoes. The heirloom weigh at least 1 lb each. Young children love going into the field and getting their own fruit and vegetables. A fun treat for anyone.
