...that guests care about is what makes OHCI great. Need good lighting for reading? Check. Fluffy, big towels? Check. Cozy, warm robe? Check. A better bed with nicer linens than you have at home? Check.

In addition, the buildings are thoughtfully, beautifully designed in a manner that makes full use of the natural site. Over the years 11 years since we first visited, the landscaping has grown in, and more chairs and hammocks have been placed in a way that invites a lounger or an impromptu picnic. The staff is welcoming and friendly. The appetizer wine is local (but not that great); the dining room food is wonderful -- creative, flavorful and a treat for the eyes as well as the palate.

A stay is expensive enough that we think several times before we make the reservation. But once we are there - especially for the well-earned post-Christmas madness decompression we just enjoyed - we wonder why we hesitated.

We stayed in the lodge for two nights and found it to be a wonderful place with a wam and friendly staff and excellent food. The breakfast and dinner offerings were spot on.
We selected room 6 because it has a deck. However, the weather was typical for November and too cool to enjoy. The grounds offer bucolic seating in random places and hammocks. What could be better? We have to come back when it is a bit warmer.
The fire in the fireplace, the wine and snacks in the early evening really hit the spot.
I slept in both nights, something I am frequently unable to do at home. The bed was very comfortable and the room was quiet.
We will return.

Room Tip: Room 6 offers a patio but room 5 is a bit larger. Check out the web site for things you like. Stay...

We stayed here for two nights in mid October. The weather was perfect - 75 degrees and sunny, with cool mornings and evenings. The trees started turning Fall colors, and should be perfect by now, the beginning of Nov.

I wouldn't stay here on a Monday night again, because the only restaurant we like in town - the Julian Grille, is not open. There are very few dining choices on Monday nights. On Tuesday night, we ate at the Orchard Hill Inn (part of our special package) and the food was excellent. We paid $10 extra per person to upgrade to filet mignon, which was well worth it. Breakfast the first morning was really delicious - an egg dish. The second day's breakfast was just so-so: dry pancakes and tough bacon. A stay here always includes breakfast and hors devours with wine or apple cider in the evening. Breakfast is delivered with assorted fruits - really good. The freshly baked scones are crispy on the outside, and moist inside - among the best I've every tasted. You can have Julian apple cider with breakfast. It is very good.

We like staying in the inn, not cottages, because of easier access to the beautiful lodge lounge room, breakfast and dining room (open every other night). The views from the dining room are beautiful trees from the many large windows. We stayed in Room 1 again, on the first floor since my husband can't walk upstairs due to his arthritis. (If you have the same problem with stairs, see all of my reviews for where to stay). This room is the only one on the first floor with a king size bed. The shower had extremely low flow, as usual. Therefore I plan ahead and wash my hair before we leave.

It was cold in the morning and evening, but the large fireplace in the lobby was never lit. I asked to see a few cottage rooms, but could only see one because the others were not cleaned. I don't think they clean a room until they know someone is staying in it that night. Therefore if you want to see other rooms, in anticipation of your next stay here, it is usually not possible. I think that is poor marketing. The television was the smallest flat-screen I've ever seen, and the sound is not loud enough. They are limited with what will fit in the a moire, but I think a size larger screen would have worked. Our room special also included a box lunch. It included a slice of nice cheese, two rolls, a couple of dry cookies, a summer sausage, and a cold couscous salad. We didn't really enjoy these items.

The entire staff here is excellent - friendly and always helpful.

Room Tip: If you want to stay in the main lodge but can't walk up stairs, then the best first floor room i...

Just finished spending the weekend (during the apple harvest) at the OHCI and wish we were still there! As repeat guests we value everything about this beautiful inn. The staff. The owners. The food. The rooms. The appointments. The grounds. 5-star in every way. We are treated like family every time we go... and we intend to keep on going back as often as we can.

We first met Pat and Darrell several years ago when my wife was in a wheelchair and on oxygen 24/7. They, and the staff, went completely above and beyond to ensure that our stay - which we thought at the time would be one of our last weekends together in this life - was absolutely wonderful. One heart-lung transplant and a few years later and we're still going back... now without the oxygen and wheelchair! Every time we do, we are greeted with hugs and tears and that same excellence that we enjoyed during our first stay. The owners and the staff are the real deal.

The OHCI caters to a specific type of clientele. Several reviews herein mention the lack of twenty-something guests. However, we've seen plenty of young couples during our stays there. In my opinion, if you are looking for a quiet, relaxing, and pampered experience... then you are definitely smack dab in the middle of their sweet spot regardless of your age. If you're a power drinker looking to party hearty, long, and loud... you're probably not going to enjoy yourself at the OHCI. Pat and Darrell have worked hard to make the OHCI experience what it is and you can see their pride in everything they do as well as in the way that the staff faithfully reflects those same values.

We can't wait to go back!

We wanted some place close by for our anniversary and chose the Orchard Hill Country Inn, in Julian, which is just an hour away. The grounds of the Inn are lovely and provided a nice quite area to walk and/or sit. Although our room was quite small, it was very clean and well maintained. Chocolates by the bed were great! We enjoyed the wine and hors d'oeuvres and talking with the other guests in the afternoon. We had reservations at the Inn for dinner and it was very good. I was a little disappointed that we were seated at a small table next to the entrance wall when other tables were available and remained that way throughout our dinner. The owner said those were reserved for returning guests. Since this was our first visit, we could not be seated there. Breakfast on the veranda in the morning was wonderful with many choices. The owner was a very attractive, fun person and we enjoyed her friendly banter. We look forward to returning so that we can be seated next to a window for dinner.

We've periodically visited Julian for the last 25 years and usually stay at the Orchard Hill Inn for three nights. We've stayed at the inn during winter, summer and spring and all worked although we did have snow one winter. The cottages are excellent and spacious. I think some room redecorating has been done. The owners are around to greet, chat and help. The inn recognizes previous customers and those celebrating special occasions. Food is excellent. We plan to return for a 6th? visit.
