“Beware”
Reviewed 18 May 2010

Beware this hotel is not what it seems from the brochures. And where it gets its good reviews from baffles me, maybe its the owners writing their own reports. It is very expensive for what it offers, the room does not have a bath tub as advertised by them, it has a wet room, which was fine. But the room offered no soap or toilet paper. In fact it is not allowed to put toilet paper down the loo, it has to go into a bin. During our 6 day spell here, the place was never cleaned, the same bedclothes for the whole time, and towels changes as and when they felt fit to. It offers payment by Visa, but when it comes to pay, their machine does not work, so you have to go to the local ATM to get cash. The staff tho' were friendly. And as an aside, the local Ochheuteal Beach is absolutely filthy, and overrun by flies.

We stayed for three nights. We got a room upon arrival so it was cheaper than booking online.

The room itself was a good size even though there was a musty smell. Air conditioning was ok but needed to be left on for a long time to get the real benefit. The bathroom was a good size but was a wetroom.

There was free WIFI and the hotel was in a great location. It's about a two minute walk from the beach and right beside many good restaurants and bars.

The staff were frustrating at times. Rather than just indicating they did not understand when you made a request, they just nodded and agreed! There was one girl however who was very helpful.

Overall it wasn't a bad place to stay.

Extremely shocked and disappointed at the state of this place. The room was dinghy and dirty, the beds were uncomfortable and the aircon was noisy (but at least it worked). The hose for the bathroom shower wasn't even long enough to reach its hook, so evidently I was expected to have a shower sitting down holding it.

When I consider how much the owner expects you to pay versus what he provides, the well known Australian phrase "tell him he's dreaming" comes to mind. I really don't know what he is doing all day with his money, when some inexpensive and tasteful updates and repairs would be all that is needed.

For better value for money, stay at Le Jardin aux Hibiscus instead.

We stayed for one night and having read other reviews of the hotel I would urge others to read prior to booking. The room itself was fine. Not perfectly clean; there were some hefty dusty cobwebs for example but the bed linen and bathroom appeared very clean and that is what matters. There was no TV but we had been pre-warned of this and we were also well warned that an extra 10% for VAT would be added to our bill.
The room was also pretty quiet considering how close it is to the thick of the nightlife action on serendipity beach road.
The complaint I would have would be regarding managements attitude. I think for someone reading this I would urge them to read the managers responses to previous reviews. Not everyone is cut out to be succesfull in hospitality and making guests feel like they are a nuisance isn't really good business. The Khmer staff were lovely, maybe the manager should hand over more responsibility to them

The Deva Raja has been consistently criticised by Trip Advisor reviewers, and mostly with good cause. I can’t speak for the condition of all the rooms as I only saw two, and, though basic, these were okay by the rather low S’ville standards. Also, the location is not at all bad – near enough to easily access the popular beach area, but far enough away to give a sense of calm. But the other complaints – little comparable value for money, disinterested service, insufficient attention to room cleanliness, the seemingly deliberate ploy to disguise the “tax” – are all valid. On top of these, the establishment chose to reduce their room rates during my stay – after I had indicated the intention to remain for a few days – though lacked the courtesy to offer the reduction for my remaining stay, or even to provide an explanation. One other unique feature of the Deva Raja is the “management responses” to reviewer criticism - that end up attacking the reviewers themselves!

Like several others reviewers, I suggest you keep walking past Deva Raja. You will likely find something you will be happier with in S’ville.

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at the Deva Raja Villa. The rooms were large, clean and comfortable. Everyone on the staff was very friendly and eager to help, especially the owner who gave us good advice on travel plans for the rest of our journey.

The Deva Raja is only a short distrance from one of the biggest beaches in Sihanoukville. Yet it was very quiet at night so we had a good night's sleep. Their restaurant and bar are a great place to relax, in a tropical garden cooled by a fresh sea breeze.

Where to start! We found an advertisement in a Sihanoukville tourist guide for a boutique villa called Deva Raja. Having just stayed in a gorgeous villa in Phnom Pehn for a similar price, we thought that this would be a comparable hotel and decided to stay a few nights at Deva Raja.

How wrong were we!!

There is nothing, NOTHING boutique about this hotel. A few coloured scatter pillows on a bed does NOT make a boutique hotel.

We were checked in to a room opposite the reception desk which may as well have been a bed placed in the reception itself. Every phone call, every conversation was echoed loudly into our room. The owner has a lovely dog named Nigel but nothing was done to cease Nigel's incessant barking in the corridor reception at night time, hence detracting from the 'sanctuary' of what a hotel room is supposed to be.

Then there was the view from our bedroom window! I will post a picture for you to view but a prettier view could be found in downtown Baghdad. For $25US or more a night (which was the price for our horrible experience at Deva Raja), the very least that could be done is either a) move the garbage or c) put some bamboo or banana trees in front of the mess to detract from it. Little cost and little effort would have made all the difference.

Promote your hotel with hot water, we expect hot water. No hot water from our taps for any longer then 30 seconds.

And a plug for the bath? Couldn't be found and to be frank, we were too reluctant to ask for one because the staff were not interested in helping us.

We didn't feel welcome at Deva Raja at all. While we don't expect shared intimacies with our hosts, we do expect a little courtesy and maybe a little advice on services available to us as guests. Every question was met with disinterest and an attitude that we were putting them out.

We checked out after only one night and felt a sense of relief when we walked out the door. It is an overpriced shame and I wonder what experience the hosts have in managing a hotel as it appears to be treated like guests don't matter.

That said, the Khmer staff were lovely, it was the foreign owners who treated us as though we were inconveniencing him.

Thinking of staying at Deva Raja? Our advice is DON'T! You will be better of investing an additional $5 and staying at the wonderful Reef Resort Hotel which is 100 meters from Deva Raja.

Hotel_Owner_DRV, Owner at DevaRaja Villa, responded to this review, 6 July 2009
We at DevaRaja Villa are keenly aware that many of our guests are on holiday in what may be an unfamiliar Developing Country with a terrible past and that they may be affected in unusual ways by the reality of Cambodia. We try our best to create a welcoming, hospitable and friendly atmosphere where they can relax and enjoy the beach in a clean and secure environment. When we fail to meet a customers expectations we redouble our efforts and make any necessary changes to better meet our customer’s needs.

After careful consideration about this posting and identifying the customer and the dates of stay we can only conclude that this is one of those unfortunate instances where everyone involved was having a really bad day. It seems that our customers’ bad day and our bad day coincided. Now we certainly do not believe that our having a bad day should ever get through to the customer and we apologize for anything we or our staff may have done to add to their dissatisfaction.

We just finished construction of our new addition and there was a pile of RUBBLE on the non-public side of the hotel. This rubble has been removed. We always try to act in an environmentally sound fashion in these matters so finding a suitable and safe place to have this rubble removed to has been a challenge. We hope our guests understand that we do not want to add to Cambodia’s problems and it sometimes takes longer here to do something the right way.

While we understand and sympathize with this customer we ask those looking for a hotel here in Sihanoukville to consider this: This customer stayed for one night at a substantial discount paying $25 for a $34 room. Please consider also the length and tone of the posting given the length of stay. We note that a careful reading will expose several important inconsistencies especially in comments about the staff. While we have no certain knowledge of such, we feel strongly that there has been some, encouragement or planning in this posting from an employee of a well known and named competitor. We feel sure the Owner and Manager of that competitor would not condone these actions if they knew. In light of this we have asked the Trip Advisor Staff to take this post down.

Finally, future customers of DevaRaja Villa can be assured of our utmost efforts to make your stay with us friendly, enjoyable, secure and comfortable.
