I went to Karuizawa as a side-trip from Tokyo with my husband as part of our honeymoon. I've done some online research on hotels in Karuizawa and decided to stay at this rather remote hotel.
The hotel is a bit far from the Karuizawa JR station but it runs a shuttle bus service between the JR station and the hotel (with stops at different parts of a larger resort). We took the last bus to the hotel (5pm, rather early) and were greeted by a friendly driver who welcomed us on board with a warm towel (which was exactly what we needed. It was getting cold and dark by that time). We arrived at the hotel around 20 minutes later and were taken to the reception to check in.
The "room" we had was actually a wooden villa the size of an average hotel room with open bath tub. The decor was simple and modern.
The package we booked had dinner and breakfast included. The dinner was fabulous and romantic. We paid to upgrade our menu. Breakfast was semi-buffet type and we especially liked the soba crepe.
Service was good although you can't expect the staff to be proficient in English. They were very willing to help though and we managed to communicate (one or two staff members could speak limited English).
There are lots of maple trees in the hotel area and the view was beautiful at the time we went. There is also a small chapel in the hotel for weddings.
Overall we had a very good experience there and regretted that we only stayed there for one night. The location of the hotel is a bit out of the way but we enjoyed the quiet ambiance.
