'm a normal person, a regular everyday average normal guy. i've traveled all over, stayed in hostels and penthouses using trip advisor often, but this is my first review.
My girlfriend just walked in and asked what i was doing, i said i was writing a review for Cheers Cambodia and she gave me a snarky grin and said "oh no, maybe he'll come for us."
my girlfriend and i stayed at Cheers for two nights. the rooms are nice, clean, and well worth the money. the pool is nice upon appearance, and the staff is friendly.
Cheers has the potential to be the number one rated hotel in it's part of Cambodia (i cant spell the name of the city & its too much effort to google it). most negative reviews on here are regarding the owner and his cadence, it's correct on some levels. there are people that are nice, accommodating and welcoming... then there are creepy people. Les is one of those people, all in all, he is trying too hard and somewhat invasive. the rest of the staff is nice, but over friendly; we felt like they didn't want us to leave the resort. in my girlfriends words, "it feels like we're on 'the shining'". when we first arrived we thought a drink would be nice after all the bus traveling, so he directed us to the bar. we walked around to the bar and it was quiet. no music, no barman, no life. that's fine, fair enough, whatever... your closed, i get it. but no, he come in behind the bar and gives us menus. we awkwardly order a drink and ask about some info on the city and islands, he told us what we wanted to know, and assured us its always busy in the bar, urging us to order food. we decline and ask where to go for a nice drink and food. it was about 20:00 and he told us everything was closed or closing, but after some persistence he directed us to a cheap bbq place and arranged a techno tuk-tuk to come pick us up, requesting we leave the room key with him so he knew when we got back. the bbq place was a bit dodgy so we walked up the street for a doner kebab and it was decent. we got back and need a shower, the shower was amazing, LED light show from the showerhead. it was the highlight of my stay.
in the morning we had breakfast from the chef of 30 years, the bacon was great but the eggs we very very runny. after breakfast, the misses wanted to lay by the pool so we headed out there. it was nice, clean looking. i jumped in for a swim and had a vodka, all was good. then Les came out, and turned the pool filter on explaining how he has a chemical free pool with an ion filter. i was impressed until i realized he only uses the filter when he has a guest who wants to swim. the pool filled up with sentiment and brown stuff was floating around everywhere. i got out, whatever, he's cheap, that' fine... i can lay on the sunbed no worries. then i asked about the rock wall by the pool, he said it was a waterfall, "let me turn it on for you"... he turned it on for 15 minutes and it was nice, then he shut it off. eventually we left again to explore, and he requested the key again, claiming that it cost $37 to replace if lost, "so you should just leave it." to me that's a bit creepy and somewhat insulting. i'm not a child, and you're not my father. i'll go out when i want and come back when i want, so i declined and we left in a non-techno tuk-tuk. we stayed out all day, had a great time, found out that the town does not die down at 20:00, it actually has lots to offer around the 2 lions statue. all in all, we we're a bit creeped out. if the owner could just be a bit less invasive, and a bit less cheap, he would have 100% positive reviews. for me, it's the little things that count, and there were too many annoying little things for us to want to stay again.
