“Great place to stay”
Reviewed 16 May 2014

I was most impressed by the standard and cleanliness of the rooms, and the friendly service at the Reef Resort. It is rare that the photos of hotel or booking website actually match the reality of seeing a place first hand. They have a great bar-restaurant and are in a good location close to the beach. Loved it and would stay again.

Stopped by The Reef Resort in Sihanoukville for their Cinco de Mayo festivities last week. I’ve lived in SHV for 6 years and never sampled it food fare until then. In honor of the Mexican holiday the Reef had Nachos, Mexican beers and tequila specials.
In Cambodia nachos are difficult to find. Likely for two main reasons: 1. This is South East Asia not Central or South America, (duh); halfway around the world; wrong context for that dish except for a few nostalgic Texans and smattering of southern good ole boys that still dig it. 2. The ingredients aren’t that prevalent and when they can be found, they cost an arm and a leg; i.e. one lousy bag of tortilla chips runs $8. Nearly equal the going rate per kilo as gold. Within a bottom-line business context nachos’ fixings tend to make them cost prohibitive.
The Reef has a rather expansive dining area situated in front of the hotel and swimming pool. The Cinco de Mayo special kicked in a 12 noon, I entered the joint at 12:01 to sample the nachos. Wasn’t expecting much, normally I’ve found “specials” are anything but special. Usually the serving size and fixings shrink to fit the lower price.
Not so at Reef. The bowl of nachos contained a veritable mountain of tortilla chips, smothered in chili beans, ground beef, black olives, jalapeño pepper slices galore, melted cheddar cheese, a sizeable dollop of sour cream and ladle-full of piquante sauce. The serving had the works. Of particular note: the tortilla chips were toasty warm and crispy fresh.
And for this spicy food aficionado the pièce de résistance was found in the condiment basket: four different flavors of hot sauce. Three kinds of Tabasco sauce and that rarity of rarities in Cambodia, Tapatio Hot Sauce. With those four little devils assistance Reef Resort’s nachos raised the quality bar. In blue collar vernacular: they kicked butt.

Great location on a busy city-center street. Bars and restaurants all over the hotel vicinity. Good value for money, room was basic but clean and comfortable. Safe, friendly staff and a good place to chill out at the pool table with beer. We saw many places nearby offering boat services to the nearby islands too but we had ours arranged beforehand.

Firstly, this is the 2nd time we've stayed at the reef resort. The first time was about 1.5 years ago, and we really enjoyed our stay then. This time though, the whole experience was a bit ... bleh ~~

- The lock on our room was wobbly, and the privacy bolt on the inside was broken.
- The aircon, while "working" technically, couldn't be switched off or adjusted. The remote for the aircon didn't work either.
- The ceiling fan was VERY noisy.
- Insufficient water pressure in the showers.
- The attached restaurant served sub-standard food for highish prices in view of the quality of the food served (refer to my separate review for the Reef Resort Restaurant).
- We wanted to go for a swim in the evenings, but the floating debris (leaves, twigs, dead insects) quickly made us change our mind.
- Beds were uncomfortable, both of us woke each morning aching all over: the mattress was too thin and too hard, the sheet too small, and the blanket so thin it may as well just be for decoration ... plus the tassels on the "blanket" were so ticklish, they aggravated my hayfever every time I moved.
- The room REALLY needs an additional rubbish bin: it's the little touches more than anything that make or break a hotel ...

On Agoda, this is advertised as a 2-minute walk to the beach -- It's NOT.

This stay, everything seemed to be a lot more broken down compared to our previous stay; doubt we'll be back again. Plenty of newer and better maintained places in sihanoukville these days, within a similar distance to the beach.

As other reviews have mentioned it's a bit on the pricey side, but it's clean, quiet, centrally located and has well functioning AC and a pool. It's the best option I've found so far in the Serendipity Beach area.

We stayed here as we moved from our last place that started to smell for some reason. They initially did not have any rooms but managed to sort us out. The rooms are little on the more expensive side compared to other places near by, but the rooms are very clean and cleaned every day. Safe in the room. Pool was nice and clean and the restaurant does some very nice burgers :-)
