5 of us booked a sunset kayak tour of the sea caves at La Jolla. When we arrived, the place was a mob scene of like-minded people waiting for the tour. The sign in process went smoothly with the help of the friendly staff, most of whom are tour guides as well. The actual process of getting out on the water took more time than we expected, due, I think, to the large amount of people signed up. We were put in groups of 10, and eventually got out into the water ( this took an hour).
The tour was great, the guides very knowledgeable on the habitat, etc, and we had a lot of fun.
I would do this again, at a less congested time (what did we expect in August in La Jolla?), and do a morning tour, as it was difficult to see especially inside the cave, at dusk.

Second time we've rented kayaks and visited the LJ caves using SD Bike and Kayak and enjoyed it very much. There are significantly more sea lions (they are not seals) around the caves/cove area than there were just a few years ago and you can kayak right up to them. We saw a very young newborn sea lion on our 90 minute rental trip.

There are at least 5 companies that rent kayaks and operate tours on LJ shores -- I haven't seen much difference (either in price or service) between them. A couple of pieces of advice:

Consider just renting kayaks (vs taking a tour). You get to go at your own pace, pause where you want and aren't grouped with 10 or 15 other folks (You don't need any experience to go by yourselves). On the other hand, the tour does provide good narration of what your seeing.

If you're a snorkeler, take your mask and snorkel for a few minutes out by the caves. Helps if you're on a tandem or have someone to hold your kayak while you snorkel.

You do experience ocean swells on this trip. If you'r prone to sea sickness, take something ahead of time. First time, my son got a little queazy. This time, he took some dramamine and had no problems.

Where a hat and plenty of sunscreen.

Although you can just walk up and rent a kayak, it's easier if you make a prior reservation.

Go early in the morning (particularly on weekends) if you want to avoid the crowds.

You don't have to wear the helmet offered (to be honest, I can't see any reason to wear one). Your choice on the life-vest.

My nine year old son and I opted for the kayak and snorkel tour. The guides gave great instruction and guidance throughout our adventure! We explored a cave and saw sea cliffs. The guides were patient and informative. A shout out to DJ for extra instruction and guidance. The equipment was clean and in good condition.

We only saw one type of fish. Only complaint, we rented an underwater camera for $39. The case become foggy and we couldn't see a thing through view finder.

Overall, worth the cost and fun activity in La Jolla!

Professional staff and very informative. Go early to avoid too many waves at the start and finish. Great way to see the caves and surrounding areas in La Jolla. Careful with your sunglasses-- 1500 lost and counting!

We did the Kayak Tour, highly recommend to pre book and get the snorkel tour with it. We missed out as only went down on the day, which was a Monday. Awesome crew, and a must do!
