“Enjoyable family stay”
Reviewed 15 October 2013

We stayed at this cute B&B Sunday night after a busy Sunday in the streets full of bikers, visitors, locals, kids, ...you name it. Side note: plan ahead for your lunch since the shortest given wait time was 40 minutes on a Sunday.
Back to the B&B. We were let know that we could check in before 3 since it was ready. As other reviewers said the rooms are small, but immaculate, lovely furnished with antiques and quilts. Each corner something well put together. We took #7 (the Nimitz room) which is on the northwest corner, so had two windows combined with #6 for my mother and my sister. Comfortable beds, small bathrooms but adequate enough. Free WiFi. There is AC/heater, but the weather was great so just kept the windows opened. No TV on the room, loved it.

At check in we were let know that at 5pm they serve tea. Pleasant surprise to walk into the smell of freshly baked scones. They also served a cute combination of muffins, cookies (loved Dudley's raspberry cream filled cookies) and biscotti's. Hot and cold tea, cider and hot coffee. Played games and socialized with other guests. They close the parlor at 9PM but we left before that for a great flaming cider drink at the Julian Grill (cinnamon whisky with apple cider).

Breakfast was served in the parlor from 8-9AM. Had the famous granola (of which we purchased bags upon check out), OJ plus eggs Florentine, fresh fruit, yogurt, and some toasted Dudley's Bakery bread. Tables for four, which were not offered for sharing, so we had to wait but not much and the greeter was very nice and friendly.

All in all it was a very pleasant stay at this historic B&B, and we plan to return.

Room Tip: Room 6 and 7 in the second floor are really good for a family where 7 is a bit bigger than 6.

My husband and I came up to get away from all the hustle and bustle in LA and this was the perfect place to stay! We stayed upstairs and it felt like you stepped back in time! What an awesome place. We had a great night sleep after a long day of walking around the town and visiting the local wineries. The had an afternoon time which was perfect to break up the day and the next morning we had a wonderful breakfast in the dining room. The staff was very helpful and very freindly. I hope we can steal a week end again and stay at the Julian Gold Rush Hotel again.

Room Tip: We chose a back room becuase we did not want to have to listen to the cars on the main street...thou...

There's always something about staying at a place that has real history. This is a bed and breakfast, not a regular "hotel" as the title of the place says. Each room is decorated differently and each adorable, cute, unique. The rooms are for resting & sleeping, because they are small; they're not for "playing" in. The afternoon cider, tea, coffee and breads are nice. Breakfast is good and well done.

Room Tip: Rooms upstairs that face the street can be noisier if there's street traffic. Rooms have wall h...

We are glad to hear you appreciated the history of our hotel and building. Yes the rooms on the second floor are part of the original foundation and are quaint. However if size is a concern we do have larger rooms available through out the property. We are glad the overall experience you enjoyed and look forward to seeing you in the future.

Absolutely perfect!

My husband and I stayed here while we eloped for our wedding. Before we even booked a room, the staff showed us the available rooms so we could be sure to choose the right one. They were also able to offer a generous mid-week discount which really helped us considerably--in fact, it allowed us to stay an extra night for our honeymoon when we returned two weeks later.

We really could not say enough about our experience. We stayed in the detached patio cottage #19, which afforded us a beautiful room with private bath and fireplace in an extremely private/quiet setting. The little cozy cottage is situated out behind the hotel patios and features its own veranda with seating. We felt like we had absolute privacy but the luxury and convenience of the fully staffed hotel at the same time.

As other reviewers have noted, the breakfasts here are incredible. Having stayed four nights, we were able to sample much of what the hotel has to offer, and we never had a bad meal. In fact, the eggs Florentine were so delicious that my husband asked for the recipe, which they generously let us have. We were also able to have a special order for our main course. I heard another patron asking for alternative milk, which the hotel had not advertised anywhere but was able to provide with no problem: soy, rice, and another type. If you stay here, be sure to make your wishes known. The staff will do everything possible to accommodate you!

Unlike other hotels that charge an enormous fee for anything out of the ordinary, the staff here allowed us to have a beautiful private ceremony right out on the back deck under the enormous oak tree--a really special place. They even provided a witness for us who took pictures and really seemed excited to be there. All of this, as well as the storage of our wedding cake from the Julian Candied Apple Pastry Company, was provided at no extra charge whatsoever. They were also able to provide excellent suggestions for driving tours and activities and dinner recommendations.

Others have already mentioned the special tea service--while we were there we saw many guests getting to know one another, although we kept to ourselves and felt completely comfortable. There are many private spots on the property if you prefer to make use of the games, puzzles, free wi-fi, or copious reading materials provided for you.

Btw, the locked door mentioned by another reviewer did not bother us--you are given a key upon arrival and the hotel seems much more secure and private that way!

We are already planning a trip back to our patio cottage every year for our anniversary. For romance and connection, it can't be beat.

Room Tip: patio cottage is wonderfully private!

My husband and I celebrated our 20th wedding anniversary here. I really liked being able to preview the rooms before choosing one. We arrived shortly after noon and were allowed to check in. We chose #3 for the view of Main St and corner. We seemed to be the only guests to attend the afternoon tea, so we spoke with an employee and got a lot of information about the town. Breakfast of french toast was delicious! I have a few suggestions though, I wish they provided coffee at anytime, both decaf and regular. They didn't have decaf for me in the evening, and I like having coffee very early in the am. My next suggestion is bigger tables in the parlor. One of my favorite activities at bed and breakfasts are meeting other guests during breakfast, but with small separate tables, that made it hard to interact with others. Finally, there was an unpleasant urine smell coming from our room. It would strike us when we first entered the room, and then would dissipate. Perhaps it had something to do with the ghosts who are rumored to haunt the hotel. Other guests did complain of a strange "energy" in their room, but we didn't feel a thing.

Room Tip: I read that rooms 10 and 12 are haunted, so if you want that, I guess you should pick those rooms.

We are glad to hear you enjoyed the stay and liked having the opportunity to select your room upstairs. We find that is a fun experience for the guests. Usually we have a sign placed next to the other coffee offering decaf if requested. The staff will be more than happy to make you a fresh pot anytime, please don't hesitate to ask next time you are with us. Yes the parlour room is set with tables for up to four people per table and they can be expanded to sit more if required. We try to offer a comfort level for all guests. Some guests enjoy interacting and meeting new people and for those they can share tables if they like. For those guests that are looking to enjoy the time away with their friends, spouses or loved ones we allow them the opportunity to sit at their own private table. Also we are very sorry to hear you had an unpleasant smell. We have sent staff and maintenance to attack any problem that may be there however have not been able to recreate the smell nor have had others bring it to our attention.

The Julian Gold Rush Hotel is the oldest continuously operated hotel in Southern California and is very well maintained while retaining it's historical ambiance. The hot breakfast is great and served in a room with the portraits of the original owners from the late 1800s, Albert and Margaret Robinson, and Abraham Lincoln. Tea is served in the same room every afternoon and you can use the room throughout the day. The rooms are very charming and cozy and historically small which adds to the connection with the past. No phones and TVs make the experience complete.

The hotel is family owned and operated by father and daughters. All of the staff is very friendly and eager to make your stay enjoyable. Julian is also a historic town with fun shops and an interesting museum. Julian is surrounded by beautiful country, apple orchards and wineries.

I have been staying at the Julian Hotel for over 30 years and enjoy every visit.
