Mary Hong, the hotel's hostess, greeted us at the entryway to the hotel with a couple of glasses of fruit juice and cool face towels, and our stay at the Independence Hotel in Sihanoukville, Cambodia just got better from there. We had our choice of restaurants at the hotel--one at the top, with spectacular views, and one right by the water, where we could watch the crabs picking up invisibible little tidbits off the moss on the rocks 10 feet below us. The barbecue seafood plate for two accomplished the impossible: we actually had more lobster, shrimp, crab, and fresh whole fish than we could possibly eat. The hotel's private beach was the highlight: no vendors bothered us as we watched the sunset each evening from our comfy lounge chairs.

This revival old glory founded in 1963 and renovated in 2007 offers a great location over the sea and has a small, but nice private beach. That’s it. It’s a 4 star hotel (local rating) but far away from international standard. The management is extremely poor, the young staff tries to do his best, but without competent managers they are inefficient. Some examples: receptionist brought me in the wrong building on my arrival, the room was not clean at all (long hairs on the floor, stains, dead bugs behind armchairs, dirty mirrors, holes in the bathroom towels, etc), lack in the maintenance, every night an engine located in the basement of the building made a strong noise (I complained several times, but no change during my stay), when I asked the same question to 3 different employees I had 3 different answers about the opening hours of breakfast room. The beach is small, the beach beds are dirty, and in the afternoon it’s very difficult to obtain clean towels on busy days… The pedestrian maritime trail along the hotel property could be pleasant and romantic, but they are some many rubbish (including dirty plates, glasses and empty bottles)… during my 4 days stay no one from the hotel came to clean it. Food is acceptable but more expensive that outside restaurants. The breakfast buffet is good (for Cambodia) and the bedroom was large with sea view balcony. Internet access is not free… and very expensive! It’s a shame that I had to face so many problems, because, once again location is pleasant. The owner should hire competent managers.

We spent our Christmas at the Independence (family of 6 adults); the hotel is located about 15 minutes by tuk tuk from 'downtown' Sihanoukville. We stayed in the New Hotel buidlings.
The hotel staff are wonderful. Construction of the new hotel units is a bit wobbly, showers leak (ie shower curtain does not keep the water in so floor gets wet and slippery), handles fall off (staff came immediatly to repair), cupboard doors stick, etc. However the rooms are clean and spacious, beds are a little hard but reasonably comfortable, showers are strong and the bath is big enough for a soak! All our rooms had balconies overlooking the grounds and the beach. Breakfast was fabulous, excellent selection and plenty of it, the pool is great, we do not have young children but it struck us a family friendly hotel. The beach is the best! - we checked out alternatives in town but were dismayed by the crowds and hawkers and immediately returned to the hotel. One precaution - the first section of beach is very rocky, three of our group sliced their feet badly on the first day; make sure you swim in the section past the beach-bar. Internet in the rooms is a bit pricey but good connections were available at the business center. We ate our evening meals in town but food served at breakfast and lunch was good, no doubt dinner would be the same. All in all we had a terrific time there and will definitely go back.

We booked our brief Christmas holiday in Sihanoukville at the last minute & were really not expecting much, having endured several forgettable tours of the country & Christmases in Siem Reap, Phnom Penh & elsewhere. It was with great relief that we rolled into The Independence Hotel, which, despite many decades of operation, remains in good shape & quite functional. The premises are clean ans well kept for Khmer standards, and the rooms are all that you need. It is not exaggerating to say that this hotel would be at home in coastal Thailand or even perhaps along the Mediterranean coast. Staff were less sleepy than is usual in non-elite Khmer facilities, and the view and beach are painfully beautiful, immaculately clean and a pleasure to lounge around. Unfortunately the restaurant is beyond awful, and we suffered through what was one of the most revolting Christmas dinners at the upper deck facility, which served disgusting & over priced meals to a 70's soundtrack that was on loop...we sat through no less than 8 runs of 'Lonesome Loser' which really summed up our dining experience, as it was just us & one other unfortunate couple. So, by all means stay at the hotel with confidence but other than the buffet breakfast which is tolerable, PLEASE make the effort to enjoy some of the wonderful restaurants in town.

A really beautiful place, the wild forest area has been maintained and there are quaint pathways through them to the beach, main hotel pool area etc. Perfect if you want to chill and enjoy the silence of the place with just the sound of the waves...... they have built a wonderful pathway along the shore to the beach area..... great food, great price for a place like this. Friendly staff, very helpful.

The main building of the hotel is an uber cool 60's minimalist building which is unfortunately being compromised by the current owners. There is a large new development being built on the site which is not in keeping at all with the original building. There are developments to the main building which are not sympathetic either.

You'll need to upgrade to a deluxe room if you want the amazing sea views as the trees block everything lower down. The rooms are plush but not large, the air conditioning is not great and hot water availability in the morning isn't great either.

There's a wide spread for breakfast from sushi to omlettes and service is excellent. The same cannot be said for the coffee!

There is a huge amount of building going on all over the site. It would have been less disturbing if they had completed some aspects of the project before starting others.

The private beach is a case in point, a narrow strip of sand between a building site and the sea. It is also soulless, we spent all our time in town.

For the prices it charges this hotel is poor value for money. They'd be better off spending their money on ensuring the original building was up to scratch and little items like the towels and coffee were right.

Had a lovely stay at the Independence hotel. Had to book 2 rooms to accommodate family which was a bit pricey. Baby cot was provided with no mattress so ended up turning coach around in room and making makeshift cot. Pool was green and in desperate need of cleaning upon arrival so we asked when it was last done and the next morning it was cleaned. We ordered room service one night it rained as we didnt want to venture out with the kids and it arrived to us cold. There excuse was because it was raining. Construction is occurring throughout the hotel with power tools and hammering continuing into the night (9:30pm) , repeated phone calls were required to have this stopped.
Putting all that aside it was a great place to stay with children, very safe and it was the beach that won us over. This hotel will be a lovely place to stay say in 5 years time once all construction is finished, provided they take care of the pool more regularly and up there service a bit more.
