“No cell phone service, no wifi, no restaurant”
Reviewed 27 October 2011

This place is great if you do NOT want to be connected. There is no cell phone service, no wifi and no restaurant on site. We rented the king room with a fireplace, grill and private hot tub on the patio. The room was rather sparse, but it did have a small fridge and a microwave. They did have satellite tv and HBO. If you want a peaceful, undisturbed get-away, this would be fine, but it's not luxurious in any way. And it's a bit pricey for what you get. It did have a nice view of the ocean from the patio.

Room Tip: Get an ocean view room

We are sorry to learn that you recently rated our lodge poorly, not because you were unhappy with your stay, but the were unhappy with the remoteness of it's location and area services. As you noticed on your travels to us, we are very remote and you are correct, there is currently NO cell service, (although we hear that they are working on a tower near our area.) There is also NO DSL either, and they are working on bringing this to us as well. There is a restaurant one mile north of our lodge and we do have a store and deli across the street. Hence the reason we have included the BBQ, microwave and small refridgerator in all of our rooms. We hope that you might visit us again, when you do not have to have all the electronic connections that life is offering. We look forward to providing a relaxing environment for you.

The rooms were clean and the bed was very comfortable. There were some nice extras like a barbeque on the patio, a microwave and a refridgerator. The TV wasn't too good. It had Direct TV with too many infomercials. The outside was beautifully landscaped and there was a nice view of the ocean.

We stayed on "The Hill". This is adults only, no groups. It's supposed to be the quiet area. It was very quiet. We were in room 19, king bed, refrigerator, microwave, bar sink.
We agree with the previous reviews that spoke of the "rustic" feel of the place. While a fancy upgrade of the rooms would be nice, there is a sense of stepping into your family cabin.
Our hot tub was on the patio and was set at 105 degrees. This meant that we either had to sit on the edge until the water temp came down a bit or leave the cover off until we could stand to get in. We couldn't access the temperature controls.
Someone spoke of hot water problems in the shower and we encountered the same problem on one early morning shower. We think someone else was using their shower at the same time. Showers later in the morning didn't have the problem at all.
Coming prepared is a must here as there are no stores open in the area later in the day. Ocean Cove store up the road in Salt Point may stay open later than the Ft. Ross store across from the Lodge, but not much later.
We did try restaurant Alexander's up the road at the Timbercove Inn for breakfast. Service there is slow and the prices are a bit high ($3 for a side of toast) but the food is well prepared and tasty.
We are letterboxers and there are about 10 of them in the general vicinity. Hiking into Stillwater Cove Park for the series of letterboxes there was a very nice way to soak in the beauty of the redwoods and creeks that run into the Pacific.

We stayed at the Fort Ross Lodge for Labor Day weekend. I wanted a location right on the coast so that we could have a real weekend getaway. I also wanted something reasonably priced. Here are the highlights:

Location: With the few cottage choices in Jenner, more choices further south in Bodega Bay, and more expensive choices north in Timber Cove, Sea Ranch and Gualala, this seemed like the right spot. Especially since there is a store right across from the lodge. There really are no places to get food or gas along the way!

Management/Check-in:The office is open until 9pm, so check-in was no problem for us. If we arrived after 9pm, the management assured us that they would leave a key for you. There are only around 25 units in the whole place, so the management is very friendly. The sign says under new management. Laura and Matt are very nice and gave us a bottle of sparkling wine at check-in. They told us to let them know if there was anything we needed. That was pretty much the last I saw of them.

Room: We stayed in room 19 on "the hill", which is across the street and north about 100 yards from the main property. There are 6 units on the hill, 2 are ground level, with 2 units above. then there are 2 other units off to the side that are ground level, and are more like larger suites. The parking up there was kind of tight, with room for 6 cars but not if people aren't polite and park close to the edges of the paved area.

Our room was kind of musty smelling, and done in the style of what i would best describe as "grandma's basement". It seemed like it had newish carpet, and some newer additions in the bathroom, but overall it was pretty aged. The decor itself was nothing but a few framed duck pictures throughout. The linens were not hotel standard white, but from Kohl's (our towels were purplish/gray colored and branded Apt. 9) and the sheets were some crazy floral pattern from the 80s or 90s. I haven't been to a place like a "lodge" or B&B before, so maybe this is standard for the type of property this is. But there is just something comforting about crisp white linens and sheets. Like you know they can wash it with stronger detergents and high heat and that it is just cleaner somehow. There were no issues and I'm not saying the sheets/linens weren't clean, but that is just not the impression you get. They do give you additional towels for the hot tub, but there is nothing for a shower mat, which is needed on the slippery tile floors of the bathroom, with the bathtub up a step. The bathroom had a hairdryer, showercap, soap, shampoo, lotion, extra TP and tissues. Very no-frills in there.

We had a king sized bed in our room, with only 2 pillows. There were extra "decorative" pillows in shams, but I wouldn't use that to sleep with. There was a dresser with extra pillow and blanket, DirectTV receiver and DVD player. The TV was old, so don't come thinking you'll have a flatscreen HD TV. There are no phones in the room, so if you do need something, you'd have to get in the car and drive down and over Rt. 1 to go to the office. There is also ZERO cell service/internet service. This is great because it forces you to disconnect, but not great if you were planning on streaming music or watching hulu while you veg out in the hot tub. We had a private hot tub on our patio, but I think other units had the hot tubs inside their rooms, but this room was great because we sat in the hot tub with an unobstructed view of the ocean. Is there anything better than that? Plus, the hot tub was very clean and was already up to temperature when we arrived.

There is also a kitchenette with a microwave and a minifridge. It is really a minifridge....not the waist high size, but the slightly bigger than a microwave size. I would recommend that they get larger fridges for the rooms, especially since the rooms have weber grills which encourage you to make your own meals. The room comes equipped with 2 drinking glasses, 2 wine glasses, an ice bucket, cheese board and knife, wine opener, 2 cup coffee pot (with coffee, sugar, tea, powdered creamer) and utensils for the grill. There are no plates, utensils, salt/pepper, serving dishes or anything, so be sure to bring that if you are going to cook, and also some dishwashing soap and papertowels. They also provide you with charcoal for the weber grill and one stack of firewood and fire-starter for the in room fireplace. The fireplace is the raised metal kind with the long tube chimney.

The last thing I will say about the room is that it was "campy". By this I mean, there were some spiders in our shower and in the corners (much like you find in campsites) and the shower itself was not great. The pressure wasn't great, the temperature, which starts out fine, changes quickly to FREEZING cold, to SCALDING hot based on what the other units are doing with their water. At one point I had to turn off the shower all together and let the hot water recover while I stood there with shampoo in my hair. Don't plan to take a bath here because it will be lukewarm at best!

If you are not looking for a 5-star hotel accommodation, truly want to get away, and don't mind being a little "campy", then this place is definitely worth a try!

Room Tip: No kids are allowed on "the hill".

Very clean spacious room. We stayed in room number 7, queen with full view. We BBQ on the patio for dinner. There is a small refrigirator and microwave in the room. No utensils or plates. Plan your meal ahead of time. You are very isolated here with no real market around for miles. That is a good thing. We enjoyed walking around Stillwater Cove, Salt Point, and the bluff right in front of our room. We ate lunch on the rebound at River's End in Jenner. Selections are easier on the wallet then.

This is a nice place, but we would have enjoyed it more if had realized some things about it.
First, it is somewhat isolated. The room includes a nice patio with a grill, wine glasses, corkscrew and even a little cutting board for cheese/fruit. But the only store nearby closed at 6 p.m. and by the time we arrived about 7 p.m. we had no place to purchase anything to cook or even some snacks and a bottle of wine. The only nearby restaurant, Alexanders, was our sole option, and it was expensive and just OK.
Plan ahead if you want to really enjoy this lodge. Or, for more options, stay in Gualala or Point Arena.

Room Tip: Bring your own food and wine or arrive before the store closes.

This was our 4th trip to the Fort Ross Lodge and once again had a wonderful time. As soon as we arrived we hiked out to the coastal overlook to breathe in the ocean.....then a lounge in the hot tub and sauna , folowed by a salmon dinner we cooked on the provided barbecue and ate in the comfort of our room, overlooking the ocean.

The next day we enjoyed hiking for hours at Salt Point!..
The Fort Ross Lodge is absolutely fabulous in every way.... ..wild flowers galore, views of the coast, hiking trails, complete cooking facilities,, beautiful rooms, hot tub and sauna....

who could ask for anything more?
