Take the chance to imagine ourselves as characters in those Chinese period dramas by staying here for a night. This hotel was rebuilt to look like a 300 yr old ancient Chinese mansion. Facilities are clean and modern, with heated showers, free wifi, heated flooring, etc. The experience was indeed very unique. We were there during the winter, so generally it was very quiet with few tourists. Not much to do at night in winter. The only entertainment was the nightly traditional Chinese performances at the restaurant next door, where we had dinner. The performance was good though. Take note that there are no lifts to rooms on the 2nd floor, so be prepared to lug your bags up the narrow stairs.
Service wise, there's definitely room for improvement.
We were there on a very cold night (below -15C). The air in the room was freezing. We saw the air-conditioner in the room but no remote control for it. When we called the reception to ask, we were told that only the floor is heated, and not the bed. Remote control not given as it's winter and therefore we should have no need for it. We felt so dumb asking for the air-con control. We ended up just cuddling in bed as it was really cold otherwise. Thankfully the bed and blankets provided were very comfy and warm.
Next morning we found out from the tour guide that we should have turned on the air-con to regulate the temperature in the room. Now we felt even dumber :(
But overall, it was a very interesting experience worth trying.
