When we approached the hotel, my first thought was "oh no" as it faced a busy tourist street but once inside it was quiet and peaceful. All the rooms are in separate courtyards set in the back of the hotel. Yes, the beds are Chinese style meaning hard but the pads made it comfortable and there were more pads in the closet if needed. However, both my sister and I slept very well. The staff speak little English but a few words and pointing got us through. The restaurant is located across the street and we did not eat there.

Pingyao is an experience in itself and it's best to wander the side streets to get away from the crowded tourist cross streets. Approximately 30,000 people live within the ancient city walls. It's a wonder that Pingyao has escaped central planning and modernization.

I just stayed here and was NOT impressed at all, I certainly would recommend NOT staying here. The beds were not just hard, might as well have been on a floor board. The staff were very relectant to give us extra duvets, though we finally got them. Overall the staff were all very non-engaged and not helpful at all. There was no complementary drinking water in the rooms, if you didn´t have your own, you could buy a bit bottle for 45 RMB and you even had to pay for tea!! The breakfast was extremely non-descript. They ran out of fresh fruit 20 minutes after the buffet opened, and didn´t refill. The coffee was Nescafe - I could go on and on. Find another place to stay

It is now known as the International Financier Club and is right in the middle of the walled city - an ideal location to see all the sights. We had a lovely Chinese style room and whilst the beds are a little hard, they are not uncomfortable at all and rather delightful. All mod cons on hand and really quiet courtyards. They have two courtyard hotels opposite each other with a lobby/bar/restaurant in one and breakfast in the other. A relaxing stay and so far from the ghastly anonymous hotels in some cities.....

This hotel is located within the ancient wall city of Ping Yao. There is no vehicular access within the walled city except for 12 seater golf cart equivalent. They zoom around the narrow streets and provide an efficient mode of transport. We were therefore advised to only bring overnight bags that we can physically carry.
The staff have difficulty understanding anything other than Putonghua (Mandarin).
The Rooms
Are average sized and we'll heated with a platform bed, thin 2 inch mattress (hard by Western standards), duvet, desk and stool, 2 wooden arm chairs and a side table. There is no cupboard or safe, only a coat stand. Two large bottles of water are available at a charge. There is a traditional Chinese teapot (but electrically powered) to boil water and some Chinese tea. Bedroom slippers are supplied.
The bathroom is small, but functional with a heated towel rail. There is a shower with a good flow of hot water from the overhead rose. An essential luxury considering the cold weather. The wash hand basin is a ceramic bowl. There are supplies of toothbrush, toothpaste, razor, shower cap, shampoo, bath gel, soap and comb.
WiFi - none
Dinner - local cuisine.
An interesting selection of food. May not suite the Western palate.
Breakfast - traditional Chinese
Not really catered for the Western palate. Other than toast and a very small bowl of cereal, rice pops and cake, the breakfast selections are all traditional Chinese cuisine. There are vegetables, porridge, noodles, cold beats, buns etc. Only Chinese tea, juice and milk is supplied. No coffee.
Comment:
Worth spending a night to experience traditional Chinese Inn. Don't expect Western style 4 star hotel and you will not be disappointed.
If you need internet, I suggest you purchase a China Mobile HK SIM card. I bought mine in Hong Kong for HK$88/- and enabled data roaming. In China only 2G is available widely, good enough for email and light surfing. Data cost is calculated at HK$3.80/MB and capped at HK$48/- a day

Nearly 300 years old it is situated in the heart of the walled city of Pingyao and is a wonderful example of a chinese building. Our room 102 is entered from a secluded courtyard and is equipped with the traditional platform bed. Although old it has many modern features, air-con, wifi, central heating and en-suite bathroom. We had our doubts about a good sleep with the thin mattress but everything was very comfortable once you snuggled in. The staff were helpful and those in the bar and reception spoke good english. A well appointed and positioned hotel we can recommend.

Pingyao in general is an experience. This is a city that uses coal to for heat and contains many ancient structures within the city walls. It is amazing how dirty our shoes got from coal dust. Part of the experience was staying in the kong style bed and staying in a room with Ming style decor. As mentioned before the bed is quite hard but it was padded and we slept fine. The bed is gigantic and the room had a heater that kept us warm as the nights were quite cool. The beds are no longer warmed as I am sure using a coal fire in a bedroom might not be the safest thing for fire concerns. The shower had a wood floor suspended over the drain but we were supplied with three pairs of plastic water shoes to wear that worked fine. As mentioned before, these hotels would not receive 5 star ratings in the US but everything was clean and it is amazing to think one is staying in buildings that are many many years old.

Food was a bit of an issue in Pingyao. First night we ate in a very Chinese place on the street and it was the only time we felt a bit ill in China. Next day we ate in restaurant that advertised itself as having western food, the Sakura Cafe, and it was recommended by Lonely Planet. This food was really good. We ordered too much and left some food and the manager came over to make sure we liked the food and if they needed to make any changes. Our son got a veggie burger that was excellent. The next time we went to another restaurant that said it had western food. He ordered a veggie burger. It came out as microwaved lettuce with a lot (real lot) of mayonaise on a hamburger bun. Wi fi did not work in our room but we could get free wifi in the lobby.

Western breakfast that came with our room was a bit weak - more chinese than western and certainly not one of the best we had in China but enough to eat to get us going in the morning.

Pingyao is certainly worth visiting and one can have a unique experience in this hotel.

Spent a night here in October 2011. It is a restored ancient country inn in the old city with huge rooms around several very tasteful courtyards. The platform bed is about 6 ft long and 12 ft wide, but has a very thin mattress. Right on a main street, so the cafe next door can have loud music until fairly late. Still, we would stay here again if ever in the region. Not sure why it is listed as a hostel, since it is actually a rather fancy, expensive place.

Room Tip: Select a couryard furthest away from main street.
