Independence Hotel, Resort and Spa is a class act anyway you look at it. Besides its historically significant architectural design, plush rooms, elegant cuisine and a number of great amenities like pool, modern gym, spectacular beach and topnotch spa, the hotel’s tropical rainforest grounds are the home of 70 Macaque monkeys. The hotel's monkey sanctuary is a popular local attraction.
The resort has something like four kilometers of jungle that surround its very well manicured, artistically designed gardens that circle the hotel proper. Across the street from the resort’s property is the Sihanoukville reservoir making that area a perfect habitat for the monkeys..
There are two types of Macaque monkeys that cohabitate the area: the grey, long-tailed monkeys number 50 (kinda skittish) and the brown, stub-tailed variety that behave in a people-friendly manner, that number around 20.
Everyday roughly at 2PM they come out of their jungle environs to sit on the cyclone fence by the roadside to bask in the sun and get fed by Cambodians and foreigners alike. At any one time there are something like 15 people feeding the simians from 2 to 5PM when the Macaques migrate to their sleeping area in the lush jungle near the top of the hill.
Four days a week Sopheap – known affectionately as Momma Monkey – comes to feed her monkey friends 3 kilos of cucumbers, the monkeys’ favorite food. She is the Jane Goodall layperson’s equivalent for the Macaques on Independence Hill.
When Sopheap pulls up on her motorcycle and she lets out her “monkey call” a horde of monkeys stop eating the bananas and peanuts the other visitors are feeding them and run to her. She has developed a great rapport with them. So much so, that even the female monkeys allow her to feed their babies. Very rare cause they are normally very protective of their young and won’t let a human near their babies.
When in Sihanoukville it’s well worth the 5 kilometer trip to Independence Hill to view the monkeys in their natural habitat. And a night or two at the resort is a nifty way to celebrate special occasions, too.

We spent one night here on our honeymoon. A really special hotel, big but full of 60s glamour. Expensive but your money gets you a great room and 5* service. Our room was huge, with an amazing wet room, bath inside and outside! The beach was also lovely, clean, quiet and easy to swim, very different from the main beaches in sihanoukville. Also a knock out breakfast buffet and a good dinner of fish amok too. Not close to town, but a place to linger.

I have been using this hotel for some time and over the last year it has declined in its cleanliness the rooms are in much need of a re-refurbishment this is due I am sure to poor cheep construction and finishes away from the main building...On a positive note the restaurant served well prepared food and breakfast catered for everyone.
I also found that its hard to get a mobile signal even in the business center...

Room Tip: The rooms are tired and they need to train their cleaning staff.... so for me until I see an improvement I will not be going back...Positive is a good safe beach.

We loved this retreat on the beach.
Floor to ceiling windows in the hotel rooms overlook the beach.
Rooms are spacious and modern.
The resort facilities are great. Our teenagers loved the pool, snooker, games room, tennis court and of course walking along a private beach.
The sunset restaurant is a perfect location to watch the sunset over drinks.
Staff are very friendly and the breakfasts are great.
The walks in the gardens around the property are very interesting and it is a nice touch to have information about some of the local plants.

Room Tip: All rooms in the main building have floor to ceiilng windows overlooking the beach.
