“Historic charm in an ideal location”
Reviewed 28 April 2014

If you enjoy sleeping to the sound of the surf in comfortable, spacious rooms you'll want to stay at Scripps Inn. Originally built as the doctors quarters for Scripps hospital, this inn is an easy walk to everything La Jolla has to offer. Classifying it as a Bed and Breakfast is misleading as they don't have the space to offer a true breakfast. But, the pastries are fresh and the Keurig coffee makers in the room are nice. Hospitable staff do a great job maintaining this wonderful spot.

My husband and I stayed in room 15 at Scripp's Inn for our 30th wedding anniversary trip. Our stay wasn't too bad, but it wasn't really good either. Considering that Scripp's Inn is right next to the ocean and has a little kitchen and a couch, we got a pretty good deal for our money. However, the bed was hard. I don't know how a pillowtop mattress can be hard, but it was. The "so called" outdoor patio outside our door was just a bench on a very tiny piece of ground next to the sidewalk. When we went to the bathroom, we could hear the people in the office chatting loudly on the other side of the wall. At night, we heard what sounded like washing machines. But the noise turned out to be a loud clock in the office. The breakfast is served on a little bookshelf in the cramped office - no fruit, just croissants and pastries. The first night we were fortunate because no one was staying in the room above us. By the second night, there were guests staying up there and we could hear them when they got out of bed and walked across the floor. And when they arrived with their luggage, it sounded like a stampede going on above us. So, if you want to save money, and you don't mind staying in a motel that poses as a bed and breakfast, this could be a good choice. Provided that you don't mind the noise. If you want something romantic and cozy and quiet, it might be wise to spend more and stay in a real B&B.

Room Tip: Get a room upstairs that has no rooms above it so you don't hear people walking above you.

The hotel is super clean. Although my room did not have direct ocean view, I could hear the waves. I was just on a business trip, but I would definitely come back with my husband and book one of the ocean view rooms! You can bring your breakfast to your room or eat outside on the veranda. They serve pastries, muffins, orange juice, yoghurt, cereal and coffee. The pastries and muffins are absolutely delicious! Location is great as well.

Room Tip: Get a room on the second floor with ocean view - it's worth it!

We were looking for just the right place in La Jolla for a short seaside getaway and found just what we wanted here. A large, bright, spotless and well-appointed room (#12) with a direct ocean view and a wood - burning fireplace, a bathroom with double sinks, and friendly and knowledgeable management. All at a very reasonable price. We walked along the shore, watched the mother seals with their babies, wandered among the many nearby shops and restaurants, saw a spectacular sunset and then just got to Herringbone (reviewed seperately) in time to order a dozen oysters for $1 each. For breakfast we decided to go downtown again, but the granola, fruit, pastries, yogurt, coffee and juices set out in the lobby were very tempting. We shall return!

It took me a while to write this review only because some things are too good to share. But in keeping with the spirit of Trip Advisor, here goes. This is the ideal spot to stay in La Jolla. Right by the sea, off-street parking, and walking distance to restaurants. The rooms are spacious, wi-fi equipped, and there's a complementary continental breakfast. The front desk was very helpful in rebooking flights, making last minute dinner reservations, and warmly welcoming.

This quaint bed & breakfast sits right on the coastline in La Jolla. Looks like it may have been a small motel at one time, but has been updated with laminate floors, nice fixtures in the bath. Our unit had a king bed (VERY COMFORTABLE - a first priority with me!), and a wood-burning fireplace that we put to use every night. A Keurig coffeemaker was a nice amenity each morning and I appreciated the Aveda products in the bath and bathrobes were hanging in the closet! Wine glasses and wine bottle opener were provided and there was a small refrigerator we put to good use. Large flat screen television also in our room. They provide a starter and wood for you. Continental breakfast each morning in the office area was quite nice - beautiful pastries, granola, juice, milk, coffee and tea. We were called about a week prior to our visit by the hotel because they noticed we were going to be there over Valentine's Day, made several suggestions for restaurants for dinner and offered to make a reservation for us. We didn't take him up on that, but was a very thoughtful gesture that didn't go unnoticed. David in the office was extremely helpful in making reservations for local attractions for us. Very knowledgeable, took care of everything for us. All we had to do was show up and show them our voucher! Our room was #6 on the ground floor, ocean front view. Because of the laminate floors, we were awakened each morning by the people upstairs walking around. Thin walls and floors are to be expected in an older building -- and listening to the waves crashing against the shoreline each night MORE than made up for it! The location of this motel is wonderful, just across the street from a beautiful piece of the La Jolla coastline, close to restaurants, shopping, parks. We even watched a wedding taking place on the coastline right in front of our room! The La Jolla beaches are wonderful, full of marine life and lots of fun. Would definitely go to Scripps again. Thanks for a wonderful vacation!

We loved Scripps Inn because it
* is in a beautiful location (La Jolla is the best!)
* has friendly patrons and staff
* has easy parking
* is a romantic place overall

Do not expect lavish 5 star rooms but they are charming and comfortable. If you stay there, make sure you picnic on the beachfront, watch pelicans and seals on the shore.
