The perfect mountain retreat - completely quiet, completely self-contained, stunning views and every homey comfort provided. We would gladly buy it and live there full time if we could...so glad we can at least "borrow it" now and then. I love everything about this place..sunny porch for reading, meticulous kitchen with quirky dishes, beautiful aged wood floors, wonderful textiles everywhere, two completely separate bedrooms/baths providing plenty of space for two couples or a family, intriguing artwork with international flair, books and music so good that we never opened our own, and the peace... Always the peace.
Two nights of pure delight and we will be back again and again. We have found our spot in the mountains! Thanks so much to Nan and Chuck - the cabins reflect you.

My husband I just returned from the most relaxing weekend at Big Cat Cabin. Chuck met us upon our arrival and provided a very cordial, informative overview of the cabin and the surrounding area. It was great to hear about the history of the cabin and all of the special touches Chuck and his wife have added over the years! The cabin was delightful, beautifully crafted, airy, clean, charming with its antiques, and had amazing views from every window! There was a sense of privacy and solitude that made for a very peaceful and pleasant experience. We will be back!

We, a couple of good friends in need of some serious relaxation, made our way to Big Cat Cabin. The place was (is) too beautiful for words...and the smells of pine, and cedar that infuse the cabin...oh my! The cabin is tastefully decorated with many antiques and fine art photography that will please the eye. Just outside, many of the woodland wildlife (notably the deer and turkeys) are at ease and provide a stunning background to the hilly, wooded property. There were no TVs or WIFI service to distract us, so we just relaxed and focused on getting some quality rest. The place is truly a sanctuary! Thanks to Nan and Chuck for providing us visitors with such a great place to stay!!

Room Tip: There are great views from all the rooms:)

I had followed with great interest the story of Chuck and Nan after the original Artist's Loft had burned (and their home) during the Julian fires. After they rebuilt I booked the Artist's Loft to celebrate my husband's birthday 2 years ago, and the place was fabulous. Because we had such a great time we booked it again this past summer as well and invited a couple to go with us and we rented the entire house which includes the 2nd bedroom and 2nd full bath. It is pricey to rent the entire house, but the atmosphere is just perfect. The full service kitchen and large dining table allows for the perfect place to cook nice dinners and enjoy a nice home-cooked breakfast. You won't get a lot of extras as far as drinks and food here for the "breakfast" portion of the stay, so plan on bringing your own breakfast food, drinks, etc. The baths in both bathrooms are fabulous - especially the master bedroom/bath. The tub is a jetted tub and it's wonderful to sit in there with a nice glass of wine. The 2nd tub in the 2nd bedroom (if rented extra) is also really nice and very large/square almost, and will accommodate 2 people easily with a really nice bubble jet. No TVs so be prepared to entertain yourselves in the evening - great music selections provided with their stereo which we enjoyed and you can open up the living room doors to the outside covered patio and relax on the patio while enjoying the view and music and the great strands of lights in the loft area. Would be nice to have a larger, more comfortable outside table/lounge chairs to enjoy the beautiful evening views/with wine and appetizers. Overall - an outstanding place away from the town that offers a very unique environment and breathtaking views and breezes. I really commend Chuck and Nan for their design of this lovely home - all the unique windows and features make for perfect mountain nights!

Room Tip: If you have friends/children that you'd like to bring along, it's worth it to rent the 2nd b...

We have now stayed in all three cabins that Nan and Chuck operate, they are all unique, well maintained, enriching and we can't wait to return. This recent visit we stayed in Big Cat Cabin, it has all the charm of an old mountain cabin with updated features like great sound system, fresh bread waiting, well stocked kitchen (with fiestaware), games to play if you are inclined, with charm and warmth in every corner. The wildlife right outside the window is a great compliment to the peace of this mountain experience. If you visit one of these cabins you will discover a hidden gem in the mountains above Julian that will be irresistible to return to again and again...check it out and enjoy the experience, you will not be disappointed.

Room Tip: All three cabins are unique and wonderful

We stayed at Big Cat Cabin in December and loved every moment!. On arrival as we parked the car a family of deer were peacefully watching us. Later wild turkeys flocked to the trees near the cabin for the night. We could hear them flapping their wings to fly straight up to a branch. I had no idea turkeys did that! The cabin is wonderful! Comfortable, beautiful, with many details lovingly added. Lovely music playing when we arrived. There is a great selection of CD's to chose from. Every window has an amazing view of the forest, the mountains, and beyond. There are so many windows!! Chuck & Nan have thought of everything to make your visit perfect in every way. The comfy chairs and window seat (perfect for gazing out the window or reading), the back porch is the perfect place to watch the sunset with a glass of wine. The bedroom has a corner desk and love seat and a wonderfully comfortable bed. The kitchen has everything you need to prepare meals with delicious fresh locally made bread, eggs, butter and coffee beans for breakfast on your own. Lots of games and interesting books. Hiking along the ridge was easy and fun. We just loved this cabin and hope to come back soon!

Room Tip: We were able to see the Artist's Loft and Strawberry Hill cabins. We found the Big Cat Cabin pe...

We just returned from the Strawberry Hill Cabin, everything was prefect right from the start. Music playing when you enter the cabin, great selection of cd's to enjoy, loaf of fresh local Julian bread for morning breakfast. The refrigerator is stocked with eggs, cream, butter, jam and there are fresh coffee beans with grinder! Perfect in every way. The kitchen is very well stocked if you care to cook (we did not) including spices and large assortment or utensils. This cabin is one of the most peaceful we have ever stayed in and the view is stupendous - it is a totally relaxing getaway, complete with deer and wild turkeys out the window. The town of Julian is about 10 minutes down the road and there are some good restaurants there. We visited the Candied Apple Bakery (which is where the bread came from that was waiting in the cabin) and had lunch there a few times and bought more bread. Chuck and Nan are warm and welcoming hosts and they have thought of every detail to make your experience magical. We viewed the other two cabins on the property and they are equally wonderful. We are already trying to figure out when we can return, you will not be disappointed if you give this cabin in the woods a visit.
