Description: The epicenter of Sonoma Coast dining...the River's End is located in the quaint village of Jenner by the Sea about 20 minutes north of Bodega Bay. The restaurant is set on a bluff overlooking the Russian River spill into the Pacific Ocean. During lunch you can watch the Osprey dive in the river for fish or the harbor seals frolic at riverside. Dinner time is all about the sunset - the show is worth the visit. Fortunately, the restaurant chefs and service staff aim to outdo the natural surroundings. The kitchen prepares California cuisine with a focus on local ingredients. Chef Martin Recoder prepares menus that are changing with the seasons and delight the heart. The service staff is led by Maitre d'/Owner Bert Rangel, who has owned and managed the restaurant for over 10 years. The Chef in the Redwood Bar is talented Patrick Keane. Trained at the French Culinary Institute, Patrick utilizes the freshest ingredients and classic techniques to create truly "Artisanal Cocktails".

The River's End Restaurant is located directly on the ocean with a spectacular sunset view if you get there around 6pm. We had our anniversary meal there and were not disappointed. I had one of the best seafood pastas I have had anywhere. Wonderful prawns in a light truffle cream sauce over perfectly cooked fresh pasta was absolutely delicious. We are from Napa and are no stranger to fine food, but this meal stacked up against the best food at home. Considering the location, they could have gotten away with lesser food and still charged high prices, but I commend them for keeping up the high standards I remember form 15 years ago when we were last there. It was a Tues. and the place was packed by 6pm., so be sure to make a reservation in advance. We had to travel down the windy coast road for 30 minutes to get there from our hotel, but it was well worth it!

We used an on-line reservation service to reserve our Sunday at 12:30pm lunch table for a dual celebration for two couples: anniversary and birthday. This was our second visit to the River's End restaurant and it exceeded our expectations in almost every category. Parking is limited and a little precarious. It might be advisable to drop your guests near the front door and then park.

We were greeted by a very charming hostess. She had a big and welcoming smile and was knowledgeable of our reservations and our special occasions. There was no wait since this restaurant only seats with an advance reservation. We asked for a corner table so that our guests could look out over the Pacific and the termination of the Russian River. Both are in clear view from the North-West-most corner table for four surrounded by windows on two sides and windows above... a perfect view.

Hot bread and butter was placed on the table within three minutes of our seating. The menus were quickly provided and we were not rushed with our selections. We asked the waiter several questions and he knew the answers with impressive and convincing detail. To start we ordered the Clam Chowder. This is a house specialty. All we could do after each spoonful was to lean back in our chairs and say "wow"! The recipe for this chowder was most unique - smooth and creamy with hints of dill and tarragon. We know this to be factual because we asked the waiter to check with the chef to give us some validation of our guesses. The soup was just outstanding.

We ordered a variety of entrées and three different wines by the glass. The service was outstanding and the food was delivered at a pace that perfectly matched the slow rate of our conversation and consumption. We had the Fish & Chips, and the Vegetarian Napoleon plates. Both were also outstanding. The fish & chips, we learned, was prepared from locally caught fish and prepared with a light but very tasty batter deep-fried to a perfect golden brown. The vegetarian plate was layered vegetables on top of a thin slice of tofu. The food on each of our plates was artistically displayed and the pairing of the sides was complementary but not overriding the taste of the primary entrées.

We were so satisfied from our meal that we did not have room for dessert. But next time I'll be sure to order a glass of the ice wine that is proudly one of the items on the desert wine list.

This is a dining and day-time visual experience not to be missed. Although expensive it's well-worth the drive and the price.

We went for dinner, but we arrived early to enjoy the sunset, it was quite spectacular. We had a glass of wine and then we sat at our table. We had oysters, very fresh and tasty, and then tuna and sea bass as main. Everything was very good, service was friendly and polite. Overall it is not a cheap place but the food is worth the cost!

A local recommended this restaurant. With great anticipation we drove 45 minutes as our destination. The restaurant seating is small and cramped. They promote fine dining, with table cloths and napkins, but cover it with brown paper. They seat everyone with the best possible view, which is spectacular, but we had to look past people chewing and talking and sipping their wine. We could hear conversations we wished we didn't. Okay so the food was okay, we have had better. Shared the Poke Ahi Tuna appetizer and I had the Fish and Chips with homemade cucumber salad. The best thing was the cucumber salad. The fish was hot when it came out but crust quickly became soggy. House made remoulade was good, housemade catsup was sweet. Husband had the burger. Onion straws were tasty, I tried a bite of burger meat and it was good quality. Service was lack luster. We were seated without a menu. No one came to our table so I went to hostess stand to get a menu, and I was told someone would come. Waited and waited and just as we were going to leave waitress came. Her demeanor was really bad. She was on the edge of condescending mixed with politeness. Odd in a bad way. Sourdough bread was good, had to ask for water and soda refills. $$-$$$ prices. The view is worth the drive but not the restaurant, sorry!

We recently took a trip to Sonoma Valley, California. Wanting to see some redwoods, we decided on a road trip to the coast. Once we reached our destination we fell upon the town of Jenner with it's small but fantastic restaurant, River's End (they also had lodging in beautiful, water's edge condos). Had a fabulous salmon chowder and elegant beet salad...both delicious! Others are our table said they really enjoyed their meals as well. It was extremely windy that day, so we opted not to sit on the deck, but the views of the mouth of the Russian River and ocean were spectacular even from inside. What a great and unexpected find!!
